Product Description

The general layout of the standard keyboard was designed before the introduction of the mouse. Since number entry was one of the primary functions of the keyboard at that time, having the numeric keypad on the right side made sense. Nowadays, most users use the mouse far more than the numeric keypad, so the keypad now occupies the space where the mouse should be. The Evoluent Mouse-Friendly Keyboard has a more sensible layout with the numeric keypad on the left so your mouse may be much closer on the right.

This is the best keyboard I have ever owned. I have tendonitis and find that the newer style of "island" keys is really tough on my hands, wrists and forearms. The island keys don't allow my fingers to slide, so I have to lift and press.... This is one of the very few keyboards that have keys just like older laptops before the new design. The edges of the keys are curved so I can slide over them easily. Another plus is that the keys are standard size. A lot of the newer keyboards have slightly smaller keys, which are also more difficult to use. I loved this so much I also bought the evoluent wireless keyboard with no number pad. It's small enough to fit in my travel bag and also has wonderful keys. I am so grateful to have found these!

The keyboard is slim and the keys are of high quality. The typing experience is very comfortable. My fingers were somewhat rigid from using my previous cheap keyboard, because as a programmer I am a heavy keyboard user. This keyboard felt like a massage to my fingers! The urge to strongly press keys like backspace when in frustration is starting to go away. The fact that the movement to and from the mouse is now shorter is a contributing factor. Having to use the keyboard is no longer a source of frustration.

Extra value for me is that the extra function keys (web, email, etc, volume controls) are symmetrical in size and position to the regular function keys (F1, F2, etc). This makes them completely integrated to the rest of the keyboard key and more accessible. From a conceptual point of view, this gives them the image "normal keys" rather than special ones as in most desktop keyboards. For a blind-typist and heavy keyboard user that design will probably feel more "natural", as it does for me. The row of the extra function keys is continuous and ends with three power control keys (wake, sleep, power off), making the first row a "control panel" for your computer, a design that is very practical and intuitive.

I should also add that the keyboard has a "handcrafted", or more accurately "hand-assembled", feeling, like this is a custom keyboard ordered from some small hardware company. This makes you less critical of some minor shortcomings compared to mainstream keyboards, like the quality of the surface of the plastic casing and the mysterious lack of tilt legs. The labels for the keyboard status indicators (Caps, Num and Scroll Lock) have an unimpressive typeface. If you are used to expensive keyboards from Logitech, Microsoft and the like these peculiarities might put you off. For me, they reinforce the strong "down-to-earth", "custom made" feeling that this keyboard has.

The placement of the second delete here (why do we need a second delete key??) as noted by another reviewer is a total non-starter for me. I bought this product to address the shoulder problem of having to reach over for my mouse using a standard right handed keboard (with the big ten-key and directional array on the right). But I use keystrokes a lot.I didn't buy it to create more problems and more re-wiring in my brain! Why not just relocate all that stuff to the left and leave the darn keyboard standard? I work part of the week at home on a laptop (I'm sure lots of users have to use more then one keyboard)--having to swith back and forth will never work for me. I had also tried a mini-keyboard but that had the same problem of a different flavor--the home key was located right next to a single-wide backspace key (check you keyboards--they almost always have a double-wide backspace because people use it so much). I was constantly hitting the home key instead of the backspace and you can see why that caused me to return that product too! Sheesh, people, don't solve one problem by creating more problems!

I'm not sure - I mean, this works as expected, but I am right handed and I never thought about it, but wiring my brain to type numbers with my left hand is impossible. I find that I simply do not use the numbers - and worse, i am constantly finding that my fingers are shifted and are never on the right keys. It's like trying to type a different language for me. Again, maybe I am just too accustomed to the regular keyboards after decades of using them, but I do not like this keyboard. I am simply tolerating it.

Nice layout but the keys mechanism is very fragile. This is the second one I have purchased, the first one was easily broken. When this one arrived, I had to re-seat 3 of the keys because they little nylon spring mechanism was not installed properly. They are fit and work very much like laptop keys.

If you really need the left handed keypad and small layout of this keyboard then this is the one to get. Treat it gently and it will be OK.

This keyboard, in combination with the Evoluent Mouse, has greatly reduced my shoulder pain.
The left-sided numeric keypad was easy to adjust to.
The positioning of the "delete" keys is not a problem for me, and I am a heavy hot-key user.
I had some reservations about purchasing it because I am a wireless-anything fan.
However, the significant ergonomic improvements make tolerating the wire worth it.

This is a very good mid-priced ergonomic keyboard. It's ideal for folks who spend much of their workday in spreadsheets or databases, passing back & forth between their keyboard & their mouse/trackball hundreds of times per hour. That stuff adds up, believe me!

I also enjoy the various ergonomic keyboards from Microsoft, esp. the Microsoft Sculpt. That one has the added benefit of being wireless, too.
