Product Description

In what was one of the more remarkable battles of the Civil War, in 1864 the Confederate army launched a primitive submarine, the C.S.S. H.L. Hunley, which attacked and sank a Union ship in Charleston Harbor off the coast of South Carolina. The Hunley was damaged severely in the battle and sank to the bottom of the ocean. About 130 years later, a team of researchers set out to find the Hunley and raise its remains to the surface. National Geographic Video: Raising the Hunley -- The Resurrection of a Civil War Legend is a documentary which looks at the history of this pioneering fighting ship and the effort that went into recovering it from the sea.

Sherpas of Nepal are the people who live in the mountaineous regions near Everest. Following his successful climb of Everest, Hilary asked the Sherpas how he could thank them. The result: he had bridges, schools and hospitals built throughout their region. Later he also brought other major benefits such as reforestation. Because of this, the Sherpa region began to thrive. Anyone who has climbed or trekked in the Everest region has benefitted from the many well constructed foot bridges across torrent rivers. I met Hilary in the high country during one of my 4 climbing trip to Nepal and saw how honored he was among the Sherpas working with our expedition. This movie is about the rich little known culture of the Sherpas and the tremendous humanitarian work Hilary performed among them before his death.

For mountaineering buffs, who associate Mount Everest with the idea of mountain climbing, the title to the DVD probably suggests the subject of mountain climbers who "survive" the DEADLY challenge of climbing the world's highest mountain. If so, you are mislead, and if that subject is what you sought in this DVD, this DVD is probably not for you.

The one star rating is not intended as a total condemnation of this DVD, which has merits in areas other than the subject which interests me (see previous two sentences). The title to this DVD does not address what this DVD is actually about, the subject of which is unique and is probably of interest to the right audience.

This video was reasonably interesting, especially in its discussion of the Classic Maya Cities of Copan and Dos Pilas. I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of diversity regarding sites covered. Copan is certainly one of the more important Maya cities and it deserved coverage, but what about Tikal, Palenque, Yaxchilan, and Bonampak, just to mention a few others. They also might have considered some coverage of some of the Epi-classic & Post-Classic cities, such as Uxmal, Chichen-Itza, and Tulum; as these sites are also favorite tourist destinations.
The video is also somewhat dated, as so many recent discoveries have since added volumes of knowledge about these amazing people. All in all, it is still a good video that does wet the appetite for more learning about the Maya.

I bought this dvd in the hope of watching Sir Edmund Hillary's conquest of Mt. Everest together with his humble climber in Tenzing Norgay. But it's all about the 30th anniversary celebration of his 1st man to climb Mt. Everest and his efforts in building schools for the kids there and also starting the Hillary Trust Fund.

Much of the video only shows the culture of the Tibetans and nothing more than that...much to my disappointment. The only true content was found in the bonus videos. At least there was some 30 min footage about climbing Mt. Everest and the challenges behind it and a short interview with Hillary.

Yes. Two stars is all I can give for this because I was misled by the title. 'Surviving Everest'. I think a more suitable title would be something like 'Sir Edmund Hillary learns Tibetan Culture'. Yeah. Something along that line.

I bought The Summit which was all about K2. That did not disappoint me at all! For mountain climbing enthusiasts, get this one!

I have seen some educational videos on the Maya, but I believe this is the best one I have come across so far. I was looking for a good educational video on the Maya to prepare a group trip to Honduras. We did an excursion to Copan, and the knowledge from this tape enhanced our experience. Compared to other videos about the Maya, this video was the best in the story telling of the history of the Maya and today's exploration with archeologists. I have been to other Mayan ruins as well, and I am still in awe of their lives and culture. If you plan on going to Copan or any of the other ruins, definitely this would be a good video to check out.

I bought this to see the adventure of the climb and there was very little of it. The majority of the video was on the Tibetan people, their lifestyle and culture. While that was somewhat interesting it is not what I thought this video would be about.
