Editorial Reviews

This critically-acclaimed thriller set in rural Texas combines chilling suspense with offbeat humor to create an all-American version of the classic "film noir." Abby (Frances McDormand) is cheating on her saloonkeeper husband, Marty (Dan Hedaya). The object of her affections is Ray (John Getz), one of Marty's bartenders. Marty hires Visser (M. Emmet Walsh), an unscrupulous detective, to kill them but Visser has other, more lucrative plans of his own. So begins a calculating round of double and triple crosses that build to a bloodcurdling, surprise-filled climax. It's an evil-minded masterpiece from the exciting filmmaking team of Joel and Ethan Coen. In Blood Simple, when someone's gone...it's never for good!

You know the movie's reputation at this point, so should you get the new edition? Yes. Of course. Buy it now.

The Criterion BLOOD SIMPLE has a fantastic 4K restoration of the film, an hour of telecined discussion about shot choices, lighting and visual storytelling with Barry Sonnenfeld and the Coen Brothers, a 45-minute discussion between the brothers and David Eggers and interviews with some of the cast. Hell, even Carter Burwell shows up to talk about how he composed his first film score!

I love this movie so much. I'm not really into watching things over and over these days, but every time I see Blood Simple I enjoy it as much as I did the first time. They managed to put so much into such a simple movie and it never fails to amaze me.
One issue though: I like to use the captions to make sure I heard something correctly if the actor mutters or is using an accent that is hard to pick up, and a LOT of Amazons movies don't have the captions synced up correctly so they are either showing dialogue from a minute before or after what is happening on screen. This is a real pain when you spend money to rent or buy the movie. It's not only unfair to the viewers, it's unfair to the people who have to pay upwards of $1,000 to get the captions made for the film before Amazon will put their movie into the selection. I've seen people complaining about it in reviews as far back as 2013. I contacted customer support, but after a 45 minute "chat support" session, all they said was "I'm going to write a ticket and pass this up the ladder to my superiors. Please hold as I may need additional info to complete the ticket". 25 minutes later they still hadn't said anything and when I said something they didn't respond so I logged out. Pretty sh^&y.

Even though it's interesting to see what the so- called noir filmmakers come up with, I only give this effort three stars because 1. The plot or premise of the movie is straight forward and simplistic, unlike most of the film noir movies I have seen which are convoluted, complex and multifaceted affairs. (See "Ruthless" for an example of a labyrinthine example of a simple human characteristic....greed. 2 The actors are fully up to the demands of the role, but Unfortunately there aren't many demands. It plays well if you believe modern realism such as Texas drawls and snide remarks might be where it's at; otherwise ,no. 3.This movie comes through as a straight forward double cross pic with very little off screen factors to complicate matters. Again some of the current crop of moviegoers may like it that away. A point for the Coen's first offering of what has become a highly praised series of slightly off beat crime flicks. Frances McDormand ,John Gets, M Emmett Walsh and the guy that plays the bar owner,Dan Hedaya offer fresh talents and flashes of inspiration to a so-so script.

    REVIEW:

Blood Simple (1984) M Emmett Walsh, Dan Hedaya, John Getz, Frances MacDormand

    Rated R.

Tagline: Dead in the heart of Texas.

A chilling black "comedy" in the who-gets-to be-dead-next tradition.
It's been said that when blood is involved, nothing is simple.
Dark and oddball is quite a niche to be carved.
    In a nut shell:
When you kill something, you might want to make sure that it stays dead.
This is the the first Indie film produced by the Coen brothers. Their movies are somehow always impossibly magical and bizarre, with more twists than a licorice stick.
Their trademark curve ball, when you expect a fast ball, is also in evidence in this debut motion picture. They are famous for exploring a dark universe where their characters are plunged into strange intrigue and an even stranger world which is forever revolving outside their grasp, with no way visible for them to cope, yet somehow they do... consequences be damned.
Greed and adultery and murder produce an icy concoction but some folks are mighty thirsty for this irredeemable brew and can hardly wait to chug it down. Chilled to the bone, of course.
Tense and facinating, gut wrenching and unpredictable.
Some hearts are beyond cold. Some are sub zero.
Dark as pitch and nastier than sin has a right to be.
Definately not a film for granny-O or the Cinderella set.

Blood Simple is the notable debut of the Coen brothers and in my opinion their best film until Fargo in 1996.
But since you're on this page, I'm assuming you know everything you really need to know about this film.

From the moment you see the main menu with it's classic haunting theme, you'll know that you made the right choice buying it. The bluray is a very fine transfer, and it also includes the audio commentary parody by Kenneth Loring of "Forever Young Films". In an appreciated departure from standard commentaries, the fictional Loring spews blatant nonsense about the film's production, and it's written by the Coens. You'll be pleased to learn that the early scene with Abby and Ray in the car was filmed upside down and backwards.

The picture quality is very good considering it is from an indie film from the 80's, and the cinematography is amazing, just like most of the Coen brothers films. You'll never get a better chance to see Marty try to "do it outside, in nature."

If you are a big fan of the Coen brothers, this is a must buy. If you just like this film, I recommend it just for the unique audio commentary.
