Love The Pops and John Williams

I've been a fan of John Williams, and the Boston Pops, for years. I happened upon my old cassette storage holder some months ago and realized that I had missed hearing some of these wonderful pieces of music (because I no longer had a cassette player and because I had pretty much worn out the cassettes...). I started looking on Amazon and was very happy to see that this and other CDs had been created from the original cassettes or albums. I was very happy about that and I am slowly building my CD library with some of my older cassette favorites.

"By Request" and "Aisle Seat" are wonderful to listen to while commuting or, since I'm now retired, for long-distance driving. Being "happy" instrumentals, and not screaming mimis, you can listen to them over and over without becoming nervous or upset, even in bad traffic conditions. They also don't put you to sleep or sound like elevator music. I am by no means a music critic, but I know what I like and these two CDs go where I go if I have to drive very far. Otherwise, they are in my house giving me the same pleasure as I go about my daily activities.

This wonderful CD by John Williams and the Boston Pops presents a portrait of John Williams the composer, with a collection of his most sublime melodies. However, keep in mind that it was released in 1987, so his recent soundtracks such as "Harry Potter", "Schindler's List", or "Jurassic Park" are nowhere to be found on this album. But that is not a problem since it is still a delight for the ears, especially since it presents pieces seldom found on other albums, such as the "Liberty Fanfare", written for the anniversary of the Liberty Bell, or the "Olympic Theme", which is the official theme for the Olympics. On top of that, the listener will appreciate the clarity of the recording, with a bright and clear sound, especially in the brass section (I have a sound bar that I configured in surround mode, so I can hear the brass and drums clearly, even when I am not in the living room).
If you're looking for a more recent compilation, check The Music Of America - John Williams which includes 3 CDs along with other orchestral works written for various occasions.

Nice selection, but recording not great

This CD has a great selection of Williams' classic 1970s / early 80s movie themes -- probably the best one-CD selection I've found and no complaints there. One could assemble exactly what you want from Amazon mp3 downloads I guess, but I prefer the higher quality of original CDs (transcoded to FLAC for PC use).

There are two caveats though. One is that this is not a compilation of original soundtrack records, but newer versions by the Boston Pops conducted by Williams. The orchestration is slightly different. I think the "Jaws" theme actually is better in this version, but some of the others, like "Superman" or "Star Wars" are not. There's a bit too much of a "pops" feel to those -- less dramatic and dynamic, more cymbals and sparkle.

More seriously the sound quality isn't great. Surprising as it's a Phillips all-digital, but it feels like an perfect digital representation.... of sitting in the back row of Symphony Hall. You can really hear the room accoustics (in a bad way) and the soundstage feels like the orchestra is distant from you, not around you.

A fine collection, featuring some of John Williams lesser-known pieces, such as the overture from the film 'The Cowboys,' the march from the film 'Midway,' and his inspiring 'Olympic Fanfare and Theme.' While most of the other pieces will be quite familiar (Jaws, Star Wars, Superman) Willams' music was usually at its very best when he was conducting the Boston Pops orchestra, and this album is no exception.

This was one of the very first CDs I purchased, way back in the 1980s when CDs were pretty new--and it's still one of my favorites. (I bought this one on Amazon after misplacing my original.) The recording is fine--I especially enjoy the sparkle of the bell parts and the powerful "thump" of the bass drum part (played by Neil Grover on some cuts) when listening on a quality sound system. Particularly enjoyable are some lesser-known John Williams pieces, like the overture from "The Cowboys," and the theme from the John Belushi non-hit movie, "1941." I still play lots of these pieces as demos for my high school band students. A great album!

All the music most people associate with John Williams is on here, and it's a modern digital recording that was mastered before the loudness wars started. Plus the Boston Pops orchestra is always fun to listen to.

My reasons for getting this album were because (1) I'm a fan of John Williams' soundtracks, and (2) I wanted to listen to "Liberty Fanfare", a piece Williams composed for the Centennial of the Statue of Liberty in 1986. Asides from "Liberty Fanfare", this album also includes Williams conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra in renditions of some of his other famous compositions, such as "Olympic Fanfare and Theme" (which Williams composed for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles), "The Mission" (which Williams wrote as the opening theme for NBC News. The Mission is also used as the opening music of Australia's 7 News) as well several of Williams' most famous soundtrack music, such as Superman, the Star Wars trilogy, E.T. and Jaws to name a few. I strongly recommend this to any fan of John Williams the Maestro of the Movies.
