Product Description

Janet Jackson - Damita Jo - Cd

Amazon.com

On her eighth studio album, Damita Jo--the title lifted from her middle name--Janet Jackson teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again on what is perhaps the most feverish album in her two decade long career. Whether she's taking the listener on a torrid excursion in the four song island suite, or boasting of her sexual prowess on "Sexhibition's" word games lyrics, where she tells fans "relax, it's just sex," the singer tries hard--maybe too hard--to establish herself as a sexual avatar with portfolio. But in "Strawberry Bounce," she seems more like a pole dancer in stilettos than a social revolutionary, as she catalogs the way she plans to make her inamorato lose control, and she just sounds silly on "Moist," which extols the female orgasm. Instead, the best moments on the album are when Jackson comes off as saucy and winsome instead of a heavy breather, like on the down-tempo "Thinkin' Bout My Ex," her collaboration with Babyface, which seems lifted right out of her autobiography, and on the athletic Prince clone "Just A Little While." The title track is Jackson's own version of J-Lo's "Jenny On the Block," and she sounds just as insincere as Lopez when she tried to convince us that she was just an ordinary neighborhood diva. Instead, Janet’s much more persuasive when she joins up with hip-hop savant Kanye West on "My Baby," pairing her breathy, little girl vocals to his sharp, focused rap. Then and only then does Damita Jo sound like love can actually trump sex. --Jaan Uhelszki

While Most People Remember DAMITA JO as Janet's First Bona Fide Music Flop.. It Actually Sold More Than Both Her 2006 Album 20 Y.O. And 2008's Discipline. Damita Jo Remains Janet's LAST album To Sell Over A Million Albums. Sure It Went Platinum. But People Mostly Ignored This Project Because Of The Super Bowl Halftime Controversy. Although As A Major Fan Of Janet Jackson. I'm Appalled How Justin Timberlake Was Giver All Is Forgiven Card.. And Still Got To Be A Huge Superstar. While Janet Was Dead On Arrival. This Album Is Explicit For Good Reasons. The Explicit Version Is The Only Way To Get Warmth And Moist.. Just Like Later Pressings Of Her 2001 Multi Platinum Album All For YOU.. The Clean Version Removes Both Of Those Sexually Explicit Tracks. Retitles Sexhibition As Exhibition. Even Removing The Line Relax, It's Just Sex... The Explicit Version Is Also The Only Way To Get The Full Chorus Of Like You Don't Love Me.. Plus All The Sexually Moaning. This Album Is Best In It's Explicit Form.. Janet Jackson Remains The Only Jackson Not To Be Afraid Of Her Sexuality Unlike Her Brother Michael. May He Rest In Peace

Of course the album sales didn't do so good (hint: the Superbowl) but any Janet fan knows that the CD is automatically going to have some sex jams and "baby-making" songs! In my opinion, this is one of the most underrated albums; there are so many great songs that the music critics overlooked due to the unfortunate incident that occured at the SB. There's only two songs that I do not deem iPod worthy; other than that, the album is great! Another great thing: with this edition, you get two bonus tracks! Here's the tracklist:
1. Looking For Love - Janet's usual interlude to kick off the album. The music is very nice as Janet speaks about looking for love.
2. Damita Jo - an okay track, but definitely not the best! Surrounded by hip-hop beats and old skool samples, Janet sings about her alter-ego, Damita Jo!
3. Sexhibition - a song with a sexy swagger! Of course, we all know what Janet's talking about! It has a nice hip-hop beat with a hint of African flavor.
4. Strawberry Bouce - very sexy song as Janet sings about a striptease! The song samples Jay-Z's Can I Get A... and has a nice bouncy beat!
5. My Baby - I couldn't get into this although many Janet fans love this song - it looks like I'm excluded from this list! It's a mid-tempo song with Kanye West rapping after the second chorus. I usually skip this - not iPod worthy.
6. The Islands - an interlude with Janet discussing what she loves about her favorite island.
7. Spending Time With You - a nice mid-tempo jam very reminiscent of Twenty Foreplay. Definitely iPod worthy
8. The Magic Hour - another interlude
9. Island Life - an okay song. I had to get used to it but I deem it iPod worthy.
10. All Nite (Don't Stop) - three words: This is sick!! An uptempo urban dance jam with a hypnotic beat!

After giving this album a second chance, I realized that the album is
not really all that bad as I thought. Yes, the songs are full blown
about lust and sex, but can be sensual in a good way. It's Janet playing
up her own persona as this sex freak named Damita Jo. Think Madonna as
Mistress Dita. At times, it can feel like reading a Zane book. It does
feel like a sequel to All For You, but there are no fierce tracks like
Trust A Try or Son of A Gun. The only songs I used to like were: All
Nite (Don't Stop), I Want You (only thing close to classic Janet),
Sexhibition, and Strawberry Bounce. My opinions have changed and
expanded. what makes this album different from her previous ones is that
there is no groundbreaking beats and theme, but it's a decent, r&b album
with a sensual atmosphere. I would still place All For You, 20 Y.O. and
Discipline higher, though. For someone is a newcomer to Janet's music, I
would highly recommend Rhythm Nation, janet., or Control first before
getting into this album. This album only displays the lustful, flirty
Janet not the same fierce Janet we grew up listening to Nasty or What
Have You Done For Me Lately?. It just seems like Janet gets hornier and
hornier and hornier on each album, lol. Rhythm Nation, Control, janet.,
and The Velvet Rope were the 'theme' albums while All For You, Damita
Jo, 20 Y.O., and Discipline are the "sex-kitten" albums.

1. Damita Jo (5/5)-a song where explains the other side of "Janet". The
one who do movies, dance, and her "man". I love the old-school, retro
R&b sound.

2. Sexhibition (4.5/5)-She replaces words with "sex" before it in a very
flirty way. Good one, Janet.e.g.

I do not know what happened to the nearly 1000 other reviews, but here is my take on the album. Damita Jo is a really good album. Janet's albums always reflect her mood -- Control was a story of rebellion and growing up; Rhythm Nation was about politics and edgy dance tracks; Janet was about sensuality; Velvet Rope was about dealing with heartache and suffering; and All for You was about rebounding from this pain. Damita Jo's theme is one of love, sexuality, and serenity. There are several standout tracks on the album. My favorites are:
R & B Junkie -- VERY HOT, DANCY, OLD SKOOL TUNE
Slolove -- disco flavor, definite summer tune
All Nite/Don't Stop -- a club tune
Spending Time With You -- very romantic
Island Life -- peaceful, unwinding by the beach
I Want You -- retro r and b tune, excellent performance
Warmth -- Janet's most daring sex song ever. If you cannot stomach sexuality -- simply skip it, or buy the edited version.
Like YOu Don't Love Me -- an intense r/b song, with a funny, yet relevant, message (how to keep the "spark" in a relationship)
Thinking Bout My Ex -- not a standout, but a nicely delivered ballad
Damita JO -- a very catchy "personal" story - an introduction to Janet's alter ego, has words like "do you want me just for what you see? do you think that i'm the person you watch on tv?"
My Baby is a cute tribute to Janet's current partner, though I found the inclusion of "hot rapper of the moment" Kanye West a bit uncecessary (geared toward sales?)
I do not really care for most of the other "songs" -- many of which are really chatty interludes. Strawberry Bounce is targeting a teenage audience; the song lacks substance. Sexploration is growing on me, but it, like Straw. Bounce, is a teenybopper song.
