I used to have this on vinyl. I loved the album. I gave up a lot of vinyl when I moved. I then ordered this on CD and I still love it. Good music, nice compositions and I enjoy hearing rock musicians playing classical guitar music. Nylon strings don't scream, they sing.

I started seeking out Hackett's instrumental work after falling in love with "Horizons" and the opening of "Blood on the Rooftops" by Genesis. His solo rock efforts don't do much for me, but his album Momentum became an instant favorite: it's the perfect thing for Sunday mornings, gray autumn days, or chilly evenings with a glass of wine.
Somehow -- I guess because it virtually disappeared following the advent of MP3s -- I never heard mention of Bay of Kings until recently. And boy am I pleased. Instead of putting Momentum on repeat, I've now got the perfect partner for it.
Sure, it works as aural wallpaper, but to leave it at that is too severely diminishing. It's got more personality than the perhaps-too-smooth Windham Hill samplers and sits very well beside artists like John "Not-the-Star-Wars-Guy" Williams. This is gorgeous work. Highly recommended.

This one is strictly classical guitar. If you like Hackett's harder and more progressive music only, this is not for you. But if you appreciate original compositions for classical guitar played by a master at his instrument, this is it.
Hackett proves once again that he is far from one (or even two) dimensional. There are Many Sides to Hackett and he proves it once again with Bay of Kings.
For a very nice companion CD to make this a 2fer, also get Momentum. I have them both and they are really nice to play as one long set.
Happy listening ...

Steve is one of the most talented guitarists I've ever heard...his simple yet powerful playing speaks like words, and this instrumnetal album stands up to that greatly. Each song is like it's own individual story, and makes it a perfect album to listen to while reading or just relaxing...

It's okay I guess,...just not very enjoyable.

Great.

This album emancipated Hackett from the confines and the politics of major record labels and served as his first true independent release (which was frankly, quite avant-garde, for its time). Whether forced to do so out of necessity or artistic integrity, the end result was Bay of Kings, a beautifully crafted acoustic guitar album with synthesizer accompaniment. At this point, Kings was by far the most risky project any Genesis member (past or present) had ever recorded. Kings is probably among my top five favorite Hackett projects, and really showcases his prowess as a guitarist. This innovative album would be a pre-cursor to wonderful acoustic driven albums like Momentum and There are Many Sides To The Night. I highly recommend this album. Collector's should also note that this record has seen several album covers over the years and in various countries (the most recent of which being the cover on the left).

I have the original 1983 UK LP on Lamborghini Records (a now-defunct indie of no known relation to the Italian luxury motorcar). It has a nude cover painted by Steve's artist wife Kim Poor, but she did a new cover of him for the CD. Of course, I don't have any bonuses on mine! Maybe I'll get this edition. We'll see.
Old tracks like "Kim" and "Horizons" are redone, plus new tracks that are all instrumental and "Unplugged" classical guitar (something Randy Rhoads would be doing if he were still alive), after several prog-rock releases for Charisma. Even now, he's doing an acoustic tour in the EU, and it may feature what you get on this album.

A very acoustic album. Not to my liking compared to other SH albums.

Great music, disturbing production

The music and performance is first rate, which makes it all the more disappointing that this cd, for me, is spoiled by too many effects. Most of the pieces sound like they were recorded in a big cave. Others have what sounds like artificial stereo with individual strings of the guitar being panned left or right. This may have been interesting 'back in the day' but it now sounds dated. Alas, I doubt I'll be playing this one much. If the next remastering could strip away the excessive effects it would be a better album, but as it stands Hackett's 'Tribute' is a far more listenable and better recording.

Pleasant classical guitar instrumentals

An old favourite recaptured. Steve in acoustic mode, pleasant, relaxing guitar instrumentals to wind down with. Delivery took a little longer than expected but the LP was well packaged and clearly addressed.

Superbly recorded and enjoyable music. You get a good booklet with excellent background notes. Highly recommended if you like classical guitar one of Mr Hackett’s turns down a different path.

Just bought this after recently getting into 2 other of Steve's accoustic albums, the terrific 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and 'Metamorpheus'. This, too, is excellent, full of fine pieces and playing from Steve. Next stop, 'Momentum' - and roll on the next new studio album of new material! The 2 brilliant albums 'Out Of The Tunnel's Mouth' then 'Beyond The Shrouded Horizon' coming year-on-year 2010-2011 was incredible.
