This six-disc set contains recordings chosen by the surviving members of the Smetana Quartet. It includes both string quartets by its namesake, Smetana, along with major works by Janácek, Jaroch, Dvorák, Novák, Mozart, and Beethoven, and--unfortunately--half a quartet by Suk, which should have been included complete. Obviously a set like this will appeal mostly to those already acquainted with the group. (If you're not, try virtually anything of theirs currently available.) After that, knowing that this set includes first issues of a couple of broadcast performances and numerous items that have been unavailable for years, most string quartet devotees will probably be eager to buy this splendid box, a fine representation of one of the great chamber ensembles of the century. --Leslie Gerber
