Was looking for this movie and was so happy to find it! Loved the whole concept and Bill Murray I’d a riot with RZA and GZA!!!

The conversations that go on over cigarettes and coffee. The movie certainly wasn’t what I expected. Black and white lends an aura of nostalgia. Campy, quirky and off-beat. Surprise appearances by well known actors and personalities. I had fun trying to guess who was who. The skit by Gza, Rza and Bill Murray were my favorite, but they’re all amazing. I love it and recommend it

The movie is almost an impossible project... The set is made of one table, a couple of chairs, few cups of coffee and no more than 10-15 square feet of space around them. The camera is usually fixed and the picture is black and white. Jim Jarmusch uses these self-imposed limitations (reminiscent of Danish Dogma) only to prove what we usually forget: beauty is most of the times in details and in their good measure and there is much suspense in each gesture. The actors are absolutely formidable. The humor is pervasive but minimalist allowing the epilogue to take place on Mahler's music. One brief remark on the ethnographical value that is present in every movie made by JJ. The movie functions very well as a display of his vast collection of impressions and travel notes: jukebokes, cofee mugs, tables, table clothes (very meticulously different from one scene to another), lipsticks, waiter's caps, etc. It reminds us of Nabokov's passion for collecting buterflies. How does Jarmusch catch his luna moths?

This film consists of several short segments, consisting of two main characters sitting at a table, drinking coffee (tea, in two segments) and most of them smoking cigarettes. There are few connections between the conversations from one segment to the others, aside from pointing-out that cigarettes and coffee aren't a good lunch, a couple of mentions of inventor Nicolas Tesla and coffee popsicles.
I will admit that this film isn't for everyone and also that I had a hard time writing this review. But, this film is entertaining for people willing to have an open mind about films that go outside the form most movies take. There are some very funny parts in "Coffee and Cigarettes" which had me laughing out loud and other parts where I could feel the discomfort of one character in their segment where the conversation seemed to touch a raw nerve in their companion or themselves. That uncomfortable moment occurs in many real life conversations where we don't know what to say next, if anything, to avoid hurting the other person's feelings.
This film has no definite beginning or ending and there is little in each segment to connect it with the others beyond the coffee (or tea) and cigarettes they are consuming.
Nevertheless, I liked the film and I recommend it to people who like to watch films that go outside the norm.

I really enjoyed the movie. It was interesting the change in how people acted over time. I also loved how later in the movie, the scenes started connecting together with references to previous scenes. For example, the Tesla coil and the caffeine popsicles were referenced later in the movie after the ideas were first brought up. This movie is definitely not for everyone. Especially people who are used to seeing movies with a definite plot and a ton of action packed into it.

Another Jarmush classic. Gorgeous film, and the scene with Tom Waits and Iggy Pop is one I can watch over and over. As cigarette smokers are now considered utter pariahs in many circles, one doesn't see people interacting and bonding over coffee and smokes in public as we did as little as 10 years ago. It all makes this movie comfort food in addition to a genius's perspective and observations on your average oddball's day out at the cafe.

This is a series of short black and white films all containing coffee and ciggarettes. As in most Jarmush films it has an ultra cool cast, a hip soundtrack, a very dry sense of humour and... slow...pace....ing. Most disapointing is the Iggy Pop/Tom Waits segment which starts off the movie. I had high expectations for this segment but Iggy plays this guy with absolutely no backbone who is totally pushed around by Tom Waits. I guess the joke here is that they are playing opposite personalities to their normal type, but the joke goes on way too long. So does the segment made up entirely of one man asking the other if something is wrong and the other man keeps saying no. I mean how long do you want to watch THAT conversation?
Has Jim ever liked the Hollywood scene? Probably not but the hollywood piece here, with Steve Coogan, has a very unoriginal plot about the shallowness and career driven nature of Hollywood social interactions. Hmmm not very big news.
There are two totally sublime pieces in the box. One has Kate Blanchet playing two different characters at once and it is just absolutely terrific to watch. The other is the last piece set to an etherial and meloncolly song by Mahler - "Ich Bin der Welt Abhanden Gekommen" Two aged men drift in dreams and nostalga during their coffee break. Very moving and magical.
Those two pieces will be worth the price of the dvd (or whatever) especially if you don't have to sit through the whole thing in a movie theatre. (which at one point in my life I did)

Excellent Film
Reviewed in France on September 1, 2013
