Don't Settle for Windows Movie Maker

I want to transfer VHS movies to DVD using my camcorder's analog to digital feature to convert the signal. The Windows Movie Maker software that comes with XP doesn't burn DVDs, or make DVD menus. Expecially the first problem is absolutely nuts, which is a shame, because Movie Maker is intuitive. So I got Premiere Elements 2, which seems to be the best, relatively low price way to do that (at least, if you get the rebate). Premier Elements 2 turns out to be much more cluttered than Movie Maker and it is more difficult to figure out. I figured out Movie Maker in a few minutes; it'll take a few hours to figure out Premiere Elements 2, and that's a bit annoying. But it seems do the job I want it to do. Someone complained that it won't work with a PC running an Athlon chip. I have an Athlon 64, and it works. The software's Read Me file says it only works with chips that have something called the SSE2 instruction set, and says the Intel Pentium III, AMD Athlon, AMD Athlon XP, and AMD Athlon XP-M don't have it and won't run the software. It says it does run on the Pentium 4, Pentium-M, Pentium-D, Pentium Extreme Edition, AMD Opteron, and AMD Athlon 64. There's a package insert that says if you register at a web site instead of through the product at installation, you can get a couple of free tutorials. That's an odd thing, since the product registers itself automatically. It turns out--at least for me--that even if you let the product register itself, you can still get the online tutorials.

There are plenty of free programs out there to manage your photos. I've tried most of them and this is by far the best one. Not only do you get a stripped down version of photoshop that is extremely powerful, you get a great interface and simple-to-use program for managing your photos.

If you're like me, you haven't named your photos and you haven't done a great job of backing them up on DVD. This program does an excellent job of grabbing all of your photos and letting you sort through them and categorize them, regardless of what their file name is and where they are stored on your computer.

It also helps you find all of the duplicates that you have on your computer. It has a nifty little timeline that shows when all of your pictures have been taken as well, which I really liked.

All and all, you will not be disappointed with this program if you have over a gig of photos.

Good product but has some key defects

I moved to Adobe Premiere from Pinnacle Studio because of the frequent crashes that is a fatal flaw with Studio. I have found Premiere Elements to be a stable program that has all the necessary tools to produe good DVD's. It seems to be reliable, which given my experience with Pinnacle is a key consideration. Premiere is strong in making image improvements to poor video, which I found to be very useful when making DVD's from some old 8mm film. The user interface is pretty easy to use but does take some time to learn. Now that I have some experience with it, I find it easy to use and powerful. The key framing capability is very powerful. In particular I have used it to produce some very impressive slide shows with smooth pans/zooms, lighting changes and dissolves.

There are a few key defects that that I find very aggravating but not disabling. The program is not able to make a DVD from a previously rendered file. In order for Premiere to make a DVD it must re-render the file which typically takes several hours. This is a big inconvienience when all that is needed is another copy of a previously rendered project. It is possible to make a folder of files that can be used by other applications (e.g. Roxio Easy Media Creator) to burn additional DVD's, but that requires you to have and use the other application. Another defect is the very limited DVD authoring capability. The structure of the available menus is such that it is not practicle to have more than one distinct movie on a DVD since the scene selection portion of the main menu merges all the scenes from all of the movies. The available title and menu templates are also limited and it is not easy to make your own since the menu and titling editors are very limited. Photoshop Elements is required to have any significant editing capability. These errors are not encountered when making a single DVD with a simple menus and scenes, which is probably a large fraction of the use.

I find Premiere Elements to be a very good application that has room for significant improvement. Regardless of the needed improvements, I am migrating all my work from Pinnacle Studio to Premiere Elements.

Good compared to Windows Movie Maker?

Let me just say that I am a true amature at video editing. But I know how to use a computer and use video editing software. I've tried a few different video editing softwares and I must say that APE 2.0 is good compared to Windows movie maker. That's not saying much! My computer is more than adequate, AMD x2-4800 w/ 2 gig matched ram, x850 pci-e. Forget the book that comes with it. I had to buy another book to learn how to do things that are not, but should be, in the book. There is so much this software can do, it would have been nice to have an included book that really pointed out some of the goodies and how to get to them.

I could not import video from my 1 year old sony mini-dv cam. I had to use Nero to import the video. Once I got the video imported the Pre.Elememts 2 software would lock up my computer and eventually crash the program.

Of course I updated via webupdate and I turned off all other programs and did some research on the net. Seems to be a common problem people are having. I was also able to import video via Windows Movie Maker 2.

Eventually I was able to edit some video, but when it came to finalizing the project, no luck! Things were off. I give up for now. Going back to my Powerbook for editing.

B.T.W. I submitted my rebate via certified mail and months after Adobe still hasn't "received" my submission even though I have a certified mail return card that it was delivered months ago. So if the post-rebate price is the decision maker on this, be aware.
