Product Description
A tough-as-nails cop teams up with an undercover agent to bring down a gun smuggling ring. Features some of the most amazing and influential action set pieces in cinematic history.
Amazon.com
Masterful Hong Kong action director John Woo (The Killer, Face/Off) turns in this exciting and pyrotechnic tale of warring gangsters and shifting loyalties. Chow Yun-fat (The Replacement Killers) plays a take-no-prisoners cop on the trail of the triad, the Hong Kong Mafia, when his partner is killed during a gun battle. His guilt propels him into an all-out war against the gang, including an up-and-coming soldier in the mob (Tony Leung) who turns out to be an undercover cop. The two men must come to terms with their allegiance to the force and their loyalty to each other as they try to take down the gangsters. A stunning feast of hyperbolic action sequences (including a climactic sequence in an entire hospital taken hostage), Hard-Boiled is a rare treat for fans of the action genre, with sequences as thrilling and intense as any ever committed to film. --Robert Lane

Dragon Dynasty's two-disc "Ultimate" edition is a welcome alternative to the out-of-print Criterion Collection DVD released in 1998. On disc 1, the film is presented in a pristine anamorphic transfer that's every bit as crisp and colorful as Criterion's non-anamorphic transfer was. For purists, a disc-to-disc comparison reveals a very minor difference: The film's original theatrical aspect ratio was 1:85:1, and because this edition is enhanced for viewing on 16 x 9 widescreen TVs (16 x 9 being roughly equivalent to 1.78:1), the result is a very slight image cropping on top, bottom, and sides. (In any case, these are nitpicking differences that only the most exacting videophiles will notice.) Dragon Dynasty's release also uses English "dubtitles," so named because they're taken from the English dub-script written for the film's original English-language dubbing track; while previous DVDs may have offered a more accurate translation from the original Cantonese, Dragon Dynasty's DVD is certainly the most accessible version for those who don't plan on collecting every DVD of Hard Boiled that's ever been released. And while the feature-length commentary by Hong Kong cinema expert Bey Logan may be lacking in critical insight, it's obvious that Logan is a devoted and well-informed fan of the "heroic bloodshed" genre of Hong Kong action films, and his knowledgeable commentary is filled with relevant details that place Hard Boiled in a thorough historical context. (And yes, Logan really is playing a drinking game during his commentary, downing a shot of liquor every time Anthony Wong appears in a different-colored sport coat!)
The special features on disc 2 consist primarily of in-depth interviews with Hard Boiled's core creative team. The absence of Chow Yun-Fat is regrettable, but in the 38-minute "Baptism of Fire" featurette, director John Woo goes into great detail (speaking in English) about how he wanted to create a screen hero like Clint Eastwood or Steve McQueen; how he refined Chow Yun-Fat's "cool" image on screen; how he constantly wanted more gunfire and bigger explosions; and the daily conditions that affected the filming of Hard Boiled. Woo's long-time producing partner, Terence Chang, is the subject of the 25-minute "Partner in Crime" interview, and he brings a producer's budget-minded perspective to his often humorous discussion (in English) about bringing Woo's vision to the screen . In a 15-minute interview, former Hong Kong undercover cop Philip Chan discusses (in English) his co-starring role in Hard Boiled, his experiences working with Woo, Chow Yun-Fat, and others in the cast, and his astute observations about the film's lasting impact. "Mad Dog Bites Again" is a 25-minute interview (in Cantonese) with Hard Boiled villain and action coordinator Kwok Choi, whose onscreen presence is one of the film's most memorable ingredients. The "Location Guide" featurette takes its cues from Bey Logan's commentary, as Chinese-Canadian actress Kea Wong (who played Jubilee in the second and third X-Men movies) hosts a present-day tour of Hong Kong locations (some now gone, some still remaining) used in Hard Boiled. Also included: the film's Hong Kong theatrical trailer and U.S. promotional trailer. --Jeff Shannon

- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2024Even though it took a while for the movie to arrive, the wait was worth it. I had a blast watching this movie from the beginning to the end. This movie is definitely one of John Woo's best films. It was a big influence on Hard Target and Face/Off with its choreography and shootout sequences. It had little homage to Terminator 2 with the guns in the flower box. And homages to Die Hard in the hospital. It had a great story with the two detectives working together to crackdown on the Triads. Both proving themselves to be lethal fighting machines in the action scenes. Underrated foreign film that deserves more recognition and I would recommend it to anyone who likes shootouts. Thank you Amazon.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2007Undoubtedly one of the finest action films ever made, Hard Boiled tops every single slam bang, big budget, mainstream action film you have ever seen. Chow Yun-Fat stars as a super tough cop on the trail of the murderous triad, only to learn that an up and coming triad soldier (Tony Leung) he has his sights set on is an undercover cop who gives the term deep cover new meaning. As loyalties shift and the bullet and body count rise, the two team up and help provide some of the most dynamic and exciting action scenes ever put to film, including a standoff at a hospital that concludes in a barrage of blood, bullets, glass, and incredible carnage. Before he came over to America and helmed watered down mainstream action films like Broken Arrow, Mission: Impossible 2, and Paycheck (personally, the only film of his I've liked that he's made over here is Face/Off), John Woo crafted the amazing action scenes that you've heard so much about with this film. This double disc Ultimate Edition released under the Weinstein Company's Dragon Dynasty label features a nice selection of extras (yet no commentary from Woo or Chow Yun-Fat) including an examination of how much Hard Boiled has influenced the action genre over the years. To this day Hard Boiled remains a masterpiece, and if you're an action junkie who has never seen the film before, you need to pick this up immediately.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2009The Good Things
*The video/sound quality is great. The picture is a bit grainy, but still clean, sharp, colorful, and vivid.
*Includes a commentary and a bunch of featurettes and interviews.
*Includes English dubbing, as well as the original Chinese and optional English subtitles.
*Contains a huge amount of great action scenes. The last hour is especially awesome; it's like a nonstop sequence of shoot-outs. Like any John Woo movie, it has a lot of slow-motion jumping and flying and crashing-through-glass, but none of it is hoaky or cliched (no darn doves either).
*Photography is good.
*Fight scene choreography is good.
*Production design (sets, props, costumes) were good. One of the bad guys (who incidentally only had one eye) had a way cool gun.
*The story is good.
*The characters are quite good. They are well-acted and well-written.
*Music is not bad.
*It dawned on me, as I was watching this, that this is the predecessor to the video game "Stranglehold." Cool.
The Bad Things
*I think the sides of the screen may have been cut off or something. Other people seem to have a "skewered" image. Either way, there's something weird about the aspect ratio.
*Subtitles translate only the English dubbing, not the original Chinese dialogue.
*Not for the squeamish; contains lots of bloody violence, brutality, and lots of swearing.
The Questionable Things
*Some things are quite absurd (I can't remember what specifically, but I remember seeing some of the action scenes and thinking "yeah right!"). If you prefer movies to be totally realistic, you may wind up laughing at a lot of things. But if you can suspend disbelief, it's not so bad.
*The first hour had some slow parts to it.
Once, I said that "Invisible Target" resembled "Die Hard," but now I see that I spoke way too soon. This movie is much more like a Chinese "Die Hard," and it's equally thrilling, if not moreso. Although the first hour of this movie seemed a bit long, the second hour was a non-stop extravaganza of violent action. Above all, it was well-made and John Woo's style is most original and fresh in this film. This DVD edition is not the best, but I found it suitable; die-hard fans, or fans of Hong Kong cinema, may be dissapointed. Still, highly reccomended to anybody who enjoys action!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2002I had seen all of John Woo's US films (MI:2, Face Off, Broken Arrow and so on) and I needed something new to tide me over. What I chose was what must have been one of the greatest action movies I have ever seen! John Woo shows off his true skills in this excellent Hong Kong shoot'em up with of course the great performance with the legenndary Chow Yun-Fat, playing the role of rogue cop Tequila. In just one minute I was completely blown away! I couldn't keep my self from drooling while just staring in astonishment! The whole movie was everything I could ever hope for in an action flick. Endless gunfights, great choreography and Chow Yun-Fat just being one bad ..., one man army! Tequila shoots it out with Triads magnificently wheather in a restaurant, warehouse and even a hospital. This movie really shines though in it's high-octane finale in the huge hospital. Tequila and his buddy Tony (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) cleaning house side by side with Tequila mowing guys down with my personal favorite pump-action shotgun. There's also a great scene involving a human wall of hostages used by the baddies that Tequila and Tony save brilliantly! After watching it once I went right back to the beginning just to see it again because it was just so damn good! If your looking for something to just blow you right on your [rear] with classic hardcore action except no substitutes, Hard Boiled is a rare gem.

N. M. FletcherReviewed in the United Kingdom on May 28, 20155.0 out of 5 stars Criterion edition.
I'm afraid that this edition is the best transfer available at the moment ( 28th May 2015) which is a real shame because at present it's $399.99 from Amazon. Com.I'm sure that you know the film inside out so I'll just give you the tech stuff.
126 mins, Cantonese Dolby digital mono, English Dolby digital mono (Dubbed), English subtitles.
The special features: Dual layer (It's never looked better).
Audio commentary by John Woo,Producer Terence Chan, filmmaker Roger Avery and critic David Kehr.
Trailers for 11 of Woo's Hong-Kong films.
A student film by Woo called Accidentally.1968,10 mins.
A guide to Hong-Kong crime films by David Chute.
Notes on Hard Boiled.
If you're lucky enough to find this particular version second hand, snap that hand off. At the time of writing there is a Vivendi Visual edition that's affordable but apparently it suffers the same problematic transfer as all the other versions, which is such a shame as I think that this is no less worthy of proper bluray transfer as say Kurosawa, Park Chan -Wook or Scorsese. My own opinion, of course, I'm sure others may disagree.
This particular edition has been out of print for ages, so good luck, it's well worth buying.
The NexusReviewed in Canada on August 21, 20135.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Action Movie EVER!!
This review is for the Criterion Collection.
There was a time when everything was starting to bore me, action movies included. So when I first downloaded this movie, I was just expecting a dull, average action movie. So before going to bed, I decided to watch this movie at 1 in the morning.
Boy, was I in for a surprise! This movie was everything I was looking for, and more! It's violent, imaginative, entertaining as hell, and just downright AWESOME.
The plot: After a cat-and-mouse rivalry between them as they slowly start to realize they're fighting for the same goal, Inspector Tequila eventually teams up with undercover cop Tony to take down the gunrunning triads led by Johnny Wong, which leads to one of THE MOST MEMORABLE showdowns in a hospital--probably the longest final shootout ever filmed (a whole forty or so minutes!). The shootouts themselves are definitely among the best ever put to the big screen. This movie got me into John Woo. It's also worth owning for the shootouts alone (which take up most of the movie).
This set contains dub tracks in English and Cantonese, although I watch the English dub because it seems to add to the list of enjoyable things about this movie. It also includes trailers for every John Woo film ever made, a student film by John Woo (no English subtitles for that, though), and more! The quality of the picture and sound is good and the characters (the ones that are meant to be likeable) are likeable enough for you to care about their plight.
Overall, ***** out of *****
