Product Description

After escaping with Newt and Bishop from the alien planet, Ripley crash lands on a planet designated as a correctional facility with a strict no-weapons policy. Rescue efforts are no where to be found. But when help does arrive, the true intentions of the Company become clear.

The least successful film in this series was directed by stylemaster (and content-underachiever) David Fincher. Ripley, the only survivor of her past mission, awakens on a prison planet in the far corners of the solar system. As she tries to recover, she realizes that not only has an alien gotten loose on the planet, the alien has implanted one of its own within her. As she battles the prison authorities (and is aided by the prisoners) in trying to kill the alien, she must also cope with a distinctly shortened lifespan that awaits her. But the striking imagery makes for muddled action and the script confuses it further. The ending looks startling but it takes a long time--and a not particularly satisfying journey--to get there. --Marshall Fine

I don't think this is a "misunderstood" movie. I understand perfectly what it was going for; it just plainly didn't work. I think it had potential (the idea of the alien chasing them through an abandoned prison is great, and the interesting touch of Ripley being the only woman in the middle of a group of convicted criminals is certainly interesting), but it squandered it thoroughly. Ripley goes from being a badass who is so dedicated to saving humanity from this alien that she's willing to strand ALL of them on the planet to die, to being too weak to off herself, making it necessary for her to get someone else to promise to do it?? And then, when it would make WAY more sense for her to sacrifice herself, rather than let another character sacrifice himself, she lets him die and just yells "noooo!"?! And WHY is that guy even interested in saving her, since he's the one who told her he'd kill her, when it was all over, and her dying down there with the alien would have meant it was all over?

There is NO character development for anyone (except possibly the medical officer, whom they promptly kill as soon as he's done giving Ripley his back story). The acting is weirdly stilted and uneven, and some of the dialogue is truly bad. I can't believe they even wasted a conversational exchange on why the prisoners should help her get rid of the alien. My issue with this movie isn't that it's different from the others, it's that no one is likable (not even Ripley). It's full of things that are not plot holes so much as complete nonsense. You can't just have characters spout cliches, swell some dramatic music and expect me to excuse the fact that none of the rest of it made any sense.

That said, some of the cinematography was creative. Yep, that's the only nice thing I have to say.

I actually really enjoyed Alien 3 when it came out originally. This special edition adds quite a few extra scenes that were trimmed from the original and while this works fairly well in the beginning of the film, pretty soon the contrast between deleted scenes and finished film become quite stark. The primary issue here is the sound, which fluctuates wildly in production between scenes. This feels too immersion-breaking for me personally, but if you're a fan of the original film, this might be a small price to pay for added footage.

All of this extra editing isn't bad, but the ending is flat out terrible! The gravity and religious symbolism of the original ending is completely absent here. The special edition's added scenes only serve to enhance the original's focus on Ripley's character complexity and relationship to the alien species. Yet in one fell swoop all of that buildup is undone and the story is left hanging with a much less satisfying resolution.

Warning: Amazon's Instant Video/streaming version is, as far as I can tell, just the old theatrical cut, not the extended "Assembly" or Special Edition one despite the listing showing a longer run time. Bummer. :(

Wonderfully bleak and atmospheric, I always thought that Alien 3 fit in beautifully with the series - despite the controversy and fan outcry it received upon release. This one's worth watching just for Charles S. Dutton's fantastic performance as a charismatic yet menacing spiritual leader to, as Ripley says, "a bunch of lifers who found God at the ass-end of space."

I got my dad to take me to see this , being such a huge fan of Aliens then, and still to this day. We both left the theatre that day disappointed, and that was my memory of this movie.

This version I enjoyed. 3.5/5. I couldn't tell you the differences vs the original, but it felt more complete. The finale sequence was true horror, very much felt like I was there with these guys waiting for the "beast" to show up around the next corner.

This is a much better Alien fix than Prometheus was. I think if they had released this movie in this cut and never released Resurrection, the trilogy would have been a nicely completed package with this flick worthy cannon. That is not to say however, that an alternate universe part 3, with Newt and Hicks, would be unwelcome.

If you're an Aliens junkie like me who only recalls how disappointing this movie was, but nary a detIl, give this a go. I'm glad I did.

It had really been awhile since I'd seen this one, so I had forgotten quite a bit and wasn't sure how it would be watching it after all these years. But I must say, for the same reason I've never understood why some people who love the first cant enjoy the second, I can't understand why people belittle it so. In perspective of the first, it doesn't compare. Nothing does; it's simply fact. (Thank you, Ridley Scott rules!) However, this film does not fail on nearly as many levels as people would like to accuse it of. It's darkly lit and filmed, which I love. It's got a single Alien, which I love. It's got simple dialogue, which most people love; I'm not a huge fan, but what can you expect in a prison, no? It's got bad guys who are scared s***less bad guys and make no bones about it, which I love. And it's got Charles Dance, whom I adore for his role in Last Action Hero. Basically, if you watch it in any attempt to recapture the feel of either of its predecessors, don't bother. Just enjoy it for what it is. Somewhat jumpy, a little campy, and an almost-bald Sigourney Weaver.
