Product Description
No second names are needed in the title to tell music lovers who is singing in this gala recital. The original, audio-only Cecilia & Bryn: Duets, issued in 1999, had opera-lovers around the world echoing one Amazon.com customer's remark: 'After listening to this album, all I could say was 'I want more.' Here it is: a live performance with the same conductor, an even better orchestra, and a video dimension that brings out the singers' considerable acting skills.
Cecilia Bartoli is most at home in mezzo-soprano material, where her tone is particularly rich and natural, her style exactly what the music requires. But she also slips easily into the soprano roles of Zerlina, Papagena, and Susanna. She takes a tantalizing step into promising, relatively unfamiliar territory with an aria from Haydn's L'anima del filosofo. Bryn Terfel shows a significant comic flair in the catalog aria from Don Giovanni and a heroic dimension in an aria from Judas Maccabeus--in either style, displaying a voice that is pure gold.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2015I will happily join the crowd. These two favorites put on a show one would not want to miss. I do have one very vigorous complaint directed at the producer of the subtitles: they are inadequate. Long before Beverly Sills had the courage to follow the lead of a Canadian friend and introduce written words into the opera house, I was arguing with traditional opera buffs that songs (whether an "aria" or a Rodgers and Hart theater-hoped for popular song) are comprised of music and words...and it is not enough, as many experienced opera attendees of that period would argue, to know that ten minutes of singing was just him telling her he loved her. As Sills reported, immediately that words were shown, singers noticed a greater responsiveness of audiences to every nuance of the aria. Now it is true that many concerts that are issued do not bother with this expense...and this one did. There are subtitles. I appreciated them. However, they were too scanty for one who likes to know exactly what he is saying to she, and she to him. For the most part, it would appear, current watchers do too, since otherwise issuers of DVD's would not pay the freight to have subtitles superimposed on the performance.
So, a fine disc to watch and hear...but unless you are of the Old Breed, you will have to accept that all that you will know of what they are saying, in most cases, is, you are a smart dame, I sure am.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2002I'd first seen this performance on CBC TV(Canada) in 2001 and immediately knew I was watching something special. Having purchased and just watched the DVD two things become abundantly clear. First, it's even better than I remembered and second, this recording makes it so obviously clear how much more an excellent DVD gives the viewer, compared to an equally excellent, but visually lacking, CD.
On this DVD one gets to see and hear not only two great virtuosos in what must be their absolute singing prime, but also two incredible actors who obvious absolutely love what they are doing: And if that wasn't enough you get to listen to a magnificent orchestra who has a conductor with impeccable timing. Also the photography is wonderfully done: just the right facial expression, just the right cut to the next camera for the most appropriate view: just the right angle to see the cello player come in on a certain note to accompanying the vocalist. Magic, just magic! Too bad there wasn't more.
Appendage Oct/2002
Since my original review of this DVD in Jan 2002 I would like to add that this has, without a doubt, become my favorite opera DVD: and Donizetti's "Quanto amore" from the Elixer of Love is my favorite piece. Although there are several others that are truly wonderful ("madamina", "La ci darem la mano" and "Pa-pa-pa" just to mention a few)
It is the definitive perfect mix of Singer-Conductor-Orchestra acting as a living breathing entity.
What a thrill it must have been to have witnessed this performance live.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2008HD-DVD of Cecilia & Bryn at Glyndebourne has a serious problem!
Both my 3rd gen Toshiba players show:
Cannot play the disc.
Error Code: 408bc00c
deepdiver said the same of the HD-DVD disc on 3-18-08. (I got my 1st disc before him but have been busy and hadn't tried looking at it until 2 weeks ago.) So far, I've now gotten 2 discs of this from Amazon, and they're (Amazon) now (e-mail this morning) insisting that I take a 3rd one!!
I've an A35 and an A3 player, both w/the latest 2.0 firmware. I don't have Die Fledermaus, but I do have other Opus Arte HD-DVD discs (and no problems with them).
Better sound is my main reason for getting HD-DVD and Dolby TrueHD5.1 has been a winner over the 5.1 sound found on regular DVD video. (i.e. DD5.1 and sometimes also DTS5.1)
The only good news is that returning the box back to Amazon doesn't take much time, and only costs a couple pennies of adhesive tape (with reuse of a previously used incoming mailer). Aggravation is the big downside.
I also HATE that Amazon mixes reviews of HD-DVD together with DVD/VHS reviews, and assume they do the same with Blu-Ray, and wish that they'd at least stop doing that for Blue-Ray.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2014What a tremendous agility and tonal control she possesses! He demonstrates and delivers a remarkable rich baritone quality along with its vocal nuance to the arias he undertakes. You are hearing two very remarkable voices that, in my opinion are, in their range, the outstanding voices of our time. You MUST hear Cecelia perform songs and arias by priest/composer Agostino Steffani at Versailles. it's called " Mission". You will be convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2017This is a biased review. My wife and I like a lot of opera music and we personally find Cecilia most charming and talented. She has a beautiful voice and in addition, her facial expressions as she performs is so much fun to watch and experience. Bryn is excellent too, and the pair are spectacular. We've enjoyed other DVDs of this duo from Netflix and have not been disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2021Delighted with quick service and good packaging. Looking forward to viewing DVD.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2013You don't see or hear a performance like this every day. The voice of both Cecilia and Bryn are spectacular, but more than that, they enjoy what they are doing and share their enthusiasm with the audience. The only reason for not giving this DVD the maximum rating is that personally I don't like some of the arias that were selected, but again, that is only my personal taste. If you like to listen (and watch) the performance of great operatic singers this is a must DVD.

BDReviewed in France on May 24, 20134.0 out of 5 stars un moment somme toutes populaire !
PhiltheswimReviewed in the United Kingdom on April 25, 20105.0 out of 5 stars Cecilia and Bryn
Here are two performers at the height of their talent and obviously relishing working together.
The singing sparkles and they obviously enjoy performing together. This is especially notable in the duet from Mozart's "Don Giovanni" which oozes sexual tension. They are very ably supported by some very tender orchestral playing. A DVD to be dipped into at any time.
