Product Description
Arlen Faber (Daniels) is the reclusive author of "Me and God," a book that has redefined spirituality for an entire generation and has been translated into over 100 languages. On the eve of the 20th anniversary of his still wildly popular book, Arlen is still sought after as the man who has all the answers. Arlen's life collides with Elizabeth (Graham), a single mom raising her seven year-old son, and Kris (Taylor Pucci), a young man fresh out of rehab who is searching for meaning. Both Elizabeth and Kris are hopeful that Arlen has the answers, but the truth is, he hasn't got a clue.
Amazon.com
Jeff Daniels shines as a know-it-all who really doesn't in The Answer Man, a 2009 romantic comedy whose predictability does very little to detract from its overall charm. Daniels plays Arlen Faber, author of Me and God, a mega-selling tome in which he asks some tough existential questions ("Does prayer work?" "I don't believe in you. Now what?"), with the answers allegedly dictated by the Almighty himself. The book led to numerous spinoffs (The Me and God Diet, anyone?), but as the 20th anniversary of its publication nears, Faber is a reclusive misanthrope who tosses fan mail aside without a glance, swears a lot, and utters pithy aphorisms that are a good deal less charitable than before ("Hell is other people"). He also has a back problem, which one day brings him to chiropractor Elizabeth (Lauren Graham), a single mom who works wonders on Arlen's spine but, amazingly, has never heard of him; she in turn buys the book at a shop owned by Kris (Lou Taylor Pucci), who's just out of alcohol rehab and about to lose his store to his many creditors. That the lives of these three, especially Arlen and Elizabeth (as well as her winning young son), will soon become intertwined is hardly a revelation; nor is the fact that Arlen, for all his wisdom, is a self-conscious doofus who can barely express his own feelings. But writer-director John Hindman's screenplay has some excellent dialogue, and while some of the situations are overly silly and facile, Hindman goes easy on the more cutesy and cloying aspects (an ongoing bit involving Ella Fitzgerald's recording of "Isn't It Romantic" is most amusing). It's not As Good as It Gets, but The Answer Man is just fine. --Sam Graham

- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2024It is a favorite movie. Glad to own it! Looking for Deborah Kerr films on DVD.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2011Spoiler Alert!
In the absence of Father Figures, heavenly or otherwise, everyone in this clever movie is desperately seeking (and decidedly not finding) a surrogate. Do we continue a fruitless search, cling to an unrequited faith and waste our lives? Or, do we take control, find our own answers and get on with it? Arlan Farber finally assumes control of his own life when he lets go. As much to himself he implores Elizabeth to tell her son the truth; the Father who promised their son he would be back, isn't coming.
The Answer Man is an allegorical masterpiece. The unsuccessful attempts to resurrect Fathers; drunk, dying, demented or dead, the inability of the masses to communicate with someone they have deified, the refusal of that deity to become involved, the child pitifully waiting for the second coming of his Father, the rabid obsession with an ambiguous Book that has all the answers, and the odd mentoring relationship Arlen Father has with Kris (Chris), all harken thematically to a suspiciously familiar dogma. In that the movie was released in 2009 it is ironic that all the obvious symbolism is still unrecognized and the movie is still simply described as a "feel good romantic comedy". I disagree with anyone who says the Answer Man doesn't provide any meaningful answers. It tells us to get off our knees, stop worshipping graven images (or a monster collection), stop lying to ourselves and our children and concentrate on life and the living. It tells us stop looking for the "Answer Man" because there isn't one.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2010I can't remember how I came across this movie, but I decided to watch it On-Demand one night, and loved it! So rarely do I find a movie that has heart and is funny too. The characters are great, and I love the message. It got me thinking that so many people are afraid and searching for answers. This movie actually provided some of the answers! As well as the idea that no one has them all. But connecting with other human beings helps us to feel less alone. I had to go out and buy it so I can watch it again!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2010Was unsure when I purchased the DVD what to expect. With real joy I can say that it was worth every cent and I have already watched it several times. The Storyline kept me interested and I loved the two main actors. (Gilmore Girls, the mother) one of my favourite series. Anway If you are unsure then try it I think most people will be very pleased, I was. With the extras along comes a commentary and I am watching it now and it sounds like they had a great time filming this movie. Enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2016A cute movie but not great. Lauren Graham is always someone to fall in love with in a movie. That being said, this movie is cute and fun. The story goes that Jeff Daniels is a once super popular writer who wrote a best seller because supposedly he talked to God, and now has an enormous following as people believe he has all the answers to life. In reality he is a recluse and a jerk and nasty to everyone he meets, until one day his back gets thrown out and he literally has to crawl through the streets to the nearest chiropractor who is none other than Lauren Graham. He falls in completely head over heels for her (and who wouldn't?), and he starts trying to be a better person around her. One of the side stories is that a bookstore owner, a recovering alcoholic, wants answers from The Answer Man, and the relationship between them is one that changes both of them. Also Heather Grahams son in the movie, is another cute side story, as more walls are broken down for Jeff Daniels as he genuinely begins to like the boy. Overall it is a nice movie, but I struggled between giving it 3 or 4 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2015The Answer Man movie is more different than usual. The man in the movie thinks and makes everyone think he is God. Since he has written so many books about that he makes lots of money. Every room in his house is marked for mail, library, etc. The main reason I bought this movie is because Kat Dennings is in it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2014Great movie! I just love this show about our society's obsession with finding answers and the tendency to idolize anyone who we think has all the answers. As well as the fact that no one really has ALL the answers and we are all amazingly human. This movie is touching and funny. One of my favorites :)
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2014this movie captured my attention one day and I had to buy it to see it many times. I enjoy the original idea of the movie and how it changes people's lives through words, the right words. Great concept. I recommend this movie to anyone, even if you are not religious this movie will touch your heart. great actors too

Pierre AubinReviewed in Canada on October 21, 20145.0 out of 5 stars A film with substance
Great story about a man searching for happiness and growth, even though he wrote a best selling novel. Jeff Daniels is excellent so are the rest of the cast. I would recommend this film to anyone who likes stories of self discovery with a bit of humour here and there.

Lauren Graham and Jeff Daniels are great, as they are in their current TV series Parenthood and The Newsroom, respectively. The film is a good simple story, enjoy.
