Product Description

Bad Day at Black Rock (DVD)

Folks in Black Rock have their own way of welcoming mysterious, one-armed stranger John J. Macreedy. He’s welcome to leave. Or they’ll make sure he leaves in a pine box. Two-time Academy Award® winner* Spencer Tracy (a 1955 Best Actor Oscar® nominee for this film) plays World War II veteran Macreedy, who keeps his own counsel about why he’s come to Black Rock and who keeps his wits about him when confronted with threats and violence. Director John Sturges (The Great Escape) ramps up the tension while revealing Macreedy’s mission and the town’s grim secret. Robert Ryan, Walter Brennan, Ernest Borgnine and Lee Marvin are among the town’s thugs and lap dogs. “I’m half horse, half alligator,” one says. They’ll find Macreedy is even tougher stuff.

I saw this on a steaming website awhile ago an had to have it

This is unambiguously among my top five favorite movies of all time. Tracy, Brennan, Jagger and Francis are all wonderful (I actually think that this is Tracy's best performance, and that's saying something), and Borgnine and Marvin are wonderfully loathsome -- delivering performances that cause me to loathe their thuggish characters to this day. Of course, the real villain of the piece is the small-town godfather, Reno (exquisitely well-played, with palpable-but-nuanced malignancy, by Robert Ryan) -- who I'm convinced that, were he alive in today's world (Reno, not Ryan), would be flourishing extravagantly as a hedge-fund manager. The argument is not untenable that this simple drama of good, evil, and the complicity of the well-intentioned but weak-willed (who can still sometimes be stirred to morality, when pushed to the wall -- or against the Street of the Wall) is as apt a metaphor for today's society as it was for the era of McCarthyism.

So why haven't I accorded it five stars (whereas I think the movie, itself, may deserve six)? In a word, "resolution." Not the resolution of the characters (which is, in the case of Tracy's John Macreedy, irrefragable) -- but the resolution of the print, as available on my kindle, whether streamed or downloaded on the "highest-quality" setting. 83 minutes that can't be made to occupy more than 330MB. It may the best available compatible for playing on the HD 10, but it's just blurry, and I don't recall its having been that way when I purchased it initially -- though, to be fair, it may have played better on a smaller screen. But as it plays currently, and on this device, it's just... extremely disappointing.

This is, undoubtedly, one of the fastest movies, at 81 minutes, that you will watch. The drama and action are quick paced, with a one-armed John J. Macreedy (Spencer Tracy) squaring off against murderer Reno Smith (Robert Ryan) and his two henchmen Hector (Lee Marvin) and Coley (Ernest Borgnine) in the wide spot in the road known as Black Rock. Macreedy has plenty of, in the words of Hector, "iron in his blood", as he searches for Japanese farmer Komoko, who is the father of the soldier who died trying to save Macreedy's life in Italy during World War II, at his home at Adobe Flat, only to learn that he is dead as well. You know after Macreedy has run-ins with Hector and Pete (John Ericson) the hotel clerk, as well as several lengthy discussions with Smith, that he smells a rat. To cover up the murder of Komoko, Smith resorts to raw intimidation. The scene at the railroad crossing is one of the best parts of the movie, as the conspirators lay down their plans for Macreedy. Robert Ryan delivers some of the fastest and most sarcastic lines you will ever hear, as he gives his thugs their marching orders. Also, his reading of the riot act to Tim Horn the Sheriff (Dean Jagger) is searing. He is never at a loss of stinging comments in this movie. After Coley tries to run Macreedy off the road in the desert, the next step is physical violence. Coley attempts to pick a fight with Macreedy in the town diner, only to receive a one minute clinic in martial arts from the one-armed Macreedy. The final showdown at night in the desert is a dramatic scene, with the resourceful Macreedy more than a match for the rifle-firing Smith. Some of the most beautiful scenery of the California desert and mountains is on display throughout the entire movie, and the menacing Southern Pacific streamlined passenger train that delivers Macreedy to Black Rock seems as if it is ready to come through your television. Just an excellent movie with a lot of excellent performances, particularly from Spencer Tracy, Robert Ryan, and Ernest Borgnine.

Classic western that stars Spencer Tracy. I predict you will love this film and probably watch it more than once.

Spencer Tracy never made a bad film! This movie is haunting and scary and sad. Set in the dryist, lonelyist, and most un- inhabitable part of the desert, WWII in the 1950s. Placed there Except for rednecks! Inside of the only building left; dirty and dusty and without human warmth, even given the 10 humans who reside; it seems their only choice . The Once-a-week train arrives and departs from Hell, the WW2 Jeep in between provides transportation. Communication is sparse and important amongst folks gathered in that Brown ugly room. Stacy's character is commissioned if only to this God forsaken place to deliver a medal of honor to a Japanese American hero. One man buried under a hump of sand not so long ago, in this one place, alone. No one gave a damn. The quiet debate between those folks gathered at the lonely clanky tables even without whiskey, never fine-tunes eloquence or conversation to make right the mission of Spencer. His humanity, and intelligence is, achieved by this man with no gun, one arm and true grit. I get this movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars A unique masterpiece, in my opinion John Sturges' best film
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 16, 2025
Bad Day At Blackrock - the film merges film noir with the western. It has a cast dominated by award-winning actors including Spencer Tracy as one-armed veteran with judo skills. Robert Ryan, Ernest Borgnine and Lee Marvin play local yahoos who try and needle a new arrival. The quality of the cast, the setting in the California high desert, a ramshackle western town and the Southern Pacific streamliner train - create an amazing film. Just ten years after the end of the second world war, Bad Day at Blackrock deals with racism against Asians. In my mind, it is John Sturges best film, but always overshadowed by his later works Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape.

5.0 out of 5 stars High Noon - with a difference
Reviewed in Germany on January 11, 2020
    Überhaupt: k e i n happy-end, k e i n love-interest, keine ROTE GEFAHR und keine Gnade - für Niemanden!
OF mit wahlweise engl.

    5.0 out of 5 stars 邦題「日本人の勲章」米import盤。
Reviewed in Japan on January 28, 2016

    5.0 out of 5 stars
Reviewed in Japan on August 23, 2019
