SPOILERS AHEAD---YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
I am sorry but I do not know why people are raving about this book or this book series for that matter. the author has a good premise a mother a HUD agent is attacked six years ago and turned into a vampire and now she's trying to balance home life work life and a marriage that seems to be falling apart how about trying to deal with the fact that she's a vampire and has to drink blood now.
good premise but the execution of this novel yes atrocious. the plot is boring once you get into the novel. there is hardly no character development whatsoever. and the character herself Samantha all she does is whine. yes the life is crappy right now because her marriage is falling apart she doesn't know what to do with her children and then come to find out her husband is having an affair and when she finally confronts him about this he doesn't even deny it he simply says you're moving out I'm staying here I'm going to marry someone else that I've fallen in love with and I'm keeping the kids and if you try to do something I have already made arrangements that documentation of your condition as a vampire will be released and you will be exposed for the monster that you are.
I am sorry but at this point any decent self-respecting vampire would have killed him. she keeps saying how she wants her kids you're not gonna take my kids for me that I will do anything to keep them safe but when he puts his foot down and says I'm going to expose you if you don't let me have this because you're freaking your monster she absolutely capitulates.
she puts up no fight whatsoever and when he says to her that you can have every other weekend for visitations and it must be supervised she comes back with a counter as if she's finally growing a spine and some gumption and says no I need to see them every weekend unsupervised and he goes no you can see them every weekend but it still must be supervised and again she capitulates absolutely agrees to everything and moves into a hotel.
and it's not like she doesn't have resources she's already met a werewolf attorney who is a very good attorney that she could use to get rid of him get rid of her husband and get the kids away from him or she could have other resources to make her husband quietly disappear so that she could have her kids she already knows that her husband has betrayed her so he's dishonest and dishonorable so he doesn't deserve any sympathy or empathy whatsoever and yet she does nothing to defend herself against him.
do not waste your time on this novel it will frustrate you the characters will aggravate you and if you're lucky enough to get through this novel and you try any of the others because I kid you not there are 19 of these novels so far you will literally start wanting to gouge your own eyes out to make the pain stop.

"I am touched by the internal conflicts that Ms. Moon struggles with as she tries to help people around her. Haven't we all done that, though? She's a robust protagonist with many dimensions to her personality." ―Amazon Reviewer
"J.R. Rain is my favorite author. He has a depth and breath of storytelling I've not seen any where else with a number of different genre." ―Amazon Reviewer
"I didn't expect to be so thrilled by this novel. It's a funny, entertaining page turner, whose witty main character, a desperate vampire housewife slash private detective, has the same quick repartee as Philip Marlowe." ―Amazon Reviewer
"There's quite an unusual and satisfying mix at work here: Moon Dance is a detective novel, and there's a real investigation to follow. It's also a kind of tale involving an involuntary superhero. On top of all that, it looks like a personal diary giving a detailed account of Sam's everyday life, her troubles and successes." ―Amazon Reviewer
"I found the point of view of a reluctant female vampire very refreshing and well done. Very original and never boring. Sink your teeth into that one." ―Amazon Reviewer

From the Inside Flap
"I enjoyed Moon Dance immensely! The protagonist, Samantha Moon, is a female vampire with a husband and children. Those predate her condition; six years ago she was attacked by a vampire and rendered into one. It is not a horror story; she buys animal blood to eat and doesn't generally prey on humans. But her husband has an increasing problem with her coldness - not of spirit, but of body. 'You sicken me and scare the hell out of me,' he tells her. 'And when I touch you it's all I can do to not gag.' She replies, 'Words every wife wants to hear.' I love this!"

My warning bells sounded, starting first as a low buzz in my ears. The buzzing is always followed by an increase in heart rhythm, a physical pounding in my chest. I knew the feeling well enough to trust it by now, and I immediately began looking for trouble. And as I rounded another corner, there it was. Three men stepped out of the shadows in front of me. I slowed, then finally stopped. Four more men stepped out from behind a raised truck parked on the street. Next to the house was an empty, dark school yard. As if reading their collective minds, I had a fleeting prognostication of my immediate future: an image of the seven men dragging me into the school yard. Then having their way with me. Then leaving me for dead. A good thing the future isn't written in stone.
I smiled at them. "Hello, boys." I could smell alcohol on their breaths and sweat on their skin. The sweat was pungent and laced with everything from fear and excitement, to hostility and sexual frustration. None of it smelled good. If mean had a scent, this would be it. A smallish Latino stepped forward. A switchblade sprang open at his side, locked into place. For my benefit, he let the faint light of the moon gleam off its polished surface. He was perhaps thirty-five and wore long denim shorts and a plaid shirt. He was surprisingly handsome for a rapist. "If you scream, I?m going to hurt you."His accent was thick. "Gee, what a romantic thing to say," I said.
"Shut up, bitch." I kept my eyes on him. I didn?t need to look at the others. I could feel them, sense them, smell them.
I said, "Now what would your mothers all think of you now? Ganging up on a single woman in the middle of the night. Tsk, tsk. Really, I think you should all be ashamed."
The little Latino looked at me blankly, then said simply: "Get her." Movement from behind. I turned, punched, extending my arm straight from my body. Jacky would have been proud. My fist caught the guy in the throat. He flopped down, gagging and holding his neck. Probably hurt like hell. I didn't care. I surveyed the others, who had all stopped in their tracks.
"So what was the plan, boys? You were all going to get a fuck in? The very definition of sloppy seconds?--hell, sloppy thirds and fourths and fifths. Then what? Slit my throat? Leave me for dead? Let some school janitor find me stuffed in a dumpster? You would deny my children their mother for one night of cheap thrills?" No one said anything. They looked toward their leader, the slick Latino with the switch. Most likely not all of them spoke English.
"I'll give you once chance to run," I said. "Before I kill all of you."

I couldn't get past page 70. Nothing interesting happened to hold my attention. She knows her husband is cheating and doesn't love her anymore but she wants to stay married. That was it for me.

I thought this book had great potential, loved the idea of a mom trying to keep her kids and marriage intact while being a vampire. The story starts six years after Samantha was attacked and turned. She gave up her FBI job and started a PI business out of her home. The problem I had was that after six years she isn’t doing a very good job of being a mom/wife or vampire. Her life is stuck at an in-between place. She’s sometimes is a bad-ass and most of the time wimp.
Also, what’s with the d**k of a husband. He’s all the sudden concerned about his kids’ safety around their mother, but not enough to come home from work/mistress and spend some time with them. I saw zero interaction between him and the kids, yet he’s going to take them away from Sam for their own safety. Oh yeah, he has video and statements he’s given to his lawyer to out her if anything happens to him. With her powers, which she demonstrates on another guy, it shouldn’t be problematic for her to get into the lawyer’s office and get that stuff. Sam goes from being very unhappy as a wife/mother but wants to stay married because she doesn’t want to lose her kids. After that happens, she’s all the sudden very happy being single with no responsibilities. Quick change that because it all happens near the end of the story.
There isn’t much action, not much real emotion shown, and no character or world building. I was hoping to give this three stars but have to settle for two.

This is a fun urban fantasy novel. It follows Sam, a former federal agent who was turned into a vampire. Now Sam doubles as a PI and a stay at home mom. Her husband is a cheating a-hole, vampire hunters are after her, and in the midst of all this she decides to take on a murder investigation.
Positives:
+ Character/Tone. Moon Dance is written in a deep POV. Sam is a fun/witty character to follow. The complexities of her being a mother make it more interesting.
+ The vampire hunter subplot.
Negatives:
- The murder plot and plot in general. Very weak, needed to be expanded upon majorly.
- Everyone immediately suspects she is a vampire- but dont believe in vampires? Like are vampires out in the open or not?
- Her weird internet relationship.

Moon Dance had an interesting concept. But the execution of it was a bit lacking.
So we have Samantha Moon. She is a wife, mother, and works for the FBI. Everything is great. Correction, everything was great, six years ago.
One night Sam gets attacked and finds herself transformed into a vampire. She does her best for six years to keep her life as normal as possible. She changes jobs & sleeps while the kids are in school.
Now she finds herself working nights as a private detective, super intuition is a vampire power. She slathers on sunscreen to take her kids to school and back. Apparently the sun doesn't cause her to combust into sudden flames, it just gives her really bad sunburn. She makes up a story about a rare skin disease, but seems to blab to everyone in her life the truth of what she is.
Sam now must adjust to her husband's wanting out of the marriage. ( He is made out to be a bad guy, but He didn't ask for the situation either). He can't stand touching her cold skin. And he is understandably scared of her, she now is very strong and drinks blood.

I had been meaning to read this series for a long time and realised this was on my kindle last night so decided to read this. I loved, Loved, Loved this book!!!! I have already got the second book as it was so so good and Unbelievably addictive!!! I couldn't stop turning pages, there are so many questions and surprises in this book that it keeps you hooked through every chapter!
I loved reading about Samantha Moon, your heart really goes out to her with everything that she has already been through and the blows just don't seem to stop for her, she finds herself in situations that are not of her making, coming from an event that was completely out of her control. I loved her inner strength to get up every day and try to carry on with her life as a wife and mother aswell as a businesswoman. As soon as Kingsley came inyo the story i wanted to know more! He is most definately an Alpha male who strugged with keepjng a big part of him secret. He is confident in who he is and what it is that he wants.
This storyline to this book was so enthralling and imaginative giving the readers the story in such vivid detail that it makes the reader feel that they are within the story. Giant rate this book highly enough and I am super excited to read the next book to find out what is going to happen next I this series!!!!

I’ve been reading quite a few crime novels recently and seem to have developed a taste for who-dunnits. When I read the blurb and spotted the strap line for Moon Dance – A Vampire for Hire Novel – I was instantly intrigued.
Moon Dance is an easy read, full of poignant mummy moments that tug on the heart strings. Samantha Moon is not your normal vampire but she has a methodical way of dealing with her unique ‘disease’. She is also a Private Detective, conveniently able to work the night shift! She is a devoted mother and sister. There is also a well-developed relationship between her and the detective running the case. She never admits what she is to anyone, although they have their suspicions, and it makes for a fun tale at times.
There is more to this book than fangs. It’s got a decent story line where Sam needs to find a potential killer and ends up discovering more about her client than she expected. There is romance and intrigue. I found it highly entertaining.
If you’re a Vampire Diaries fan then this would appeal to you. Fortunately, there are twelve books in the series so I’m all set for a reading marathon over the next few months.

It's A Marvelous Night For A Moon Dance!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 7, 2012Verified Purchase
What a great find!! And a free Amazon treasure!! Right, lets get this out in the open first!! I have been a long-time fan of crime lit - anything from blood and gore to polite who-done-its. Not read them for ages because they were getting to seem very similar. I mean, how many different ways are there to kill a person? I was getting to the point (almost) of sussing out the killer by the end of the first chapter and reading the blurb on the back of the book!! BORING!!!
So I started on romance lit, preferably paranormal - no excuse really, maybe I'm a female of 'that' age!! Anyway, got a taste for vampires - must be the blood and gore? And then this freebie turns up that combines the two genres... It could have been so bad...!!
I am so glad it's not!! Yes, it has all the ingredients of a who-done-it!! The investigator, the cop, the boss, the lonely life of a dedicated sleuth, an awkward family situation.... And yes, I guessed the killer before half way through.... But the author's tone of writing and storytelling had me totally bowled over!! Samantha Moon is the ultimate sleuth, but with the small problem of being a new vampire!! So how does she juggle family life, work and all that, with the constraints of her new 'powers'?? This book had me sniggering throughout at the tongue in cheek flavour of the writing!! All those 'what ifs' that go through your head when reading vamp books are asked and answered Mrs Moon style.
Also will they or wont they??!! The romance angle of the story asks more questions than answers!! Downloaded the next in the series to enjoy the down to earth writing tone about these paranormal and normal characters!!

Managed to pick up quite a few Sam Moon stories in a box set, they make for compelling reading it's not quite lion's n 🐯 n🐻 oh my!!! but 😈 were wolves & other spooky 😱 creatures that go bump in the night. If you're looking for vamps with a difference then go no further, Sam Moon is a loveable character with a jackass of an ex husband something we gals can relate to. 😆

Just like Miss World, I've managed to do things in reverse order. I've read JR Rain's Jim Knighthorse series before Samantha Moon's Vampire for hire series. No great problem.
The long flowing black cloak, exquisitely lined with red pure silk, the jet black hair plastered to the skull (just like Ray Reardon the snooker player), the prominent perfectly white fangs, the ink black thyrotoxic eyes and the inevitable rich red blood dripping from the chin.
FORGET All that, this is Samantha Moon, modern day vampire. JR Rain has a very clever knack of taking the stereotype and in his inimitable way turn it on its head to create something authentic and original.
I've never been into Vampires or ghouls but the Authors name (and the fact that it was free on Kindle) made me give it a try.
As many previous reviewers have already outlined very succinnctly the story line, I'm not going to repeat what has already been written.
Samantha or Sam, ('don't ever call me Sammy!') is a character that you don't simply like or tolerate, you find yourself empathising with her particularly in her 'natural' world.
To say I'm hooked would be an understatement. I'm half way through #3.
If I had to make a negative comment, it has to be directly to JR. Make your books a little longer, just 100 pages would suffice. Youv'e got the skill and talent and you are doing yourself and your readers/admirers an injusice. I'd be more than happy to pay more for a lengthier read. Think about it JR and thank you.
The long flowing black cloak, exquisitely lined with red pure silk, the jet black hair plastered to the skull (just like Ray Reardon the snooker player), the prominent perfectly white fangs, the ink black thyrotoxic eyes and the inevitable rich red blood dripping from the chin.
