Depending on your sense of humor, William Hung's 15 minutes of fame on one 2004 episode of American Idol were either a joke or the high point of the show's season. Tone-deaf, karaoke-trained, and a far cry from the series' polished and trendy wannabe pop stars, Hung was booted halfway through his classic cover of Ricky Martin's "She Bangs." Inspiration, his first (and possibly last) CD, gives his legion of fans a chance to hear him in his entirety. Basically, it's Hung with karaoke background music, warbling through classics such as "Hotel California," "Rocket Man," and "Y.M.C.A." A few "inspirational thought" tracks are interspersed between the songs, giving you insight into the UC Berkeley student's self-confidence and enthusiasm. A bonus DVD even contains new footage and interviews of Hung in action. There are plenty of classic, imaginative novelty records out there--consider the Shaggs, Lucia Pamela, and Mrs. Miller--but this isn't one of them. Hung's backing music is too bland and, after a few tracks, the joke wears a little thin. But if you must hear more of this unlikely American Idol, here's your chance. --Jason Verlinde

William Hung is a pretty awful singer, but his attitude and enthusiasm for music are great to see. Actually, perhaps the best feature of this CD is not the music, but the included bonus DVD which contains a documentary-style feature where a camera crew follows William Hung around the UC Berkeley campus and interviews fellow students. It's interesting to hear what other people think about him, and to see what William used to do on a day-to-day basis, shortly after he became "famous".
If you're interested in finding out more about the phenomenon known as William Hung, buy this CD! You won't be disappointed!
1 - Inspirational Thoughts - Hung's sincere thanks for buying his cd
2 - She Bangs - awesome warped casio - you've all heard this one before but i mean CHECK OUT THE WARPED CASIO!!
3 - Bailamos - almost cluby -almost tripy - almost through the looking glass - compelling
4 - Inspirational Thoughts - Now that the thankyous are taken care of, Hung gets down to business
5 - I Believe I can Fly - it grows on you. seriously. you can FEEL it growing by the third hit of the chorus. truely creepy. Almost beatles-eque; reminds me of the warped singing in "Do It In The Road" but with out any hillbilly acompanyments to compliment the warbles.. the end is .. excruciating.
6 - Hotel California - Even better than the Moog Cookbook's version! Hung's echoing, strained and geeked out bardic stylings breath new life into a tired old song. Mercedes Pens!
7 - Can you feel the love tonight - If Winnie the Pooh and Piglet had a love child, it would be William Hung. And it would totally sing this song (exactly this way).
8 - Two Worlds - indeed.. Not as good as i'd have liked.
9 - Inspirational Thoughts - you can tell he's dead serious and it makes it that much better :)
10 - Rocket Man - way better than Kirk's version. its actually listenable..
11 - Free - techno hung. and a nice example of his slipery voice (which works so well with synthetic sounds like techno)
12 - Circle of Life - sucks. It didn't move me the way i expected.. (Mr Hankey kind of set the mark pretty high tho after his Circle Of Poo masterpiece..)
13 - Inspirational Thoughts- His last words totally sum up why he is so cool
14 - YMCA - brilliant. fun. wierd - defiantely Hung. i heard a snippet of this one on the radio and its why i LITTERALLY ran out and bought the cd.
15 - Shake your bon-bon - Oh my god - oh man - This is awesome - Oh MAN. I will seriously be playing this one a lot. Its all grindy and sexy and he is just such a strange and PERFECT inclusion - his voice/style of singing - - i mean, if it were remixed by someone good - bring the tempo down, lower the notes - and you've got a full on freak club song - the kind of stuff the dj puts on at 2:30 when everyone's completely out of their minds..
potential for remixes asside, this is my favorite track on the disc.
worth every penny - and i haven't even seen the BONUS DVD YET..
William Hung's earnest exposure of his limitations is beautiful to hear and is guaranteed to make you smile and laugh with him. Rocket Man and Hotel California will be in my head the rest of my days, but all of the tracks are a lot of fun. I cannot quit singing to myself in his unique style. The inspirational clips should be an entire album, as they are genuine and real in a business full of phonies and plastic surgeries and publicists.
Buy this album and strike a blow against the plastic, the fake, the "machine" of the music industry. I bought 3 so I could give them to friends as gifts. They love it and nothing will be more enjoyed. Hung Forever!
