Graffiti Bridge (DVD)

In a sequel of sorts to Purple Rain, the artist formerly known as Princestruggles musically with Morris Day for control of the nightclub thatthe two co-own in this dramatic musical fantasy. There is the power offaith--in oneself and in a higher power. There is the power of love. There is the never-ending struggle between good and bad. And there isthe power of music. Graffiti Bridge.

A sort of fairy-tale sequel to Prince's enormously successful Purple Rain, 1990's Graffiti Bridge finds his purple highness not only singing and acting, but writing and directing, too. His performance suffers on all fronts. The film isn't a disaster, but it's safe to predict completist fans will make up most of its viewers. In the earlier film, Prince (known as the Kid) was fighting for his place on stage. This time he's fighting to keep his club safe from the money-grubbing hands of his musical rival, the Time's Morris Day, now a nightclub mogul. Day embodies spiritual, sexual, and economic corruption, while the Kid stands for salvation through music and a more redemptive form of lust.

The graffiti bridge conceit--a metaphor for a place of rejuvenation and artistic inspiration--is intriguing. Unfortunately, the bridge itself is merely a prop in a Paisley Park soundstage. Where Purple Rain was a movie that set new standards for lensing musical performances, Graffiti Bridge feels like a music video masquerading as a movie. Lucky for us, Prince cast the honey-voiced poet and performer Ingrid Chavez as Aura, part muse and part angel to both Day and the Kid. Her beauty and charisma ignite every frame she graces. --Michael Mikesell

As movies go this is not really one of the best for plot. It's a bit cheesy, however if you adore Prince the way I adore him you will really enjoy this movie. It's like a musical video with a little story tossed in.
If you've seen Purple Rain the main characters in this film make a return in a club environment and of course they are still rivals. The talented artist alone make this a must see. I would also recommend the sound track!

Overall, My CD arrived in perfect shape with NO scratches and the cover is in perfect condition. I am super pleased to have this DVD in my collection to honor a man I have adored since at least 1984.

When the world demands the comfortable and familiar, a true artists has the backbone to create what's in their soul. Panned by so called fans and critics for not being a carbon copy of Purple Rain, this unique film illustrates why Prince is a one of a kind American original and genious. Beautifully choreographed, excellent music and loaded with symbolism that only those who are open are able to receive. When the world shouted scathing criticism, the Artist smiled and whispered, knowing that it was finished upon completion. Well done.

I don't understand people slamming Under the Cherry Moon for bad acting - this movie is kinda the pits. I know it's the supposed sequel to Purple Rain and that gets some people all hot and bothered, but it just wasn't great.
The plot line/theme, while a typical good vs. evil, is something I tend to enjoy, it was kind of hokey. The music didn't thrill me either except for maybe 2 songs (Round and Round and Tick Tick Bang).

It did have softer moments and I liked those. I'd also say that Prince was able to play up a slightly grown up version of The Kid from Purple Rain in this, and I think that merited 3 stars. Plus the costuming. Always going to win with Prince's clothes, that's just how it is. May His Royal Badness Rest in Purple O)-+>

I love Prince and wanted to at least like the film, but couldn't. Since I am a big fan of his, I gave it 2 stars for the music, but this as a pseudo "sequel" to Purple Rain??? NOT. However, with his passing though, I'm glad I can at least say I saw it.

Why did critics hate this so much? I thoroughly enjoyed his performance. Sure, he's no Denzel Washington -- except for Denzel, who is? -- but he's definitely worth watching and a good actor. Considering that most movies have seasoned directors, writers, actors, etc., Prince did most of this work himself and is pretty much self-taught; I think he did a great job.

From a production perspective, this film could have benefitted from collaboration with another director. But I adore Prince so much I don't care, I simply enjoy watching him, and appreciate his continual curiosity and drive to explore and innovate. This film is no exception, and it's beautiful in its own way when you really consider Prince's music and lyrics for the soundtrack.

Since the events of "Purple Rain", Prince has lost the ability to Rock to the point where he's thinking of shooting himself in the head...but instead, he whips out that white guitar and ROCKS the hell out of this movie! .....Uh...NO...that doesn't happen. Instead, he sings a slow, gospel song to induce suicide in as many viewers as possible. An extremely horrible movie which has nothing to do with "Purple Rain". Impossible to watch the whole way through. Torture from start to finish. Maybe it could be called "Purple Pain".

It was an okay movie, but it was plagued with audio problems where the narrative was hard to understand. It was interesting to compare the music of GB to Purple Rain. The music in Purple Rain was more rock and funk, GB was quite hip-hop. So, the music in GB was not as pleasing as it was in Purple Rain. The story was poorly written and hard to follow. But this was Prince's first and perhaps only writing and directing venture, so I can forgive him for being a beginning filmmaker. It's sad he didn't get a chance to do another film.
