I've read that Edward Plunkett, Lord Dunsany, wrote with a quill, filling page after page just letting the words flow. That is how The King of Elfland's Daughter reads, a tone poem of fantasy, magic, and words. The story meanders on a river of prose, some of it somewhat archaic but always beautiful.
This is high fantasy at its best. An earthling prince falls in love with an Elf princess and brings her away from her kingdom. They have a son, part magic and part human. But life in fantasies is never smooth.
This is a small book but took me some time to read, partly because I often stopped to savor the prose.
"And her voice had the music that, of earthly things, was most like ice in thousands of broken pieces rocked by a wind of Spring upon lakes in some northern country."
Dunsany was hailed as the "Kings of Dreams". I think this passage from this book illustrates his writing best:
"And little he knew of the things that ink may do, how it can mark a dead man's thought for the wonder of later years, and tell of happenings that are gone clean away, and be a voice for us out of the dark of time, and save many a fragile thing from the pounding of heavy ages; or carry to us, over the rolling centuries, even a song from lips long dead on forgotten hills."

Difficult to read

That's the third book that I read by Lord Dunsany, and the third that I gave 2 stars. This one tells the story of kingdom and his desire for magical things. To fullfill this desire, the son of the king travels to realm of the elves, kidnaps the elven princess and brings her to his kingdom, and the story goes on and on. Lord Dunsany wanted to be a poet, but wrote in prose, and this combination is a disaster. The book is hard to read, repetitive and boring. It was very difficult to reach the end of the book.
I got this book because it was a source for "The Elven", by Bernhard Hennen, and in fact all the main elements of the excellent book of Hennen are present here. The eternal life of the elves, the gateways between the two worlds, the magical nature of the elves, and the hatred of Christianity toward magical things. But, The King of Elflands Daughter is not a good book by today standards, is a relic of a distant past that did not age well!

Fantastic tale, sub-par printing

I love Dunsany, and this is probably one of his best tales. It is, as you would probably expect, a very lyrical fantasy bursting with that other-worldly mood that pervades most of Dunsany's work.

However, I really have to fault the printing. The type is very slender and tiny (and unnecessarily so, as the lines seem double-spaced and much of each page is white space). The paper stock is not pulp, but it is also not the best, so the tiny characters may also be slightly obscured by the paper fibers. The cover, while charming in design, looks like a very low-res print (e.g. anti-aliased pixels).

This is a fabulous story, I loved it the first time I read it and I am enjoying re-reading it. Although I think all of Dunsany's work should now be in the public domain, I was certainly willing to pay for a physical copy of this one. It's just a shame that the presentation of this particular volume is so unnecessarily compromised.

Very poor printing. Line spacing all messed up. No front material like editor or critical comments. Cover artwork all pixelated. Maybe the front cover artwork is supposed to be like that, but the back cover has a photo of the author that's very poor. Both are like a thumbnail size graphic stretched to fit. This is for the paperback.

The one and only Lord Dunsany!
He creates worlds better and far more beautiful than this one of ours.
Easy to create a fictional world better than this one, sure. Any schoolkid can write "and everybody shares what they have."But to create a fictional world far more mysterious and beautiful than this one...that's only the author of this book, which is maybe his best fantasy novel.
Buy it, pilgrim!

Beautifully written...however, I will say the entire could have been told in half the book. It's fairy tale-esque and definitely dreamy.

Some might find the language, and perhaps a few of the ideas, archaic. However, it is considered a fantasy classic and well worth picking up, especially if you are a fantasy lover. You'll likely find that the more modern fantasy tales still borrow from books such as The King of Elfland's Daughter. It's not an easy read, but it is a beautiful one.
