Product Description

Imagine having to win over the girl of your dreams ... every friggin' day. That's the Adam Sandler Drew Barrymore romantic comedy 50 First Dates. Now imagine today's top artists recording new versions of classic '80s love songs in reggae style. That's the 50 First Dates soundtrack. From Wyclef & Eve covering The Outfield's "Your Love" and UB40 with The Police's "Every Breath You Take" to Jason Mraz with Modern English's "I Melt With You," and Seal on Echo and the Bunnymen's "Lips Like Sugar," 50 First Dates is the ultimate musical first date.

Amazon.com

The Cure and a reggae beat certainly make strange bedfellows as, one assumes, do Adam Sandler and a girl with no short-term memory. In that sense, the 50 First Dates soundtrack is a good accompaniment to a fluffy romantic comedy in which one of the main characters is perpetually living in the past. It's also a fitting follow-up to that other Sandler/Barrymore vehicle, The Wedding Singer. (Take a set by Robbie Hart, add a topical shirt, and voilá: a new soundtrack is born.) To those who can't get enough of '80s hits like Bryan Ferry's "Slave to Love" and the Cars' "Drive," setting them to a island beat will likely seem whimsical, charming, and perfect for barbecue weather. For those who are glad the '80s are gone, this CD is a pass. And for Sandler-completeists who crave lighthearted, comic tunes like "Forgetful Lucy," well, you obviously own this already. --Leah Weathersby

Not normally a fan of covers but there are some awesome covers on this soundtrack.

Don’t misunderstand, these are the songs from and as they were in the movie by the same artists. You are getting the real thing. Some of the songs in the movie were just not performed by the artists that made them famous.

Like the cd very much after watching the movie. I own many cds and there has never been an instance I could not rip to a mp3.

Never seen anything like this encoded data compact disc. I wanted to play in mp3 player in my auto. Disappointed about that.

Can I still download the files of this cd??

Hey, buddy. Yeah you, in the pink high collar jacket and vintage Voltron Aviators. C'mere for a minute. I'm not sure if anybody's told you yet, but did you know that reggae and new wave go together like chocolate and peanut butter? What's that, Johnny Slash? You don't believe me? You insist that these two brilliant yet divergent genres are just too far removed from one another to mix well? That new wave is a totally different head from reggae...totally? Well don't take my word for it! Just ask Santigold, Diplo, Gwen Stefani, M.I.A., or Wyclef Jean. Or better yet, just take a listen to this soundtrack!

I'm not sure who came up with the concept for this album, but its a brilliant one: reggae and reggae-inspired covers of 80s new wave classics! As I said before, its not like this hasn't been done before...Clef's been mashing these two genres up since before there was such a thing as mashups...but this is the first time that I know of that 12 such songs have been collected on a single compilation. Here's the rundown.

1.) The Thompson Twin's "Hold Me Now" is given the contemporary dancehall treatment by the legendary Wayne Wonder. I remember when they used to play this at Stone Love dances back in '04. Always got the ladies out on the dancefloor. Five stars.

2.) 311 attempts a note-for-note (*slightly* reggae-tinged) cover of The Cure's "Lovesong". To be honest, this one is kind of uninspired. Trying to out-do Robert Smith in the languor department is never gonna work out well. Three stars.

3.) Seal's cover of Echo & the Bunnymen's "Lips Like Sugar" works out better because he doesn't try to emulate or compete with the original, but takes it in a different direction, complete with a dancehall toast from an uncredited, Tiger-esque deejay. Four stars.

4.) "Your Love" is easily the best song on the album, and it oughta be. As I said above, Wyclef pretty much pioneered the idea of blending reggae, new wave, and hip hop (three of his self-professed favorite genres) back in the mid-90s when it would've been very easy for him to lose his street cred by doing so. Here, the former Fugee is at his best riding the bouncy Diwali Riddim on a dancehall-inspired reinterpretation of a vintage Outfield tune. He is joined by Eve, who is at her absolute sexiest, cooing seductively between Clef's verses before spitting some hip hop fire of her own. Pure hotness. Five stars.

5.) Ziggy Marley offers a predictably mellow and rootsy cover of The Cars classic "Drive". It works. Four stars.

6.) Less appealing is Will.I.Am and Fergies rendition of Spandau Ballet's "True". This song is proof that the same new wave/hip hop/dancehall blend formula that was so successful for Wyclef and Eve two tracks ago can turn to garbage in the wrong hands. Two stars.

7.) Elan Atias sounds like the lead singer of every Bob Marley cruise ship cover band you've ever heard on this rendition of Bryan Ferry's "Slave to Love". The coolest thing about this track is that Gwen Stefani chimes in on the backing vocals. Three stars.

8.) The terms "reggae-inspired", "80s mainstays", and "British" are equally applicable to UB40 and The Police, so when the former cover the latter's "Every Breath You Take", it's no surprise that it turns out well. Four stars.

9.) Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath sounds like he's just singing for a paycheck as he works his way through a blaise cover of The Psychedelic Furs' "The Ghost in You". You have to listen really hard to catch any reggae flavor at all on this one. It sounds like it was recorded exclusively for use in your local dentist's office. Two stars.

10.) Dryden Mitchell of Alien Ant Farm does a halfway decent job on a ska-inspired cover of The Cure's "Friday, I'm in Love", but it's definitely nothing special. Two and a half stars.

11.) Dusty Springfield's "Breakfast in Bed" was first given the rocksteady treatment by Alton and Hortense Ellis back in '69, and since then its become an reggae staple, covered by a at least a dozen dancehall and lover's rock artists including Lorna Bennett, Sheila Hylton, UB40 & Chrissie Hynde, Candy McKenzie, Carroll Thompson, and Donna Marie. Here, Nicole Scherzinger (still recording at this point under the pseudonym of "Nicole Kea") does a passable job. Three stars.

12.) Jason Mraz's version of the often-covered Modern English tune "I Melt With You" is slightly better than Mitchell and McGrath's offerings, but again, nothing to write home about. Three stars.

13.) The album unfortunately ends on a sour note: an unfunny little attempt at a comedic ditty by Adam Sandler with Drew Barrymore chuckling in the background. I guess this is supposed to remind those of us who bought the album for the music and not because of its association with the flick that we're listening to a soundtrack. No stars. Wish Sandler would've spared us his comedy routine and let us enjoy the music., but hey, that's what fast forward buttons are for, right?

So yeah, Johnny, if you've given this disc a spin and you're *still* not convinced that reggae and new wave are as sweet together as a "Reecy Cup", you'd better stick to Mars Bars!

I bought this soundtrack for one of my best friends, and she loved it, so that's all the approval I need to give this 5 stars. There is a very "island" sound to the entire CD, so if you don't like slightly hippy-ish reggae style music, beware. But otherwise, I think this will be a good purchase for fans of the movie.
  • Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2011
If you loved this moved as much as I did, there were two songs that stand out and take you back to the movie: "Wouldn't It Be Nice", by the Beach Boys and "Over the Rainbow", by Israel Kamakawiwoole. Neither of these titles is on the CD. Instead there is music that you've probably never heard before or want to hear again...with the exception of Adam Sandler's cute little ditty,"Forgetful Lucy"...the only reason I gave it even one star.

Vom Rest der CD war ich angenehm überrascht...teils bekannte Songs in chilliger Reggae Variante machen den Soundtrack zum Dauerbrenner für alle Lebenslagen.
