Where the first book sees our protagonist struggle against the dark society he grows up this book is more of an internal struggle as our heroic drow struggles against the dangerous being he has become living in the wilds of the underdark.
This is the second part of a pre trilogy that explains the origins of Drizzt. The author does a great job and showing how this portion of his life shaped and sharpen our drow hero.
There is little to complain about if anything when it comes to this fantasy. The author does use third person omnipresent point of view but pulls it off very well. They are plenty of tickets for Dungeons & Dragons fans it's fine but even readers who do not know of the role-playing game will find themselves pulled into this fantasy world without being confused or lost.

This book is, as the title of the review suggests, relatively standard. It is also a classic, which complicates any review, being a significant foundation of the genre that came later. I would highly recommend it. The characters are not particularly deep, but the world is extensive. This is, of course, the second of a trilogy, but to be honest, as long as one has some understanding of the Forgotten Realms from other source material, reading the first book is not necessary for enjoyment. The combat sequences can be formulaic at times, but this may be hindsight after reading so much of a genre that was still in its infancy at the time of writing. Either way, a modern reader may not take away as much enjoyment as the original reader, but it is still worth picking up (assuming one can pick it up an at least slightly discounted price, because 7.99 for an electronic book this old is a bit expensive in my opinion).

The are very few authors I can name who's writing style can continue to keep me curious and interested enough in a series to go past a 3rd book. I will start the 3rd book in this series now. Knowing that I'm going to really love this 3rd book and all that follow it. There is only one way this series could be ruined for me. And that could only happen if this author's following books in this series ended up being written for a child's understanding. And of course if a writer's style changed enough to insult my intelligence along with thousands of other readers. Common sense would dictate a very fast end to any of the authors writings.
I will write a review an the 3rd book once I have finished reading it.

I ordered the first 3 books of this series at the same time, and only the 1st and the 3rd books came. I finished reading the 1st book quickly and I've been waiting a long time for the second BOOK, which I ASSUMED was a BOOK based on the damn PICTURE of this add showing the actual BOOK. Today, this "book" was delivered except it's not a book as advertised, it's the GRAPHIC NOVEL, like a comic book. THE COVER ISN'T EVEN THE SAME AS THE ONE ADVERTISED!!! HOW CAN YOU PASS THIS CRAP OFF AS WHAT I PURCHASED?! Is this a joke?! I am absolutely 100% disappointed and pissed off. So, what now? Not only have I wasted my time waiting for NOTHING, but I will be expected to waste MORE of my time to ship this crap back?! If I could give ZERO stars I would. I will be requesting a refund.

I would never rate RA Salvatore less then 5 stars and def would never rate Drizzt less... these books and more importantly Drizzt (the main character) can truly take your mind off every day realities and stresses... they are fantasy in every way and are very entertaining... but I can also say they give a person validation , a person that lives an Honorable life and tries to do the best they can by their neighbors ...it also touches on important questions that a person (who desires personal growth) can read and use to broaden their own personal views and perspectives or help them start down the road to enlightenment. I have read Salvatore's, Drizzt books, more then a dozen times over the span of my adult life and every milestone in my life gives a little different perspective to what Drizzt goes through as he climbs his way out of prejudices allotted to him by goodly races and not so goodly races...and out of predicament after predicament and loss after loss... great books! if you like fantasy R.A. Salvatore is at the top of the list for exceptional character profile and concepts ...and Drizzt is just someone that you don't want to get on your bad side!

Salvatore’s Drizzt continues his quest to find himself and his true home in this classic retelling of the Hero’s Journey. True to the genre, Exile is a fast and fun read, action-packed with vivid descriptions of epic battles, strange, frightening environments, and bazaar but sympathetic creatures. I was disappointed with the lack of detail surrounding the characters’ daily lives and the more mundane aspects of their survival (What does one eat when traveling for weeks deep underground? How does one find water to drink?) but with only a mild application of suspension of disbelief, I thoroughly enjoyed the second book in Salvatore’s Legend of Drizzt.

A thrilling introduction to the true premise of Salvatore’s epic. Though not as groundbreaking as “Homeland, “Exile” fails to deliver original concepts beyond the advancement of Drizzt’s moral foundation. In fact, the best aspect of “Exile” is the conclusion that allows readers to begin “Sojourn.”
+ Morals are refined over time. Salvatore sacrifices this maturation over the decades Drizzt spent in “Homeland” and helps Drizzt refine them in “Exile.”
+ / - The Hunter is a beautiful character that deserves more respect and recognition for Drizzt’s success.
- “Exile” drags on and the competing story lines deserve more respect than what was granted to them.
- True combat is sacrificed for “near misses.” The beauty found in action are the details that can only come around when all aspects are touched upon: the footwork, environment, and blade work.

The first book was really good at setting the scene of Drizzt's childhood, training and formative years. Showing well how this led to his disgust, disillusionment and desertion of all His heritage. However this second book ramped up the action, varied emotions and character depth, more characters, more creatures and more scenes. In short Drizzt and his life settings grew and grew: I for one can't wait to see how far the expansion goes now the roof lifted and the stars are the limit !

The continuing adventures
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 5, 2013Verified Purchase
This book picks up from Homeland. Drizzt is living alone in the underdark and going a little crazy whilst his mother schemes to sacrifice him to the spider queen.
This book continues to develop the character of Drizzt and adds a couple if new characters in the form of a gnome and a hook horror who is not all he seems.
Ideally I could have done with more scenes back in the dark elf city as the rival houses scheme to take advantage of the chaos caused by Drizzt departure but that's a minor quibble.
If you liked Homeland, you'll enjoy this book too.

I like Drizzt and his friends. The threats they faced in the first book had more nuance than in Exile but the story ends with a big change for the drow. I look forward to reading the next book to see how he gets on.

I can’t put these books down, so immersive that I was in the under dark with Drizzt and his companions. Can’t wait for the next one.
