Not a lot of people got the essence of this film when it was first released but now that we're all a little older and wiser we need to give this film a second chance. I almost dismissed this movie until a friend accidentally left his own DVD copy of THE BEACH at my house I I gave it a try. I was blown away and had a hard time just trying to give it back!
The photography is beautiful, the editing is dynamic, the music made me fall in love with it. Even the menus on the DVD are an experience to be had and the more I saw the movie the better I liked it every time. I might be biased since I also love the SoundtrackThe Beach: Motion Picture Soundtrack -which by the way is one of the best road trip records you could ever imagine- and by the fact that Lonardo DiCaprio and Tilda Swinton are two of my favorite actors but it's nice to see that this little underrated film has survived the passing of time like only the classics do.

Give it another try and maybe, like me,you will discover something you didn't know you'd love.

The Beach is a beautiful film (mostly locations) with some great dramatic moments. It's one of the few movies that really tackles the detrimental effects of western tourism as a form of hedonistic colonialism. Director Danny Boyle though often takes things too far; pushing the drama to the point of being cheesy or just outright absurd.

This was a great summer movie about a kid that travels to Thailand because he's tired of doing being like everyone else. But, a man that kills himself gives him a secret map to a perfect beach with all the weed any one person could ever smoke, a beach all to themselves, but is it a perfect beach?

Fun to watch the beautiful scenes of Phi Phi. However, they contrast with the behavioral and bloody scenes. Purposely contrasting for effect and emotion.

A drama doesn't always have to stick so closely to reality that it unwaveringly mirrors everyday life. The entertainment value of a film sometimes hinges on its travel outside the normal realm of societal norms. The Beach has just the right amount of reality, combined with the abstract 'dream-come-true' situation and all that comes with it. The Beach focuses uniquely on the youthful psyche of one man, whose search for adventure outside the 'norm' leads him to what appears to be paradise. But, as in reality, nothing dreamlike is perfect and without its price. This is very well portrayed in The Beach. I do see its similarity with Lord of the Flies, but The Beach burrows more deeply into a young man's mind who chose his path instead of being thrust into it involuntarily.

Like The Beach, the classic 70s film Papillon travels a bit outside conventional methods for telling a story to relay emotion that engages the viewer and entertains. Those who have seen this film will note that Steve McQueen's memorable vision-of-death sequence climbs outside the box, but is entirely fitting and appropriate to the movie's successful progression. That movie is a classic, despite its unusual plot execution.

Therefore, I'm open to a fantastical film with its foundations in reality. I enjoy watching The Beach over and over.

Used to be one of my favorite films. Really captures the feeling of being young and traveling. Solid performances by Tilda Swinton and Leonard Di Caprio. The soundtrack is great too.

I saw previews for this not long after Titanic came out so I figured it was another boring romance movie with Leonardo DiCaprio. The preview all showed a bunch of skinny people on a magical secluded beach. Then my friend told me about the plot twist so I checked it out. Great movie, I wish they would make it for BluRay, not sure why they haven't.

If you haven't read the book, this movie can be confusing at times. Also, forced romance plots that aren't in the book take away from the story.
