This Netbook seems to be way under-rated by others. I love this tiny netbook. Everything worked great for me right out of the box. Even the webcam, wireless, and wired network all worked great with out any additional setup. I highly recommend this little netbook to anyone that is always on the run or anyone that just needs something simple that "just works", and does not have anything Microsoft on it to ruin you day :) I played with some of the other netbooks and this definately tops my list for best netbook.

Sylvania G Meso exceeds netbook expectations

What I like most about the G Meso is the Ubuntu Remix, superb screen quality, 80gb hard drive and 3-hour battery life. It's quiet, no fan noise and doesn't get hot. It's extremely light weight and small enough to carry in a briefcase or small backpack. The standard 1gb of RAM is more than enough to drive Ubuntu Remix effortlessly. This netbook seems very sturdy and well built. I particularly like that the screen is raised up from the keyboard due to the placement of the speakers underneath. With a small screen size this is a real plus when compared to other make netbooks. However the speakers sound horrible, but I use earphones anyway so this is not too much of an issue for me. Besides, I think speakers on most every laptop that I have heard sound substandard. Size matters. I also like the finger pad functionality better than other netbooks I've used, which is especially important considering its size.

The tradeoff with the smallness of the G Meso is the keyboard. It takes some getting used to as much as I would expect for any netbook. That being said, I don't intend to use a it to write a novel.

What I don't like about the G Meso has more to do with my choice of color than anything. I purchased the black model that has a glossy surface, which is a real dust and fingerprint magnet. I have also found that the wifi function usually works well but can be a bit finiky at times trying to pick up a known access point.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the G Meso and it works quite well for the purpose intended. I knew what I was getting into when buying a netbook, so I'm not disappointed with the compromises. I am a desktop Ubuntu user so the Remix was a plus for me. Amazon's pass through provider was J&R, who shipped promptly. My only complaint with them is that the G Meso I received looked previously used. The box had obviously been opened and the cellophane screen and cover protectant had been removed and replaced showing fingerprints and non-factory positioning. It works properly so I didn't call them to complain. Nonetheless, I should have been offered some type of an "open box" discount or the listing should have mentioned it was previously purchased and returned. I guess that's a tradeoff with an internet purchase so let the buyer beware.

Sadly Disappointed

After opening the box, my first impression was that it was a very nicely packaged unit with slim lines and weighed hardly anything at all. The keyboard was small, but I expected that from a little netbook. After awhile I got used to the size and being without a left shift key. I was excited to try out the Ubuntu Remix that I heard so much about. After booting up, I had no trouble navigating around but found that after about an hour of getting to know this netbook, it just froze up. After rebooting, it would work for another 15 minutes then freeze up again. Attempting to connect to my wireless router proved to be a challenge. It constantly dropped the signal and everytime I closed and came back to use the internet, I had to re-install it to the wireless. There were no instructions other than a brief pamphlet guiding you through the quick start set-up which was no help at all. When going to the Ubuntu site on my PC, I felt at a loss as the procedures for trouble shooting and setting up was beyond my technical abilities and comprehension.

After many attempts it finally did work fine until 2 weeks later when I took it on a business trip (the reason why it was purchased in the first place). After initially connecting to my hotel wi-fi, I had the same problem of the dropped connections and re-installing every time I turned the computer back on. Freezing as soon as I logged on and error messages got me so frustrated that I took it down to the neighborhood electronic superstore for technical help. Unfortunately, after the techician's attempts at trouble shooting it, he found that it was the Ubuntu OS that was causing the problem. Not being too techinically literate and not having much time since I was late for my meeting, I could not understand the problem so I gave it up for loss. I decided to take a quick look around the store and see what they had to offer, being that I needed a computer desperately. I hurriedly purchased another well-known brand with the choice of Ubuntu or Windows XP. Needless to say, I purchased the familiar XP which to this date has given me no problems after almost a month.

Granted, Ubuntu Remix may be a great system for some but I'm sorry that it did not work for me. I was very excited to be able to change over from windows because of all the good reviews that I've read and would have loved for it to work out. I've decided to keep the little Sylvania and install the Windows XP on it for my niece.
