Strategic Project Management Made Simple: Practical Tools for Leaders and Teams Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 269 ratings

When Fortune Magazine estimated that 70% of all strategies fail, it also noted that most of these strategies were basically sound, but could not be executed. The central premise of Strategic Project Management Made Simple is that most projects and strategies never get off the ground because of adhoc, haphazard, and obsolete methods used to turn their ideas into coherent and actionable plans. Strategic Project Management Made Simple is the first book to couple a step-by-step process with an interactive thinking tool that takes a strategic approach to designing projects and action initiatives. Strategic Project Management Made Simple builds a solid platform upon four critical questions that are vital for teams to intelligently answer in order to create their own strong, strategic foundation. These questions are:

1. What are we trying to accomplish and why?

2. How will we measure success?

3. What other conditions must exist?

4. How do we get there?

This fresh approach begins with clearly understanding the what and why of a project - comprehending the bigger picture goals that are often given only lip service or cursory reviews. The second and third questions clarify success measures and identify the risky assumptions that can later cause pain if not spotted early. The how questions - what are the activities, budgets, and schedules - comes last in our four-question system. By contrast, most project approaches prematurely concentrate on the how without first adequately addressing the three other questions. These four questions guide readers into fleshing out a simple, yet sophisticated, mental workbench called "the Logical Framework" - a Systems Thinking paradigm that lays out one's own project strategy in an easily accessible, interactive 4x4 matrix. The inclusion of memorable features and concepts (four critical questions, LogFrame matrix, If-then thinking, and Implementation Equation) make this book unique.

Terry Schmidt followed an unusual path to become a thought leader in strategic planning and project management. After earning an aerospace engineering degree and working briefly for NASA, he earned his Harvard Business School MBA and edited the campus newspaper.

He became a planner for the US Department of Transportation in Washington DC, and after deciding that big business and big government was not for him, he became a consultant to developing countries, designing projects and training managers for World Bank and USAID funded projects.

Terry then formed his own consulting firm, and has helped leaders at all levels in 36 countries to apply best practice methods to think, plan, act, and get great results.

He worked with the original LOGICAL FRAMEWORK APPROACH creators, and improved this powerful system to make it simpler and easier to use on a wider basis. His best-selling book STRATEGIC PLANNING MADE SIMPLE features the LOGICAL FRAMEWORK, and combines the best ideas from strategic planning, project management, and the scientific method into a step by step process to get better results faster.

Terry is founder of www.ManagementPro.com, and of StrategicPlanningAcademy.com. He is a certified PMP, and the fourth person in the world to receive the distinguished Strategic Planning Professional certification from the Association for Strategic Planning (ASP). He regularly teaches executive programs at UCLA and MIT, and developed the SHARPEN YOUR STRATEGIC SUPERPOWERS program.

Terry's clients invite him to help sharpen their strategies, develop robust action plans quickly, and implement smoothly to achieve goals.

A dog lover, Terry is proud that his "strategy topdog" Mushka won first prize in the ASP video contest. This makes Terry the second most famous strategist in his family, following his dog!

Where to begin, I know, Terry Schmidt’s Strategic Project Management book. Terry’s book hands down lays the foundation toward strategic project management. Anyone is looking for a strategic approach to project management. Get Terry Schemidt’s book. His book thoroughly explains and teaches his Logical Framework Approach, which is termed LogFrame. Terry’s LogFrame tool is a grid (matrix) that consists of four strategic questions built into Logical columns. This is where STP gets good-er. Each LogFrame column is strategic, logical, and practical. The book is written very well and explains the four strategic questions beautifully. The book has plenty of additional nuggets, too. I will say this; I’ll definitely be using Logical Framework Approach to all of my future projects. Thank you, Terry for writing a very useful and practical book on project management. THINK, PLAN, and ACT the strategic WAY!!

The bonus part of my review - Strategic Project Management deserves a rating of 6 instead of 5. Terry is gracious man! I went to his website – managementpro.com to download Terry’s complete LogFrames, from his past real world projects that his book shares. I received an email, from his website, but without any of the LogFrames. So, I decided to email the author (Terry Schmidt). I was thinking that I wasn’t going to hear nothing back from the author. Lo and behold, to my surprise, I received an email from Terry the very next day. Less than twelve hours. I was shocked to say the least, but impressed! Not only did Terry respond to my email, but also emailed me all the complete LogFrames projects that His book mentioned, from his personal email address. Super impressive!! This man is awesome! Buy Terry’s book if you want to learn from a strategic master!

I picked up this book based on a recommendation from a colleague. I was looking for tools for managing multiple projects. What I found was so much more. I have read and re-read this book several times -- each time new insights emerge! This book has become my go-to resource for planning.

The book outlines an approach that includes deep thinking and an actionable framework for achieving goals. Oftentimes, projects go off the rails because not enough time is spent upfront thinking through, what the author Terry Schmidt calls, the Four Critical Strategic Questions:

1. What are we trying to accomplish?
2. How do we measure success?
3. What other conditions must exist?
4. How do we get there?

The author's ability to link these four questions (the building blocks for well designed strategic projects) with an immensely practical framework for putting these ideas into action is really what distinguishes this book from others. The nugget here is the LogFrame (or Logical Framework) "an elegant, concise framework with which one can build the simplest to the most complex projects from start to finish, providing a path through the jungle of complications and changing conditions." The framework provides the right mix of structure and flexibility for designing and managing initiatives in a rapidly changing context.

By connecting a process for gaining clarity of purpose and a path for action, Schmidt has provided readers with a simple, yet powerful approach to tackling all kinds of projects, strategic initiatives, and endeavors. Highly recommended!

I found this book very interesting. It covers an area in project management that often lacks proper attention irl: why are we doing projects and how we understand when we done. A suggested framework is very simple and stimulates to see blind spots in project environment.

I am the inventor of the Logical Framework tool Terry featured in his book. As a physicist, I saw the need for a more scientific approach to help the USAID (US Agency for International Development) do a better job of planning, implementing, and evaluating their multi-billion dollar project portfolio in developing countries. My team installed this method in USAID missions in 50 countries, and many organizations around the world have adopted it as a way of doing business.

Terry was one of the most creative consultants and trainers in my company Practical Concepts Incorporated: it was my pleasure to mentor him and work together on projects in Bangladesh, Thailand and elsewhere.

Then we lost contact until recently when, voila, he sent his book. I am pleased that it makes available some powerful and practical concepts for leaders at all levels, private and public sector.

Terry has taken my original work to another level, adding strategic questions and other features to make this approach easier to understand and use. This publication adapts the Logical Framework to a mainstream business and technical audience.

My hope is that knowledge workers of all types will recognize the power of this approach and put it to use. STRATEGIC PROJECT MANAGEMENT MADE SIMPLE: PRACTICAL TOOLS FOR LEADERS AND TEAMS can help address the problems and opportunities you face.

The book itself is interesting. But apparently it was printed without the Chapter 3, which is really frustrating.
