Product Description

In a small woodsy Oregon town, a group of friends--sensitive Gordie (Wil Wheaton), tough guy Chris (River Phoenix), flamboyant Teddy (Corey Feldman), and scaredy-cat Vern (Jerry O'Connell)--are in search of a missing teenager's body. Wanting to be heroes in each other's and their hometown's eyes, they set out on an unforgettable two-day trek that turns into an odyssey of self-discovery. They sneak smokes, tell tall tales, cuss 'cause it's cool and band together when the going gets tough. When they encounter the town's knife-wielding hoods who are also after the body, the boys discover a strength they never knew they had. Stand by Me is a rare and special film about friendship and the indelible experiences of growing up. Filled with humor and suspense, Stand by Me is based on the novella 'The Body' by Stephen King.

Additional Features

Looking back on the popular 1986 film 14 years later, director Rob Reiner has several great stories to tell about his breakthrough hit. Reiner's folksy commentary and a new 35-minute featurette (with new interviews from the cast) illustrate how much of the film draws from the personal experiences of Reiner and novelist Stephen King. Both the featurette and Reiner's commentary touch on the tricky casting of the film (starring four adolescent boys), the problems with finding the right narrator (finally performed by Reiner's childhood friend, Richard Dreyfuss), and the ironic sadness of River Phoenix's death (whose character's premature death triggers the flashback that comprises almost all of the film). Descriptions of the production's originial producer-screenwriters and long-shot logistics are, unfortunately, relegated to the liner notes. Also contains an isolated musical score track (punctuated by several early rock favorites), production notes, the MTV video of the title song, and digitally remastered audio and video. --Doug Thomas

I've been a Stephen King fan for a very, very long time. I've seen almost all of the film adaptations of his work and I have read all of his novels, short stories and novellas. Some of his works stand out for me more than others. Some of his stories go beyond the gore of horror to have real meaning and the story and its characters stick with you well after the credits roll on the movie or you turn the last page of the book. Stand By Me is one of those works.

Simply put, this story is about four young boys who set out on a journey to see the body of a boy who was killed by a train. Sounds pretty basic and run of the mill horror, doesn't it? It is anything but. The journey the four young heroes of the film takes is more than just walking the 20-25 miles to where the body is located. It is a journey of discovery for each one of them. All four boys are flawed in some way. They all have something holding them back and keeping pain in their lives. On the way to find the kid, they find themselves buried beneath those flaws, come to terms with their pain and emerge stronger for it. Chris (River Phoenix) admits to his best friend, Geordie (Wil Wheaton) the truth about what really happened to the milk money that forever labeled him as a "thief". Chris comes from a poor family with a bad reputation so no one even bothered to find out the truth. Geordie finally confronts the death of his beloved brother, the clear favorite of the Lachance boys. Geordie's parents died the day their eldest son did and barely stop to realize they have another son who needs them and that they can draw comfort and strength from the family they have left. Geordie has been the "invisible boy" all his life.

I distinctly remember when this movie came out in theaters because I had such a HUGE crush on River Phoenix. My mom made my sister and I wait until it came out on VHS before we could rent it. We must have rented it several dozen times before Mom cut us off.

I purchased the DVD version as a late Christmas gift to myself and I watched it last night with my two teenage daughters. I love it just as much now as I did as a 'tween and they really enjoyed it as well.

The story draws you in and you forget that these boys are just acting a part. The whole film was incredibly well done. It is probably one of the best Stephen King film adaptations.

I have noticed that there are several other reviews that comment on the language. I feel that it was appropriate in the context of the film. Most of the 12-13 year old boys that I knew used this same language when they were not around adults. People that say they never spoke like this when they were younger are likely misremembering the truth.

There are also some mildly violent scenes (one concerning Ace, Chris and a switchblade come to mind). Again, these are appropriate given the context. The most disturbing scene for me was when the boys found the dead body. The actual shot showing the body was very short and it was tastefully done--a little blood but nothing gory.

The end of the movie was also a little eerie, knowing what happened to River Phoenix in real life.

This is not a movie I would recommend for younger children based on the subject matter, language and mild violence, but it is an excellent movie for ages 12+.

Strangely, time has a habit of passing as fast as PEOPLE do. This-----THIRTY-YEAR-OLD-----movie is almost a historic
document. One of the stars has, since, passed; another one still lives... while the other Corey, also, is dead. One of the
stars of this classic film has become almost unrecognizable after a major weight loss. One spent some time on star treks.
Historic, indeed. The faces you recognize, you'll continue to see in the years to come

Stephen King got it right when (paraphrasing here) in the last line of narrative the adult character states: ".....I never had friends as great as when I was 12 years old...hell....does anyone?" The movie touches the heart while reminding us of childhood.
Especially in the time period which the movie depicts. (I grew up in that time and nothing can replace my memories of an innocent, happy adolescence of which I was part. Would that the American children of this day could have been lucky enough to have experienced those times. So much has been lost....) The film captures a life altering experience of four boys who, in seeking to find the missing body of another boy killed in an accident involving a train, learn many things about each others character and personality. Over the course of a day trekking over the hills and dales of Southwestern Oregon in the mid to late 1950's (and one memorable night spent around a campfire where a truly engaging and hilarious tale is spun by one of the boys) they seal the bonds of friendship. The dialogue is humorous and affecting as it evokes the remembrance of what it was like to be a boy growing up.
Some language may be offensive to some people, but it is realistic. If you can get past this, then I believe it is a film that the entire family can enjoy. Wonderful performances by all....
