Recommended Usage

For optimum accuracy, use your body composition monitor right after you wake up and at least 2 hours after each meal.

Avoid taking measurements after exercising, drinking a large amount of water, or bathing. These may significantly alter your body composition readings.

Do not use this device if you are pregnant or have an implanted medical device or cardiac pacemaker. Consult your physician before beginning a weight reduction program.

The Omron Advantage

Bioelectrical impedance is clinically proven. It works by sending a small, imperceptible electrical signal through the whole body–from arm to arm or foot to foot–to calculate total body water.

Given the ratios of the water in your upper and lower body change throughout the day – as gravity pulls more water into your lower extremities – the electrical impedance of the body also varies.

This is a fairly accurate way to estimate body fat percent. I actually did a small research study using this device in undergrad.
Points to consider:
1. It is effected by dehydration, excessive hydration, exercise, eating etc. The best time of day to check your body fat (bf%) is right after you wake up, void your bladder, and have a small glass of water.
2. This is fairly accurate for people of average weight. If you have a high BMI or below average BMI, this is less accurate.
3. Women should typically have a bf% between 20-32%, whereas men should have 10-22%. However, keep in mind this device has an error up to 5 or 6% in obese individuals. I'm a runner with a BMI of 20, and compared to the most accurate methods, this device was within 2% for me.
4. This is easy to use and affordable. The most accurate machines are $30,000 or more and require special training to use. So for $30 and something you can do at home, this is a deal.
I use my weight, my body fat percent, and circumference measurements to monitor my body composition and overall health.

Results comparable to the Bod-Pod

A friend & I had been going to a local university every 90 Days or so to have our body fat% calculated in a Bod-Pod which is a pressurized chamber that measures body mass & calculates a body fat % at a cost of $40/visit. Last visit I took this unit & we both verified our results within 15 minutes of getting the Bod-Pod results. Our values were both within 1% (total body fat %) of the university unit. I consider this unit to be a good relative indicator of fat%. It provides consistent results (if you are consistent in how you use it i.e. same time of day, same diet as usual, same H2O intake etc). This means I can track my gains/losses in a relative sense as opposed to an absolute value. Honestly, I’m not concerned about getting a “real” number but rather a consistent value that will indicate if I’m doing the right things to improve my BMI. If I wanted a true body fat% value I would search out a tank system that measures me in air and in water and calculates from there... too much hassle ... I’m not in a “body fat” contest. I am simply interested in moving in the right direction. My stats: 62 years old; 5’10“ 189lbs 13.2% body fat; Goal 10%. 3 rep max bench 235lb deadlift 410lb. 1500m: 5:52. My buddy: 32 years old Active soccer player, 5’9 173lbs 14.4% body fat; 400m 55sec & cross-fit crazy. Unit satisfies my needs. Last comment: if I eat a lot of things that would cause me to retain water, like salty nuts/chips or shrimp/asian food with soy, I will have higher values for a few days. This indicates to me that the resolution of the unit is pretty good: water is not as dense as muscle and since I’m retaining water (even if I don’t feel bloated) my numbers should indicate a higher body fat value - it’s just that it’s not really fat - but just a blip in my diet.

Convenience at the cost of precision

I bought this because I was getting tired of the tediousness of doing caliper measurements to get a BF reading. I also thought that the wide range of results I got one day to the next for the caliper reading would hopefully be improved by the Omron unit. It turned out to not quite be the case.

So I ran a completely unscientific comparison between the two over the course of 12 measurements. For the caliper, I did the Jackson/Pollock 3-site caliper method vs. the Omron HBF-306C. Over those 12 measurements, my average body fat for the caliper method was 20.6% with a standard deviation of 0.65 percentage points. For the Omron unit over the same 12 measurements, my average body fat was 22.5% with a standard deviation of 0.84 (about a 25% difference in precision, which is pretty significant in my opinion). The tests were always run first thing in the morning after voiding my bladder and taking a small drink of water.

I can't say I'm exactly disappointed since I knew going in to this that impedance-based BF monitors were known to be highly sensitive to your daily body composition, but I was optimistically hoping for better results. Jumping from 21.2% BF to 23.9% over the course of a week leaves me a bit underwhelmed, I'm fairly positive I didn't put on 6 pounds of fat in one week. Even I can't eat that many cheeseburgers and donuts. Not to mention I weighed 2 pounds less from the first measurement to the 2nd. I wasn't really bothered by the difference in actual BF percentage, since I didn't have a medical professional do a hydrostatic weighing or other more reliable method as a reference. If I had to guess which was more accurate, I'd say the Omron unit, purely based off of some utterly unreliable visual body fat charts I found on the internet.

Still, I'll probably use this in lieu of the calipers because the convenience is really nice. I'll just have to keep a mental note that I'm looking at a rough estimate of BF and not an actual hard value. If you take it with a grain of salt, this thing is not bad.

If you're looking for more precise results, don't want to spend the $35, and don't mind spending an extra minute or two a morning, spend $7 and just get a caliper and watch some youtube videos for instruction. I'm too lazy for that.

As a personal trainer I do use this machine on larger clients that I can't use calipers on. It's pretty accurate, but I would say it has about a 3% overage. So you are actually probably 3-% less than what the reading states. I have compared this to calipers and it's relatively accurate and useful for those who are larger and cannot be pinched.

Wasn't sure about accuracy at first, especially because the numbers can change each time you use it (like, within 10 seconds of using it, for example). But I lost 25 lb over 2.5 months and used this along with a typical digital scale during that time, and discovered that this is indeed an relatively accurate measurement of your body fat, despite the small fluctuations. In the long run, it is accurate. Just remember to keep updating your weight in the monitor as you gain or lose weight. Another tip is that, as you lose weight, you may eventually have to switch over to "Athlete" mode to continue to getting accurate readings. I think that happened to me around 16%-17% body fat (I started at 21% and ended up at 14%).
