Editorial Reviews

It's evil vs. evil in an electrifying showdown that USA Today calls "…the best excuse to root for the bad guy since Arnold in the original Terminator." The daylight can burn you, but the darkness will kill you. From the mind of the writer of The Fugitive comes the psychological terror when a group of marooned passengers must face a pack of terrifying creatures whose only weakness is the light. With little power and dwindling numbers, the doomed passengers turn to a vicious convict (Vin Diesel) with an appetite for destruction and eerie eyes that can guide them through the darkness.

Pitch Black is a wonderful combination of science fiction, horror and drama all in one movie. This is the first time the Riddick character is seen in a movie. Vin Diesel was born to play this tough, vicious and strange anti-hero Riddick character. He is a prisoner on a space ship which crash lands on what first appears to be an uninhabited planet with two suns. After the crash landing, Riddick was no longer on the ship. After one of the bounty hunters was killed by an unknown thing, the group began hunting for Riddick, who they think killed the bounty hunter. This quickly changes when the group discovers the planet is not uninhabited and there vicious creatures who are sensitive to light, but come out in the dark. The planet also rotates so that it becomes "PITCH BLACK." This is when the horror begins for the group. Riddick winds up leading the group in the dark to someplace safe, but as you know, things never go as planned.

This movie sets the stage for the sequel, "The Chronicles of Riddick" as well as the animated version, "Dark Fury" to come out. Since I am looking forward to the newest Riddick movie to come out in two weeks, I again watched Pitch Black, Dark Fury and The Chronicles of Riddick.

In conclusion, if you have not seen Pitch Black yet you may want to check it out before seeing the newest Riddick movie due out soon. In fact, you may want to check out all three previous Riddick movies. I like all the Riddick movies thus far and look forward to seeing the newest one.

Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Predator Hunter: A warrior's memoir)

Pitch Black is a sci-fi horror flick in a similar vein as the Alien movies (Alien [Blu-ray], Aliens [Blu-ray]), although not quite as good. It begins with a group of space travelers who awaken from cryo-sleep to find that their ship has been damaged and is on a collision course with a desert-like planet. After a white-knuckle crash landing, the survivors try to find their way back home, while avoiding the dangerous escaped prisoner Riddick (Vin Diesel, who oozes cool). Along the way, they discover that they are not the only creatures on this planet. And with night coming, their chances of survival plummet.

Director David Twohy keeps the tension up throughout and gets good performances from the actors, which is not always the case in these types of films. Radha Mitchell is both strong and sympathetic as the defacto leader of the group. Cole Hauser, who plays the mercenary Johns, is a capable foe for the Riddick character.

The movie has a slick look, with an appealing use of color tinting. The special effects look a bit dated now, particularly the animation of the creatures, but they are still good enough for some scares. The blu-ray transfer is well done--both audio and visual are strong. The daytime scenes are crisp and detailed. The nighttime scenes are a little grainy, but still very good.

This edition contains both the theatrical version of the movie and the unrated director's cut, which is a bit more gruesome.

A friend of mine in High School had a cool collection of super hero comics. Me, I always felt that " Anti- heroes" were the most interesting.. Riddick, Batman ect ... They were forced into their roles and never wanted to be who they became.. I can relate to that.. Can You?? Good -hearted and looking for peace of mind and soul.. Instead evil comes along and throws a galaxy size wrench into their lives.. Out comes characters like Riddick.. Instead of tucking their " tails" in between their legs.. They get on their feet and stop at nothing to defeat the evil that sought to kill them for no good reason .. Like I said.. My kind of hero.. Or should I say--- Antihero.. Buy this and look closely at Riddick.. He is an example for all who have been victimized by evil.. More movies PLEASE!!! Buy this and enjoy..

This film is an instant classic and will remain timeless because it doesn't get too deep into technology. In other words, it's a great sci-fi story that is not concerned with how things work, just that they do work. And, one problem with that is, sometimes things break. Such was the case with a passenger spacecraft with a marshall and his captive as a pair of those passengers. The ship crashes on a harsh alien planet, so survival is the first order of business. That evolves into a battle for survival. I felt that the script excellently increased the tension in the film by allowing Riddick to escape, and rather than this being a horror flick about a serial killer, that fear is transferred to alien species capable of ripping people apart. Oh, and, the sun goes out every 20 years during a very long eclipse. Riddick is no longer a terrifying serial killer but the only man capable of actually dealing with the aliens.
