- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2023This was a really good movie. Since Hanssen died within the last month and his story made the news, I was happy to find that someone had made a movie about him. Apparently this is not the first movie made about this story so I will have to find the other one. I have always enjoyed spy movies and found this movie to be very absorbing and at times I was on the edge of my seat fearing his pursuers would be caught and the whole operation would be uncovered and this traitor would never be caught. Thankfully he was eventually caught and I still wonder what his motives were as it seemed that he wasn't all that interested in money. He seemed to be motivated by his own ego; thinking he could outsmart everyone in the FBI for 20+ years might have been a response to an unimpressed father or a lack of connection there as was alluded to in the movie. I cannot personally relate to a man willing to sell out his country for money or just to feed his own ego. I was also able to grasp that he was a tortured soul in some respects but for reasons unknown, and he seemed to be driven by his own demons. He was addicted to pornography and betrayed his wife in the most intimate and horrible manner. After news of his death I wondered, Bob was it all worth it? He was sentenced to life in prison and spent 23 out of 24 hours each day in solitary confinement.
Chris Cooper does a great job of showing the driven character and yet a tortured man seeking something. Perhaps it was his father's approval? Ryan Phillipe is very believable as the young agent who was assigned to bring him down. After watching this movie I noticed this was based on a book written by Eric O'Neill who was the special agent assigned to this case. I have since purchased this book and am awaiting its arrival. If you like spy movies then this is a good one to watch especially since it is based on a true story.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2024During the first 10 minutes, a friend said to me, "Is that all this is? They just talk." The story is true and the film makers wanted the audience to understand that FBI Hanson appeared to be a straight arrow. Nothing that set off alarm bells. They convinced the watcher. Then his assistant, Eric, who was investigating Hanson asked his supervisor, "I want to know the full story. Why am I investigating him?" Then the audience is show what Hanson has done. Wow! He hides it well. It is amazing to see.
First, I'd recommend this movie to others. Second, I'd recommend that they watch the Bonus Material. By the end of the movie plus the bonus info, my friend was shocked, but happy they saw this.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2018"A nation can survive its fools and even the ambitious, but it cannot survive treason from within."--Cicero, Ancient Roman Senator and Orator.
This film opens with John Ashcroft, the U.S. Attorney General, announcing that the United States completed an investigation to end a serious breach in security and arrested Robert Hanssen, a 25 year veteran of the FBI, for espionage. We thus know how this film ends.
Robert Hanssen, played by Chris Cooper, an FBI Top Soviet Analyst is being investigated for downloading pornographic material. Eric O'Neill, an FBI Agent, played by Ryan Phillippe, is assigned to discreetly observe Hanssen and get information on his computer activities. Hanssen is a devout Catholic, and Eric finds it hard to believe that he is a pervert. Eric comes to admire and respect Hanssen. He complains to his superior about being on "perversion detail," as he puts it. His superior, Kate Burroughs, played by Laura Linney, reveals the truth. Hanssen is a traitor.
Robert Hanssen has imparted vast amounts of military data and intelligence to the Russians. He has informed where the president and vice president will be taken in the event of a nuclear attack. He has compromised 50 human sources and brought about the death of three men who were executed by the KGB. He has compromised immeasurable assets. As Kate said, 'It is the worst breach in the history of U.S. intelligence." Moreover, Hanssen is a pervert, despite his devout Catholicism. He tapes his moments that he makes love to his wife and mails it to someone in Germany. Hanssen becomes suspicious that he is being investigated, and he sends a letter to Russia stating that he will no longer accommodate them. The FBI intercepts the letter. Eric, however, is convinced that Hanssen will make one more drop. And he was right.
On February 20, 2001, Robert Hanssen is arrested for treason.
Chris Cooper is outstanding as Robert Hanssen. Ryan Phillippe is also outstanding as Eric O'Neill. Laura Linney, an excellent and beautiful actor in every film she is in, is a cool, professional FBI Agent in this film. Gary Cole and Dennis Haysbert play FBI agents and they are excellent. The supporting cast is also excellent.

A.SturgessReviewed in the United Kingdom on September 7, 20095.0 out of 5 stars Superb - no other word for it.
OK - so let's look at why this film shouldn't be as superb as it is ...
(1) The first few minutes tell you how it's all going to end, so you know what's going to happen even before the main film starts.
(2) There is virtually no action whatsoever in the sense of chases, fights etc. There's a mildly tense scene near the end in a wood at night when a gun is fired, but apart from that - nothing.
(3) The film is mostly dialogue between the two main characters played by Chris Cooper and Ryan Phillippe, with some other important dialogue such as that between Ryan Phillippe and Laura Linney or Ryan Phillipe and Caroline Dhavernas.
So the film should be dull or even boring - but it isn't. Absolutely not. It grabs you from the start and draws you in deeper and deeper as tension builds and you come to care about every single character - even the villain of the piece who is played with intensity and depth by Chris Cooper. The final visual of the film, as lift doors close, is one that you won't forget in a hurry.
I also recommend watching two particular special features on the DVD which explore both the film-making process and the anatomy of a character. They really do show you how exact the film-makers were when it came to getting everything just right: All the people who, in real life, were involved in tracking down the traitor, were not only interviewed but also shown taking part behind the cameras during the filming. Things were done so carefully that the actress playing one character actually wore a copy of the wedding ring worn by the person who had been involved for real in the events being portrayed.
And yet this is not a mere 'True Crime' retelling of events - it is a dramatic film based on a wonderful script with an ensemble of superb actors and actresses. I'd class it as being genuinely 'unmissable'.

An excellent film with great character exploration which prevents simple conclusions
Physically disc was perfect, but the box was broken, like it had been crushed.

cartarinoReviewed in Italy on September 26, 20124.0 out of 5 stars la più grande storia di spionaggio USA
