Essentially, the story centers around Cesar (Eduardo Noriega), an impossibly handsome moneyed bachelor who has but a few passions, and the most pronounced of those is sex. After spending time with Sofia (Penelope Cruz), his jilted girlfriend, Nuria (Najwa Nimri) drives her car off the road, killing herself and horribly mutilating Cesar's face. Soon after, reality begins to break apart, and Cesar must try to understand what led up to his being committed to an asylum, accused of a murder he doesn't remember committing. Then the fun starts. If you enjoy having the rug pulled out from under you, trying to put together the puzzle without all the pieces, then chances are you'll enjoy this little gem. However, this movie isn't about psychological tricks at all--if you check out the liner notes for the DVD, Amenabar has a sort of mini-essay where he says that the movie is about alienation, and the opening scene is an indellible image: the city of Madrid, home of 5 million people, completely empty. It always comes to mind when I'm walking down a lonely road.
So, you might be wondering, do I see this or the Tom Cruise American remake? The answer is: this one. It's not hard to see why this movie didn't fare quite so well in America--many people here have become so isolationistic and close-minded that they don't want to watch a movie with subtitles. Then again, these are the same people who complain that Hollywood doesn't make good movies anymore but don't bother to watch independent films either. Not only that, but this movie doesn't give much in the way of closure--it can be taken at face value, but too many small mysteries abound to bring about a final resolution, and many audiences here would just as soon not pay money to see a movie if they don't know what happened. I'm not a film snob, by the way--I have enjoyed a few Arnold Schwarzenegger movies in my day (he makes a better politician than actor) and I don't bore other people with harangues on the genius of Kubrick, Altman, Cassavetes, etc. The remake, though, was far more in spirit to American cinema today--all the ambiguities and mysteries that enrichened the original film were stripped out to create a film with less feeling and far more closure. I'm actually surprised that the remake got that close, considering the studios today.
Now, my soapboxing over, please enjoy the film. If you don't mind subtitles--heck, even if you don't like them but keep an open mind--you'll no doubt be enthralled, as I was.
But I think the main reason is that Tom Cruise does a better job with the character. The central vulnerability of a movie like this is that the protagonist is a rather unlikable person. When things are going well for him he's a jerk, and is particularly mean to his best friend. When things go bad he's insufferable. (A Clockwork Orange had a similar challenge). Cruise manages to be charming enough to allow us to care about him, although the remake also slightly tones down the character, which makes that easier. But in Open Your Eyes, I just never liked the character, so I couldn't get emotionally attached to his situation.
But I did like how Open Your Eyes was more upfront with the central twist of the movie. It actually reveals the twist early in the film without drawing attention to it, which is a much more honest way of handling these things. I'd already seen Vanilla Sky, so I don't know how much I would have picked up from this.
But watching Open Your Eyes also made me quite annoyed at how little Vanilla Sky changed from the original. I almost wonder how Crowe managed to claim credit for the screenplay. He gives "based on" credit to this film, when really he just took that script, changed the names, and altered maybe 5% of it. Directors will change more of a script than that while they're shooting. I'm not saying it's bad to stay faithful to the original, but Vanilla feels more like a copy than a remake.
I liked Penelope Cruz better in this one, and I think it's really cool that she's in both. On the other hand I liked psycho not-really-girlfriend Cameron Diaz better than the actress here.

This film was remade in 2001 by Cameron Crowe, starred Tom Cruise and was renamed Vanilla Sky. Now I love Cameron Crowe and enjoy Tom Cruise and the rest of the cast but something about Vanilla Sky just didn't work for me. I couldn't relate to the characters, I didn't like the climax, it felt cold and lifeless but most of all it just didn't feel right.
So I wasn't too interested in seeing the original as I hadn't really loved it and I now knew the twists. However, people kept saying the original was much better and essential viewing so I decided to give it a shot.
I am so glad I did because Open Your Eyes is fantastic. It's hard to explain but unlike Vanilla Sky everything in this movie just felt right. The cast seemed to give better, more emotional performances, the score was great, the Madrid location really tied into and grounded the story and the visuals seemed far better with excellent editing that gives it a very unique feel. Without spoiling anything, the ending is different to the remake, the original suggests a much more psychologically interesting and complex revelation. I never hated Vanilla Sky it was ok, but with Open Your Eyes I just immediately fell in love with it from the first shot. The performances are great, the exterior scenes in Madrid are great, the sets are beautiful and the imagery stunning. This is essential viewing for lovers of Spanish cinema (there is a little bit of Pedro Almodovar in this), Science Fiction (some Inception like emotional moments) and people who just want to see a brilliant film. This is a must see movie even if you've seen the remake or are lucky enough to be coming to it completely fresh.
