The king of pop parodies returns with another zany collection of tunes that poke fun at pop culture. There are a handful of undeniably funny moments--notably "The Saga Begins," which pairs the tune to Don McLean's horrendously sentimental "American Pie" with the plot to the first Star Wars prequel, and a fun, nonstop-dancing polka medley of late-'90s hits that starts with the Spice Girls and ends with Semisonic. Overall, Running with Scissors is well-executed and actually humorous, but the material is a day late and a dollar short. "Pretty Fly for a Rabbi" is funny once, maybe, but the majority of the disc consists of tepid takes on yesterday's news; the best jokes are devoted to Jerry Springer, Eddie Vedder, the Swing craze, and this place called Silicon Valley where they make computers. Why didn't someone tell Weird Al that a parody of Nine Inch Nails' lifeless industrial pop would have already sounded dated in 1995? It must be hard to stay on top of all the current trends and parody them as they happen, but that is something that Weird Al has done in the past, and perhaps will do again. --Mike McGonigal

Trying to catch up with some of Weird Al's classic albums (now that his contract is completed and he can start releasing songs when he wants). There are some great songs here ("The Saga Begins," "Albuquerque," "Your Horoscope for Today," & "Grapefruit Diet") although it also, unfortunately, includes "Pretty Fly for a Rabbi" which has to be Pretty Offensive for a Jewish Person. The more I listen to Weird Al the more I realize how he tries his best to be pretty clean in his lyrics but also can use some terms that aren't totally PC.

But, it's still a fun album with only one song I have to skip every time (maybe two if you count "Jerry Springer," a weird parody of "One Week" which talks about a she-male and a gay Jewish black dude).

This is a great 90s reference filled album! The tracks I enjoy the most include The Saga Begins and Polka Power, but It's All About the Pentiums and Pretty Fly for a Rabbi are some diamonds in the rough too! The only track I find myself skipping is Truck Driving Song, but that's intentionally made to be over the top and cheesy. This is an excellent album to get!

前作と本作との間、"Weird AL"先生のキャリアに重要なことがありました。全米向け冠番組｢Weird AL Show｣を持ったことです。毎週土曜の30分番組でしたが、毎回有名なミュージシャンがゲストに登場してのトークショーで、その博識ぶりとインタビュアとしての才能に改めて全米が驚いた番組です。ちょうど、日本でのタモリが｢今夜は最高｣｢音楽は世界だ｣などの番組で、かなり奥深い学識(楽識？)を披露していた、あの感じです。

この番組のテーマ曲、もちろん"Weird AL"先生の自作ですが、本作に収録されてます。ポルカメドレーも勿論入ってます。C.W.マッコールばりのカントリーテノールを聴かせる｢Truck drivin'song｣、以後のライブでは旧作YODAと共にアンコールの定番になった｢Saga begins(StarWarsのルークを主題にした歌詞)｣、やっぱりNirvanaと来ればPearlJamもだろう｢Eddie Vedder｣、パソコン･ネット関連ネタでは初出の｢'bout Pentiums｣、同じく健康関連ネタ初出で少々気持ち悪い｢Germs｣など、どこから聴いても佳曲揃いのアルバム。

前作と本作との間には、もうひとつ重要なことが。｢Weird AL Show｣放映中の９月のある日、それまでのアフロ･ひげ･メガネの容貌から一変、現在のカッコいい姿になりました。理由は判りませんが。あと、声質がそれまでのコミカルで軽い感じから、太く密度の高いものに変わりました。これも理由は判りませんが、もしかしたら｢Spy Hard｣主題歌を録るにあたり、何らかのボイトレをやったのかも知れません。でないと、あのTomJonesにも劣らぬダイナマイトボイス唱法は出来ないでしょう。

実は私、このアルバムよりも先に、アルバム発売記念ライブツアー｢Touring with Scissors｣のDVDを購入しました。ネタばらしで済みませんが、"Weird AL"先生のご両親がMCを務めて颯爽と登場した"Weird AL"先生の姿を観て、あまりのカッコ良さに衝撃を受けました。こちらもお薦めです。

なお、本作から日本盤が作られなくなりました。つまり、歌詞の日本語訳はありません。もっとも、英語の歌詞カードは(少なくとも正規盤ならば)入っていますので、特に問題もありませんが。
