And when she meets Cristal (Gina Gershon), Vegas'reigning showgirl, Nomi wants everything she hasincluding her boyfriend (Kyle MacLachlan). And as Nomi dives deeper into the world she so desperately desires, a rivalry between the two women heatsup. The battle for the spotlight becomes so fiercely competitive that it drives Nomi to desperate lengthsand devious heightsfor fame in Sin City.
Additional Features
The primary supplemental feature on the Showgirls VIP limited-edition DVD is a commentary track by David Schmader, who gained fame for hosting an "annotated" version of the movie (think Mystery Science Theater 3000). The track is subtitled "The Greatest Movie Ever Made," and Schmader explains himself thus: "Showgirls triumphs in that every single person involved in the making of the film, from the writers, actors, gaffers, every single one of them is making the worst possible decision at every possible time, and it's this incredible density of failure that makes Showgirls sublime." (He make an exception for Gina Gershon.) He wittily discusses the recurring "chips 'n' nails" motif and what Nomie's dancing reminds him of. Also included are behind-the-scenes footage, a pop-up trivia track, and some real-life showgirls offering tips on how to perform a lap dance and their take on the movie's lapdance scene. The oversized box is filled out with a variety of themed trinkets: two shot glasses, playing cards, a pin-the-pasties game, and photo cards with instructions for party games. It's like a bachelor party in a box. --David Horiuchi

I've seen it numerous times. It wasn't a big hit when it hit the big screen. When it went to DVD, it became a "cult" classic. You know sometimes the reviews on movies make me laugh, and this by far was no exception to that. I seen words like, trashy, garbage, smut, waste of money, horrible acting, bad plot, etc....etc....
To that I simply respond with this: If you paid for it for the T & A, you got your money's worth. If you watched it because to see Elizabeth Berkley, you got your money's worth. I mean it's not like she was an actress of some big name movies, films that require excellent acting skills, successful films or a long list of filmography. I can only think of one TV show ( one movie, this movie ) I ever saw her in. Saved by the Bell. Hell had she not have done this movie she'd be remembered even less, so to say her doing the movie ruined her career, is incorrect, even if she said it herself. These days most of the cast from Saved by the Bell are known/remembered for reasons of controversy, and Berkley is no exception to that, due to her choice in deciding to be in this movie. Anyway....
Showgirls is what it is. If you expected it to be a really great movie with a great cast and excellent acting, sure, you likely did not like it. I mean Gina Gershon was in it, but other than her and Berkley I did not see anyone else's face I knew. To my knowledge, none of the cast went on to really becoming a well known actress or actor, with the exception of Gershon, but I think most knew of her before they watched Showgirls. The fact is though it became one of MGM's top 20 all-time bestsellers despite it bombing at the box office. Now why would that be the case for?
the synopsis isn't even really necessary. It's one of those movies where you know what to expect from it. I'd call it campy, and it is, but I don't know if that sums it up right. I wouldn't call it comedic, although there are times that you'll find yourself watching certain scenes and the lines are so dumb it's laughable. I'd say at times it's certainly unrealistic, especially ( POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT ) the scenes like Nomi kicking Carver repeatedly, and the scenes where the same guy that picked Nomi up in the beginning picks her up at the end and doesn't know who she is because she had sunglasses on. Really?
But, if you're just looking for something to watch that you don't expect a lot from and you're smart enough to know what you're getting into, it's a good watch. It always entertained me, ever since it came out on DVD, and rented it at Blockbuster video. I like to call it a "Go to" movie. If you don't know what that means, well,.....
Whether you picked for the T & A, Elizabeth Berkley doing the opposite of what she did in Saved by the Bell, wanting to see her ( and the other women ) naked and dancing, like I said, you got your money's worth. If you're a prime member and didn't pay for it and hated it, all you lost was some time and surely you've spent your time doing worse things. If you see it for what it is, than you enjoyed it.
Like it or not, it is a classic, by my and several other people's definition of "classic." Get over it. The name of the movie is Showgirls, so you had to have known a little bit of what you were getting into. Compared to the sequel, ( which I don't recommend watching, I made that mistake ) it's a 5 star movie. I only knocked one star off because it takes a lot for me to throw out 5 stars, meaning perfection. It's not perfect. It is raunchy. It's trashy based on the subject matter, simply by title alone. A mother of a couple of kids and is a member of the PTA is certainly going to frown on it, unless she's a closet fan.
Bottom line: You see the title, who's in it, the synopsis is there and it's entertaining enough to keep your attention. The people giving it bad reviews are just....people who think that it's something comparable to the likes of box office smashes and it shouldn't contain any smut. I mean,
You DID read the title, right?
SHOWGIRLS IS THE HIGHEST-GROSSING NC-17 RATED FILM OF ALL TIME.
Though getting slapped with an NC-17 is usually a death knell at the box office, Showgirls was made with that rating in mind. Showgirls has a lifetime gross of $20,350,754, which is good enough for first place. Other NC-17-rated films in recent years such as Shame (2013), Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013), and Killer Joe (another film starring Gina Gershon, 2012), didn’t even come close to Showgirls’s gross. The film went on to earn more than $100 million on home video.
With its 25th anniversary looming, the NC-17 cult classic “Showgirls” is having a moment. Skinned alive by critics upon its release, the 1995 movie about the naked ambition of Sin City dancer Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley) has bounced back to inspire two new documentaries and an art exhibit.
“‘Showgirls’ is one of the only movies that gets Vegas right,” Viviana Olen, Vegas native and co-curator of “Goddess: The Exhibit,” tells The Post of the infamous strip flick.
Only Showgirls, nearly two decades on, has proven to be a very successful business venture, indeed. Elizabeth Berkley, who took on the starring role of Nomi Malone, was tipped to earn a Sharon Stone-esque career boost off the back of the movie. Instead, her movie hit at the time proved to be The First Wives Club. But who talks about that anymore? Showgirls, however, has endured. Just two weeks ago, Berkley took to her Instagram page to reveal she'd attended a screening of the film at the Hollywood Forever Cometary.
She wrote that "all you amazing #showgirls fans have turned this film into the beloved cult film that it is. Years ago they said it was a bomb...who knew it would become the highest grossing dvd for MGM of all time?! Thank you for loving it the way you do....it was made with a spirit of fun - from the top of my bleached blonde hair to the tip of my glittery toes."
Yet the cult of Showgirls isn't a new thing. In fact, it started to grow within months of the film's original run falling flat.
Within a year of the film's launch, The Washington Post was saying that the film had found a fresh lease of life "as a midnight cult flick." In an article dated April 22, 1996 - just seven months on from the film's debut
It should be noted that the dislike of Showgirls is not unanimous too. Adam Nayman, for one, has written a fascinatingly-argued book called It Doesn't Suck: Showgirls, where across 128 pages, he contends that the movie is a misunderstood masterpiece.

It's about a young woman who drifts into Las Vegas with dreams of being a dancer. She ends up being a stripper. However, her fortunes don't stay that way for long, as she's offered a role in a top Vegas casino's show... which involves taking her clothes off.
In case you've never heard of this film, it does involve a lot of female nudity. Now, this naturally attracted a lot of criticism of the film being sexist. And, in short, it is. However, isn't that the point? We're getting a look into an industry (whether it be the stripping industry, the showgirl industry, or even the film industry) which is heavily male-dominated. It's run by rich middle-aged men who get to decide which young 18-21 year old females get the parts. Of course there's going to be a heavy element of sexism and quite a fair share of sleaze involved.
I won't try to defend Showgirls and say things like `the nudity empowers the women,' because that would probably be untrue (and rather pretentious). But I will say that the nudity is at least valid. Making a film without nudity about a subject involving strippers and erotic dancers would be like making a film about the Second World War without soldiers.
It's all pretty cheesy stuff. I don't know whether that was the film-makers' intentions when they made it, but that's the end result. Everything is very dramatic. The lead characters dances overly-dramatically, walks overly-dramatically and, if you look closely, even eats a hamburger overly-dramatically. It's kind of like the acting quality you'd expect from an afternoon soap (but with more nudity, obviously).
However, if there's one redeeming feature that can genuinely be talked about, it's Gina Gershon, who plays the femme fatale `Cristal Connors.' She seems to revel in flitting between evil and seductively charming and is a joy to watch when it comes to baddies.
I don't think anyone should recommend Showgirls to anyone, without knowing what sort of films they're into. You'll either love it or throw a brick at the TV. Best to just tell people you hate it until you meet up with them in some underground car park with the rest of the Showgirls fans. Remember, the first rule about liking Showgirls is that you DO NOT admit to liking Showgirls.
