Aqualung, my friend!
5 out of 5 stars
Aqualung, my friend!
I had been wanting to fill a gap in my classic rock vinyl collection, Jethro Tull's "Aqualung" LP, but all the used copies i found were in terrible shape. When i searched online and found there was a Steven Wilson remix version done on 180g vinyl, brand new and reasonably priced to boot--i said "I'm in," and the record delivered DELIVERS, meeting my high expectations. I was familiar with Wilson's voodoo as applied to Chicago II (the Silver, second LP)--amazing crisp separation of sound, opening my ears to instruments and nuances in songs I'd heard hundreds of times before. So it is with this version of "Aqualung." You likely know the title track and Locomotive Breath, but every song on this record is a jewel, polished by the Wilson mix. My record shipped on time, was in great shape, and played pristine: golden silence between the tracks and tremendous sound springing from the speakers on the rockers and the beautiful softer tracks (Wondering Aloud) alike. A thorough booklet with history of the recording sessions with Ian Anderson and other band members quoted. A great package. My only negative was that i have not yet gotten the digital download code to work for me--but with vinyl this good--i won't miss the download that much.

Of course this album is great, It is one of those great, must have, sophisticated rock albums of the 70s. The Steven Wilson remix is stellar! That guy really knows what he’s doing. I have all the Yes Albums that he’s remixed and they are such a treat to listen to!
Just so everybody knows, this album has been remixed, not remastered. Remastering means that you’re just sprucing up the original mix which can be great. This is remixed…. which means Steven Wilson got a hold of the original tapes with all the instruments and vocals and flutes on separate tracks and then mixed it to his liking. It’s kind of his interpretation within the confines of the original recording. You can make everything sound a little more present day by pumping up the bass guitar and the kick drum. You can bring down the vocals on certain parts and bring up other things that were buried in the old mixes. It’s like baking a cake. Mixing an album is almost just like baking and cake. You can decide how much sugar you want to use and how many spices or whatever you wanna do. Steve Wilson seems to know what to do to make everything sound amazingly good! Get ready for some sonic bliss!!!

When the Japanese do things they tend to do it right and the whole issuance of these Mini-LP-CD's has been a blast from the past with true care for the sound of the album. While ordinary CD's can sound quite nice at 16 bit, there are HDCD's High Definition versions which use either 20 or 24 bit recording technology adding 25 to 50% more musical information to a CD. This results in warmer and fuller sounding music from the disc and most modern CD players have the technology built in.

Here the offering is 24 bit and with 50% more of the music information filling in all those little holes, making this cd is a joy to hear. After listening on my pretty good sounding system I took it to my friend's house to listen to on his basic $25K plus audiophile system and it has definately been a blessing to hear. Sweeter, warmer and a fuller sound than your regular CD's.

    Side One
Aqualung / Cross Eyed Mary / Cheap Day Return / Mother Goose / Won'dring Aloud / Up to Me

    "Side Two"
My God / Hymn 43 / Slipstream / Locomotive Breath / Wind Up

Presentation is superb as a Japanese Mini-LP-CD instead of the jewel case the CD is presented as a miniature of the original vinyl album was released, so here there is a mini gatefold album cover the linernotes and an extra sheet in Japanese of the album's information. It also has the Miniature OBI the slip of paper that is around the one side of the original album that is a Japanese tradition. (As a Side Note: Japanese pressings are pretty much audiophile for vinyl albums to begin with and so the audiophile guys look for the Obi as proof of origin and quality.)
This is why the listing while on one CD shows the original yinyl album song line up for sides one and two.

Those not old enough to have heard this album may not realize that the entire album was FM radio fodder and just about every cut is really something to listen to musically and for the meaning of the songs. It deals with "bums" low class people who are destitute and are doing what ever to get by, the lack of care for them, and how it seems the organized religion does not help but is a place of pompusness. He rails against not Christianity but against those that control the religion. It is a quintesential phase of Jethro Tull music to have in your library if you like Tull. It has some of the charming presentation of the early stuff, but is not as much hippie music as a more hard rock mix with classical to Renaisance Fair to Mideval undertones and remains a musical tour de force. It is very "English" but it was really well received by the US listeners and the Hits from this release Locomotive Breath, Cross Eyed Mary and the title cut Aqualung blasted Jethro Tull into a higher fame plane of orbit here in the US market.

Other albums worth a listen ARE: Thick As A Brick which has a similar musical outlook, and then Warchild which has some changes in delivery but is very interesting. If you like Hippie styled music the early stuff is fabulous too like Stand Up.

So if you have a low end stereo or do those horrid MP3's - don't bother with the good copies from Japan, it's a waste of the HDCD technology, get the regular CD. But if your stereo of Home Theater is in the good / better / best type and you'd like to hear a fine version but don't need to deal with an SACD or DVD-Audio version, these Mini-LP-CD's are the ticket.

    Happy Listening!

I didn't take any pictures of this product and it doesn't matter because the proof is in the listening! I bought the original album in 1972 and have been listening to, and enjoying it since then...until now that is. Steven Wilson did such a remarkable job of re-mastering this album I have to agree with the pro commenters that I'm hearing bass and high notes that were never on the original pressing.

The brilliance of Ian Anderson and his crack cohort of musicians never sounded better than on this album. The platter is 180 gram vinyl and included is a very comprehensive booklet filled with never seen pictures and information about the band and album. If you're an Aqualung fan you MUST on this vinyl copy.

Arrived quick. Good sound, but heard better. The piano and Martin's guitar and mandolin come out clearly and melodically. That said, the cd seems to lack a fullness. Seems to be missing some bottom end. In Ian's interview at the end of the cd you'll hear him saying the conditions at the studio weren't the greatest. Think I'll try the vinyl.

From way back when I was younger. This is still a magnificent listen and on vinyl it is especially warm and pleasing. I have the remastered and updated cd version as well, but it's hard to beat the nostalgia of listening to Jethro Tull on vinyl.

5.0 out of 5 stars 3* drums sound like plastic buckets, muddy lacks vibrancy, an early vinyl pressing is better

CD Review: Chrysalis 1998 Prism SNS System

3* is being kind to this recording which sounds flat, lifeless with no presence. Seek out an early pressing on vinyl to experience the beauty of this music. A later CD may be better.

    • Clarity – poor dull muted
    • Channel separation – poor limited
    • Channel balance – poor limited by lack of clarity
    • Sound Stage – lacking, artificial Prism SNS system seems to have muddied presence & image
    • Distortion – non audible
    • Compression – lacks dynamic range and depth. Lacks range of UK 1st vinyl pressing
    • Atmosphere – non existent
    • Bass – low frequencies – drums sound like plastic buckets being hit, cymbals weak lack definition. Bass guitar lacks tone & detail
    • Treble – high frequencies – flute is flat, fails to soar, muddy, no life, vibrancy or range. Keyboards have a muddy sound with little or no range
    • Vocals – indifferent, clearly audible but lacking in range

I have not set out to write reviews of the music content as “beauty is in the ears of the listener”. These reviews are about the quality (or not) of the recorded sound. To read about how the reviews are done please see my profile.

As a general rule of thumb recordings from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are nearly always better on the original vinyl. Remasters often fail to please as it’s just not possible to make a silk purse from a sows ear, i.e. the original recording lacks the necessary detail to be processed digitally and show an audible improvement. Indeed such processing can make the sound worse.

Modern recordings which have been processed digitally from start to finish can be as good as vinyl. CD’s are often unfairly criticised for being poor quality. This is not the case, it is the original recording or the process which is to blame. Modern “remasters” can both enhance and degrade a recording. The statement GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) is the limiting factor. Ignore this at your cost.
