The Who needed two rock operas to reach their apex, but Genesis climaxed first time out with The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. On the live version which takes up half of this four-CD box, the Peter Gabriel-fronted incarnation goes out with a bang, dressing up its art rock in black leather and brass knuckles. Disc 3's live renditions of "Supper's Ready" and "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight" are nearly as powerful, while Disc 4's demos from the embryonic late-'60s lineup offer a pleasing glimpse into the group's folk and psychedelic roots. Expansive yet muscular, this compelling set shows Gabriel and company paving the way for a generation of pop explorers right up through Radiohead. Genesis 1 chronicles the early Genesis -Peter Gabriel era-particularly the mythic live shows. I am fascinated not only with the superb music but Gabriel's lyrics-mythological tales filled with referances to Jungian depth psychology (particularly with the Lamb) I can only dream about the stage fantasy evoked by Gabriel in that era. I live in the deep South and never got to see this origional band on tour in the United States.

Well, i could easily have given this compilation a 4 star, and i will explain why i didnt. First of all, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is played in its entirety, and that is something that all of us Genesis fans wanted to hear, the problem, Peter's voice has been overdubbed because he didnt like how he sounded originaly. So this is a bit of a letdown. Its sounds good. But still i would have liked to listen to the original sounds and how it sounded. Everything else is top notch quality, sounds a lot better than i expected.

Le coffret idéal pour les "vieux" qui veulent se replonger dans la phénoménale tournée de 1974 "lamb lies down", ou pour tous les jeunes qui veulent revenir à la genèse d'un rock progressif, post Pink Floyd et ante Underground.

Man kann sich mit vielen Leuten ja herrlich darüber streiten, wie lange Genesis wirklich Genesis waren, für mich waren es auf jeden Fall ausschliesslich die "Gabriel-Jahre". Davon gibts jetzt reichlich neues Futter: Auf 4 CDs ist Material aus der Gabriel-Ähra zusammengefasst, dass in der Form noch nicht, oder nicht mehr zu bekommen war. Cd 1 und 2 sind ein fast kompletter (und wohl auch der einzig erhaltene) Mitschnitt der "Lamb lies down"-Tour von 1975. Klanglich gut aufbereitet vor einem zurückhaltenen Publikum (die LP war zum Zeitpunkt des Konzertes noch nicht erschienen). Es gibt reichlich Improvisiertes und ausführliche Ansagen von Gabriel.
CD3 beihaltet frühere Live-Mitschnitte, CD4 schliesslich frühe Demos, Singles und B-Seiten (klanglich teils allerhöchstens als interessant zu bezeichnen).
Das alles gibts in einem sehr schönen Karton mit einem aufwändigen Booklet indem jeder der früheren Mitglieder und Wegegfährten ausführlich das Material beschreibt.
