It's hard to believe that this is the debut CD created by award-winning performance-art sensations the Blue Man Group, whose off-the-wall and high-tech, highly percussive show has been an off-Broadway hit since the beginning of its uninterrupted run in 1991. This CD is not a soundtrack; while some pieces appear in the show, they are presented here with extra instruments, performers, and recently developed instruments. In addition to making abstract paintings by pouring paint onto kettledrums then bashing on them until the color pours onto an awaiting canvas, the Blue Man Group make their own instruments out of unexpected, often very simple materials. Creations used to make this record include air poles, the big drum, the PVC instrument, the backpack tubulum, and the drum wall (no, David van Tieghem is not a member of the group). Those homemade instruments notwithstanding (which are most striking visually anyway), the heavily rhythmic nature of the music, combined with the guitar as a focal element, reminds one of early-to-mid-1980s art-rock. The opening salvo--a two-minute number--starts off subtle and pleasing enough, with slowly building layers of percussive sound and overlapping soundtrack-y guitar lines vaguely reminiscent of Ennio Morricone, the great soundtrack composer that everyone rips off. The entire disc will highly satisfy the faithful and serve as intriguing background music for everyone else. --Mike McGonigal

Perfect Percussion

"Audio" is an astonishingly good CD that is as representative of a Blue Man Group performance as a studio album could be (much of the material is seen in the various incarnations of live shows.) The sonic quality of the CD is superb, and as expected the percussion in particular is astonishingly layered and nuanced. I find I play several of the songs on "Audio" repeatedly, with the top three being "TV Song," "Opening Mandelbrot," and what I consider to be the defining Blue Man Group piece "Drumbone." If you are interested like I am, there is a very interesting insert with the CD explaining the instruments used, how they are played, and how other bits of information more dedicated fans or the percussion-obsessed will find endlessly fascinating.

"Audio" is a great album of an absolutely original musical style. It's great for repeat listening as is the equally compelling album "The Complex."

Format: DVD AudioVerified Purchase

Some people deride the Blue Man Group for not being musicians or not making "music". Well, the music may be rather percussive in nature and somewhat different, but it's still music. It's music that kicks a$$! Many of the songs start off somewhat quiet and build in intensity as they go. If you start listening to it loud it will be really loud before long and those dynamics really add to the emotion of the music. BMG makes heavy use of a number of drumming type instruments that are largely their own inventions, but this album also makes use of a number of string instruments including baritone guitar, bass, zither and others. The combination makes for some very interesting music. This is an instrumental album but don't let that dissuade you. You will want a full 5.1 system with a good sub to really enjoy this. The DVD has a DVD-audio side that would need to be played on a DVD-audio player. If you don't know what this is then you probably don't have one (although some players from a few years back incorporated DVD-A and SACD so check your manual but it would still need to be connected to a 6 channel in on a compatible receiver). The disc also has a regular Dolby digital DVD side as well that will play in any DVD player. I haven't listened to that side yet but based on past experience it's probably not that dissimilar to the DVD-a side. There isn't any video with the music but they do show some still photos from the concerts. There is also a short video discussing a bit of the history of the BMG and some other short extras like text entries on some of the instruments.

If you have any interest in the Blue Man Group, I highly recommend this album. It's quite energetic and fun and good music as well. If you know nothing about them, you still might enjoy this - especially if you like things a bit different and especially percussive. Overall, a good buy.

Not Quite the Real Thing

10pm on November 25, 2001 The Blue Man Group takes their place on stage in the Astor Place Theater in New York City. Instantaneously I become a fan. From the front row the combination of auditory and visual stimuli creates a tremendous surge of energy throughout my entire being. The groups originality and ingenious development of percussion instruments provides a musical experience like no other. Sixty seconds into the show I realize I must own the Audio CD. Back at home with headphones on, volume up, the music surrounds my mind. While listening I find myself wishing that I was back in NYC for one more show. Because as good as the CD sounds, the live show provides what the CD cannot. The CD, although offering more music, is not as encompassing as the live show. With a repetitive sound on some tracks the CD at times becomes redundant. In summary, the CD provides phenomenal percussive sounds that will entertain the listener. So long as the listener has not been privy to the real thing.

Purchased to replace our previous disc which mysteriously disappeared. I'm sure others have given more concise reviews, mentioning the artists who added vocals to this CD, but my wife and I just love it. We bought the original after seeing them perform in Las Vegas, back when the show was somewhat affordable.

DVD Audio sound quality

I already owned and loved the CD and after some thought, I ordered audio DVD as well, just to enjoy the tracks in better quality. The DVD contains surround (5.1) mix, 24 bit / 192 kHz, which is pretty neat all by itself. Unfortunately, couple of the tracks contain some pretty loud annoying clicks that should not be there. Also, the music is mastered quite silent with plenty of headroom, which is a good thing in general, but in here, they went too far, making the music too silent. This in turn forces replaygain in my player to switch from -6 dB to -7.12 dB because of clipping problems, which is annoying (but not technically wrong in any way). It's a minor issue all in all, but along with the clicks it mostly discourages me from adding this disc to the playlist. Not a good DVD Audio release.

...if you're in Vegas and have a chance to see the show at the Luxor, by all means do. By most accounts it is the best show of the four major cities where BMG performs.
As for the music, it is pretty good stuff as far as ambient tunes are concerned. However, there are perhaps three or four tracks you can listen to with regularity, and not want to subsequently use the CD as a frisbee. This music (while not a soundtrack) is very definitely geared towards the visual effects present in the stage show, and frankly is almost identical to the show tunes.
Thus several of the tracks have beats and rythms which will wear on you if you don't have the visuals to go with it. All in all a fun collection of music though. Definitely worth the money. [....]
