THE BEATLES "THE CAPITOL ALBUMS VOL. 2" includes the four albums released by Capitol Records in 1965: The Early Beatles, Beatles VI, Help! (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) & the American version of Rubber Soul. All tracks have been digitally remastered and are presented in both Stereo and Mono. Many tracks appear in stereo for the very first time on CD. Special packaging includes original album cover artwork and a 60-page collectors booklet with rare photos.

Unless your name is Ryan Adams, you're probably not in the habit of releasing four albums in four years, let alone the same number in one. But that's exactly what the Beatles did in 1965, thanks to Capitol Records' practice of mixing and matching tracks from their U.K. releases to create new, shorter records for the American market. Because standard-issue Beatles discs follow the British discography, The Capitol Albums, Vol. 2 marks the first CD appearance of The Early Beatles (March), Beatles VI (June), the Help! soundtrack (August), and the U.S. version of Rubber Soul (December), which are presented in both mono and stereo. And since the Brits' Please Please Me and Beatles for Sale are available only in mono, that means a lot of tracks are making their stereo CD debut here, including "Please Please Me," "Twist and Shout," "Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey Hey," "What You're Doing," and "Every Little Thing." This is also the first CD appearance of Ken Thorne's incidental music from Help! (James Bond intro, anyone?), as well as of the original wide-separation stereo mixes of Help! and Rubber Soul (not the 1987 George Martin digital remixes that appear on the British discs). All told, a full 82 of this set's 92 tracks have never before been available on CD. It's not quite the sonic revelation that was Vol. 1 (that box contained 32 stereo CD debuts, this one only 14), but it's a great listen nevertheless. Also included is a colorful, 60-page booklet featuring rare photos and liner notes by Beatles historian Bruce Spizer. --Benjamin Lukoff

corrected rubber soul mono campaign (pics included with reissue # on cds)
I bought both volumes when released from circuit city and yes I received the bad version of rubber soul with the bad remasters which was accidentally pressed with the safety copy then I was notified via email that the cd (rubber soul) can be returned via a capitol reissue campaign so I called the number and received a cd return envelope. and was instructed to return the defective cd only not the outer sleeve and I will receive the corrected copy in a week. I did and the new copy I got in less then a week. and was the corrected MONO set list. now whether this is still available as a service you will have to contact universal/EMI good luck.

These are the US editions which we grew up with. Extra albums, different track order, weird stereo seperation, etc. These were never meant to be compared to the U.K. releases. These versions are part of USA Beatle history. Now on to the goof up of the 1st batch.

The mono version of "Norwegian Wood" on Rubber Soul, Has the distinctive cough between the lines "... and she told me to sit anywhere" and "... so I looked around and I noticed there wasn't a chair" - I DIDN'T HEAR IT! which meant that the version was in fact the U.S. stereo mix "folded down" to mono.

On "I'm Looking Through You," Paul McCartney coming in early on acoustic guitar, That "false start" was heard on the song's U.S. stereo mix and not on the mono mix. This tell tale sign showed the stereo tapes were used mistakenly in the Rubber Soul pressing, as well as on Beatles VI.

Rather than let it be, Capitol decided to re-press the CDs with the correct tapes.

The initial production run of The Capitol Albums Volume 2 used improperly compiled masters for the Beatles VI and Rubber Soul discs. Although the discs sound great, they are not historically accurate in that the mono versions of those two albums are stereo-to-mono mixdowns. Oddly enough, The Early Beatles and Help! were originally prepared by Capitol in 1965 as stereo-to-mono mixdowns. So the initial production run of the box set has proper 1965 stereo-to-mono mixdowns for The Early Beatles and Help! combined with improper 2006 stereo-to-mono mixdowns for Beatles VI and Rubber Soul.

Here is an explanation of how the mono mishap most likely occurred. Capitol sent its 1965 stereo and mono master tapes of the albums to Sterling Sound for mastering. Sterling made stereo and mono masters for each of the albums using the original stereo and mono tapes from 1965. Sterling also made stereo-to-mono mixdowns for all of the albums. This was done to determine if the two tracks of the stereo masters were properly phased. Failure to have the tracks properly in phase would result in problems if the tracks were mixed down by radio or television stations for mono broadcast. These test mixdowns were not intended for release and were not sent to Capitol.

Capitol received reference discs containing the proper stereo and mono versions of each of the four albums. After careful review, Capitol gave its approval for the CDs to be manufactured with the stereo and mono masters it had received from Sterling. Unfortunately, an employee at Sterling mistakenly used the stereo-to-mono test mixdowns of Beatles VI and Rubber Soul when compiling the production masters. Thus, the factories were sent improper mono masters for the two albums.

    The Story

Capitol was made aware of the error during the production run. Andrew Gardner, host of a Beatles show in Philadelphia, noticed something odd when listening to an advance copy of the box set. He knew that the stereo version of "I'm Looking Through You" has a false start guitar intro not present on the mono version of the song. Much to his surprise, he discovered that the mono version of the song on his CD also had the false start. He contacted another disc jockey, who put him in touch with me. Although I was on vacation and had not heard the CDs, I knew from Gardner's description of the song that there was a problem. I called Capitol and made them aware of the error. It was quickly determined that the wrong mono tapes were used for Beatles VI and Rubber Soul. Capitol immediately contacted Sterling, who then sent the proper tapes to the factories for use in the remainder of and all future production runs. Capitol also set up a procedure where purchasers of the initial production run can exchange their discs for the corrected discs.

In 1965, Capitol intentionally created two albums worth of new mono mixes when it made stereo-to-mono mixdowns for The Early Beatles and Help! Over forty years later, Capitol unintentionally created two albums worth of new mono mixes for Beatles fans and collectors with its initial production run of Beatles VI and Rubber Soul. As John would say, "Most peculiar, Mama!"

The 2nd corrected batch has a "SK1" at the end of the catalog number on the yellow sticker.

I actually got into the Beatles through these Capitol Albums sets. I always told myself that if I was going to get into the Beatles' music, I wanted to hear the American albums that got them popular on this side of the pond. I really couldn't care less about the product that was being sold in Britain, because that's not what made the Beatles' popular here. Like it or not, the original Beatles fans in America were were listening to "Beatles VI" and the 12-track "Rubber Soul", not "Beatles for Sale" or the odd 14-track "Rubber Soul".

The set I got had the wrong mono mixes for "Beatles VI" and "Rubber Soul", and I did an easy, smooth exchange with EMI to get the correct ones. It took about 7 days from the day I mailed the discs to EMI to get replacements.

I guess I don't understand the complaints about fake stereo, reverb, 3rd generation masters, whatever. These discs are meant to be exact reproductions of what you'd buy in your local record store in 1965, for better or worse. The 1965 pressings were like this, so the CDs are too. The recordings are the exact same. If Capitol used earlier generation masters or used British mixes, that would not be historically accurate and therefore would negate the entire purpose of this set. It's not just about song order, it's about sound too!

As far as the stereo or mono versions of these records, I think both versions of the albums are all great, but with "Rubber Soul" especially, I hardly ever listen to the stereo. Mono is the way to go!

    Here's a CD-by-CD review:

"The Early Beatles" - This is basically a bunch of songs from the Vee-Jay release "Introducing... The Beatles" that Capitol put out after they re-acquired the rights to these songs. It's a good collection and some of the mixes are actually different than what you got on "I...TB". Pretty good stuff.

"Beatles VI" - A killer album. It contains one of the best covers of "Dizzy Miss Lizzie" I've ever heard. "Kansas City", "Eight Days a Week", "Yes It Is", "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party"...man how can you go wrong with an album packed with all those songs?!

"Help!" - The soundtrack to the film. Contains the musical score and also plenty of Beatles classics like the title track, and "I Need You".

"Rubber Soul" - The American version of this album wipes its butt with the British version. The 12-track album is much more earthy, rootsy and folksy than the British release, not to mention it inspired "Pet Sounds"! It makes a far grander musical statement than the British release as well. As far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as a 14-track version of "Rubber Soul" that opens with "Drive My Car".

Overall, every American fan needs this set, and also Volume 1, even if you grew up in the CD era and only know the British releases. These albums are part of the Beatles' legacy in America and are part of the reason why the Beatles are who they are in this country.

If you grew up in the 1960's U.S. as I did, you probably remember The Beatles from the Capitol albums. The stuff they've been playing on the "oldies" FM stations is mostly from the U.K./European releases (Parlophone?) and they just don't sound the same. Back in the day, you'd only find those on the "import" albums sold by the weird little shops on back streets of major cities. Some even seem to be alternate takes or mixes, most notably "In My Life" on the Rubber Soul album.

These are all the songs in the exact order (except you don't have to turn the record over!) complete with the sometimes tinny sound, the super-wide stereo separation and even the occasional funny noise between tracks. The only thing that annoys me about this collection is that the mono version of each album follows the stereo, so you need to pop the disc out if you don't want to hear the whole thing again in mono. I guess they had to put it in there for the REAL purists.

I bought both volumes at once and ended up with Volume 1 in a long box and Volume 2 in a "brick." While that would totally freak some people out, I was only mildly miffed as I bought them to listen to, not for the aesthetics. Still, they look like "Mutt and Jeff" sitting on the shelf.

This boxed set came out in 2006. Volume 1 came out in 2004. I specifically purchased them both recently because I wanted to hear how The Beatles sounded when I was a kid - how everyone in North America heard them first in 1964. I love the sound of these tracks ! I'm not a Beatles audiophile but I have been a life-long fan and know virtually every nuance of each of their songs. I have the 2009 remasters - stereo and mono boxes. Frankly, in many instances, I still prefer the Capitol versions as found on the Capitol Albums (volumes 1 and 2) box sets. I know this a 'sacrilege' to the audiophile. But hey, this is rock and roll not the Boston Symphony ! I don't really care if I can hear John breathing into the mic or Ringo's sometimes squeaky bass drum peddle. Rock and roll is about impact and punch as much as anything else - and the Capitol box sets have all of that. I dare anyone to do an A/B comparison listen between the 2009 remastered "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and the Capitol version from the 2004 box set. The Capitol version is mind-blowing!!. You can really understand why The Beatles had such a huge and immediate impact. The 2009 remasters are fine - just a bit too 'dry' for me. This year the US albums were "re-issued" but they used the 2009 remasters instead of the bone fide Capitol mixes. Fans were merely offered album art and track orders from the Capitol albums but not the original US mixes - no thanks ! So if you want to hear how The Beatles really sounded in North America from the 1960s to the 1980s at least, I strongly advise you to buy these two out-of-print boxes while they still exist ! Or find the original, scratchy lps - and good luck with that.
