Update: I returned this back to Staples. Found another seller on ebay giving me a Belkin one brand new [$$$]with priority shipping. (This confirms my suspicion that this product should cost only around 10 bucks). So guys don't pay 40 bucks for this simple piece of hardware.
WARNING: This driver is CLEARLY not meant for XP; heck, XP didn't exist when it was written. It works, but you should definitely make backups before installing it. If your computer breaks and you have to reinstall windows because of this driver, no one will cry for you.
1) Download the driver from netgear: [...]
2) The driver comes in a .exe file, which is really a .zip file (go figure). Unzip the driver, and note the location of the unzipped folder. At this point, you may notice that there are "installation instructions" inside the folder ("README.txt"). Don't bother with those; they're meant for Windows 2000, and are not relevant to Windows XP.
3) Plug in the netgear device. The "New device found" bubble should pop up in your taskbar. After 30 seconds or so, you'll be informed that device installation failed.
4) On your desktop, right-click on your computer and select "Properties". Go to the "Hardware" tab and click the button labeled "Device Manager". A new window with a list of devices should pop up. Click the "+" sign next to "Network Adapters"; you should see an entry labeled "NETGEAR EA101 USB Ethernet Adapter" with a question mark overlaid on a small icon next to it. If you've gotten this far, good for you.
5) Double-click on the netgear entry mentioned above. In the "Driver" tab, click the button labeled "Update Driver". Select "Install from a list or specific location" and click "next", then "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install" then "next", then click "Have Disk." Navigate to the folder you unzipped in step 2 and select the file "NETEA101.INF". At this point, a bunch of scary warnings windows will pop up about how the device is unsigned and stuff. You can click "install anyway" (or whatever the text is; I don't have the window in front of me), and now everything should work.
After installation, you should see a new entry in "Network Connections" (under "Control Panels") entitled "Netgear Network Adapter." Note that you may have to unplug and re-plug the adapter after each restart; my computer did not recognize the device if it was plugged in during the boot-up process.
Additionally, note that, as the warning window says, this may increase system instability and lead to future crashes. If you start experiencing problems with your computer after installing this driver, follow all the steps in 4 and 5, except instead of clicking "Update Driver" click the button labeled "Uninstall", and follow the instructions from there.
Tips for Win 98 users:
1. Make sure you have all the necessary protocols set on each machine in your network
2. Choose a simple, one word name for your workgroup
3. Assign static IP addresses to your machines for ethernet networking
(These tips are NOT product specific. Anyone trying to network home machines may run into troubles because of these factors.)
Plug in and enjoy!
If you want a USB network adapter, this is the product for you. The price is right and it won't fail you.
My frustration was that I found this information out only after I'd bought the thing.
If you're looking for an ethernet adapter for a laptop, I recommend a PCMCIA card; that was my eventual solution. They are more reliable (and faster).
Overall, I love Netgear products. My 2 star rating on this is not final. I am hoping that the new unit installs and operates as it should.
I hope that this helps someone.
Bob L.
