Product Description

When Sam (Culkin) continually gets picked on by the school bully, he and his protective older brother decide to teach the bully a lesson he will never forget. Together, they come up with a plan that involves inviting the bully on a special river trip for his birthday where they will make sure he is humiliated for all to see. Deciding that he no longer wants to go through with the plan, Sam tries to call it off but it's too late and he must live with the resulting consequences.

Deliverance goes to high school in this grim, stripped-down fable of a prank gone bad. Friends decide to teach a lesson to a teenage bully by inviting him on a canoeing trip where they will humiliate him once and for all. The prank turns seriously sour, and the kids must deal with the consequences. Writer-director Jacob Aaron Estes takes a somber look at these lives, although his low-key approach makes the central tragedy seem melodramatic when it happens. The film isn't quite new enough to be truly revelatory, but Estes neatly avoids a River's Edge rehash by allowing his characters more than dead-eyed anomie. The actors hit their notes with precision, especially Rory Culkin (another of the Culkin family, with Macaulay and Kieran), Ryan Kelley, and Scott Mechlowicz. This is the kind of movie that may be slightly familiar to older audiences, but could easily be a home-video cult item with younger viewers. --Robert Horton

The cast has perfect chemistry. You don't have to use the mind of a child to understand the train of thought each character uses throughout the film. The piece of time during which you are torn from your world and sucked into theirs, nothing is unfamiliar. Reasons, spoken and silent, come across loud and clear. Adults could take the place of Mean Creek's characters and have the same situations to face. Decisions made as a child can have as lasting results as those made by adults. I love the way this film is presented, including the acting, writing, directing, cinematography and production. Find out as little as possible about this film beforehand. Doing so adds suspense to the mix.

We all grow up and either fall victim or engage in a prank(s). It's what kids do to discover their limits and then they experience the pain involved when a prank goes wrong or played upon them. Mean Creek is a story much like the bullies we hear about in the news. Except these are not ordinary bullies, just simple kids trying to assert their machismo and gain a few notches of respect...that is until things take an unexpected turn. How they negotiate and learn more about each other as they conjure up reasons to either come clean or hide their ill conceived plan is fascinating and so realistic. It had a tinge of sequel but sequels tend to take from the original idea. Excellent movie, well acted, and the cinematragraphy a plus.

I Bought this movie on DVD some years ago. At the time the only thing I knew about the film was what at on the box. It took me over and hour of reading to decide if I wanted to but the movie or not. I love this movie. It is a good movie about a bully who was so bad that kids wanted to treat him as they were being treated then it turned out he was not that bad of a guy. But in the end mistakes happen. I love this movie. They were able to shoot at a time when the weather was perfect and it shows in the movie. This movie will make you feel happy and times and also feel sad at times and also feel pain at time. If there is any movie to see it is this one.

I rank it up there with stand by me.

This movie is incredibly interesting. It has so many aspects that we could talk about it for hours.

The young actors are excellent, they're all a group and each character has a specific role to play in it and the movie wouldn't have been that good it one of them had been missing. Their looks are disturbing too, we can read so many things in it(anger, unsecurity, shame); they may be young actors but they definitely have averything a great actor is supposed to have.

Also, even though the mood of the movie isn't quite that suspensful, it sure is tense.

From the very beginning we already can feel the movie, we feel like we're a witness of what is gonna happen and consequently we feel as guilty as the characters. We feel like we "can't be forgiven" for what has just happened.(You'll see !)

The soundtrack, the amateur-looking aspect and the camera moves are all important as well and they greatly contributed to make this movie what it is, without taking credits off the actors.

So I more than advise you to buy this DVD because this movie is a real lesson of otherness and it shows us that everything doesn't always goes according to the plan and how fate can be so powerful and unsympathetic.

I've always loved this movie. It's a little slow but it's very sad and realistically a real thing that happens. It's about a bully that basically has no friends because everyone is scared of him and he beats up another kid in school. The kid's older brother and 2 friends decide to get him back by tricking him and pranking him but it's a prank that goes wrong. It's sad because the bully was so happy thinking he had friends when that's really all he wanted.

Inevitably compared with Rob Reiner's 1986 classic "Stand By Me", Jacob Aaron Estes' "Mean Creek" stands up well to the comparison.

Essentially, it is a simple story of young teenager Sam (Rory Culkin) whose older brother and friends plot revenge on George, a school bully (Josh Peck). Revenge is to take the form of a river trip where George is to be stripped and abandoned to find his own way home . . . but George, at close quarters, turns out to be rather different, if not actually likeable. Things go horribly wrong and the kids are left to deal with far more than bullying.

Like "Stand By Me", this film has brought together a group of young actors whose performances are seamless. Each character is individual and utterly believable.

Estes tells a moral tale without, even for a moment, becoming maudlin or sentimental. Beautifully filmed in an exquisite setting, it is a disturbing movie which makes its viewers re-examine their own adolescent behaviour.

Absolutely excellent film. From the emotions and character building to the morals and lessons, it's all around an extremely impressive low-budget flick.

This is my all time favorite movie! I love how in depth this movie is with how it makes you feel towards every character. I was blown away with how this movie played out and I still am today. I love Rory Culkin and the other cast is amazing in it too. It a movie that makes you wonder what you would do in a situation like that and how scared you would be in it.
