To be honest, when this movie first came out, I didn't like it. I was a huge Prince fan, just based on his "Purple Rain" movie and music. "Under the Cherry Moon" is SO far removed from that, you almost wouldn't know they're both Prince. At the time, I wanted more of the Prince from Purple Rain, so I was disappointed when this film didn't provide that. I didn't watch it again for many, many years, but I have just rediscovered Prince so decided to buy this DVD for my collection (still thinking I don't really like the film).

What a surprise to find that now, after so many years later, I love this film! Now that I wasn't expecting Purple Rain Prince anymore, I could just enjoy Prince as he is in this particular film. Yes, he's over-the-top. Yes, his acting skills aren't superb. But he's entertaining!! He's funny! He's Prince, after all. I always liked the music from the album Parade, and now I find myself wishing the film captured more of him performing the music himself, rather than as a background soundtrack. Prince is just a natural in front of the camera, and the camera loves him, too.

The rest of the cast is enjoyable, too, especially Jerome as Prince's sidekick. I've never been a big fan of Kristen Scott Thomas, but I think she does a decent job here.

It might sound corny (well, this film is corny, anyway!), but I watched it once through with the English subtitles on, and it helped a lot in understanding a lot of the "street / slang" dialogue between Prince and Jerome.

On a final note, whenever I want a good chuckle, I just think of the scene from this movie where Prince is sitting in his car waiting for Mary to arrive, car stereo blaring, lip-synching to his own song...

Interesting what 30 years can do to one's perspective.

Even if he had not shuffled off this mortal coil minutes/days/years/millennia ago, I'd still be highly, HIGHLY entertained by "Under the Cherry Moon".

Which was NOT the case when I saw it in 86 (?). I was expecting another tour de force like Purple Rain but this was so different that I didn't even know what to think. And so I tossed it in a heap of 'really bad movies' and moved on.

It's closer to his real self, I think, than the brooding artist was in Purple Rain. His playful sense of humor (at himself and situations) is on high display (hence the large number of gifs that come from that movie) and the older I've gotten the more I appreciate that sense of humor.

What's fascinating to me, especially, is how he carries such different energies in one body (as we all do) and shows them fully when the time calls for it. Like, it's all there in him and he just pulls it out and shows it when that 'tool' is called for.

Rent this damn movie if you're at all interested in him. $2.99 on Amazon and a fun 90 minutes. (Jerome is hilarious in it, too.)

I LOVE this!!!! A lot of people are saying is not better than Purple Rain (Duh) it's not super to be. Prince was a very artistic man in music and poetry and even photography which was one of his hobbies. He asked specifically that it be in black and white toi show the classic old fashion feel. I love the parade era of Prince as I do with most of what he do. People don't want to see artist grow.once they find something they like, they want that all the time and when you give them something different they say "you fell off",or "its not as good as..." I love the growth of him and how he continually evolved in whatever he had done. That is a TRUE artist. They don't make em like that anymore. I am thankful for artist like him. So so thankful.

I have been looking for this in DVD form for a very long time. I'm so very glad that I found it. Every part of this DVD is very clear so I get to see my favorite scenes as if I am in the movies. I love every prince movie and this one is the best one that was an must have for me. It comes in a neatly packaged DVD case and it has an depiction of what the DVD is about on the back. I watched this movie first when I was just an young girl and now I can watch it with my hubby. He didn't believe me when I asked him to find it for me so I went and looked for it my self after we got married. I plan on looking for the rest now that "The Beautiful One" has left us this past Thursday. I got this product for my own interest and this is my opinion of the DVD and I also got this at a great price, your opinion may differ.

Under the Cherry Moon was perfectly Prince and the best way for me to celebrate Prince's untimely passing. The movie is campy and silly and very late 80's early 90's Art Deco style. The plot is less than perfect and sometimes over the top but it's hard not to fall for the characters. As expected Prince is pure seduction in this film. Would recommend.

I've been a long time lover of Prince, but since I wasn't even born when this film was made, I had never seen it. Purple Rain always gets all the love when it comes to television, so it's inevitable that I had seen it before. But I've never even seen Under the Cherry Moon on tv, period. For the life of me, I can't figure out why, because to me, it's far more likable than Purple Rain.

I've been in mourning since Prince's passing back in April and even though I've always considered myself a follower, I recently find myself re-familiarizing myself with all of his work since his death. Especially with more access to it than I had when I was younger. For that reason, I was compelled to buy this and watch it just so that I can say I saw it. Also, my mom is a huge Prince-head and she urged me to watch it as well. She also thinks it's the better movie. She's right, I enjoyed it so much more than Purple Rain. It's far more light-hearted (up until the end) and even though Purple Rain has a little humor, Under the Cherry Moon is downright hilarious. The chemistry between he and Jerome Benton was just....fluid. It worked. It shows on screen that they truly were real friends. And it's funny how Prince is portrayed in the media as this super serious weird guy, but I'm telling you. Watch this and your entire opinion of him will change. Dare I say, he's 'silly' in it? Haha. I feel like I was watching who he really was. A sweet, cocky, and playful type of guy just loving, living, and enjoying life. I always considered him my favorite musician and the day he died, I just felt like there was this big hole in the musical part of my heart (and that's a very big part. I LOVE music). Seeing this film made me smile and be able to just enjoy watching Prince do what he did best.
