Product Description
In this comedic look at real life events that are almost too bizarre to believe, reporter Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor) discovers an experimental top-secret wing of the U.S. military called the New Earth Army, trained to change the ways wars are fought through New Age psychic power. In search of his next big story, Wilton tracks down Lyn Cassady (Academy Award winner George Clooney), a shadowy figure who claims to be a member of this legion of Warrior Monks with unparalleled psychic powers who can read the enemy's thoughts, pass through walls, and even kill a goat simply by staring at it. Inspired by Jon Ronson's non-fiction bestseller of the same name, this is an eye-opening and hilarious story of the government's attempts to harness soldiers' paranormal abilities in order to combat it's enemies. Also stars Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey and Academy Award nominee Jeff Bridges.

Hard to define but easy to enjoy, The Men Who Stare at Goats is the preposterous yet more-true-than-not story of a small-town journalist named Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor) who, trying to prove himself in Iraq, stumbles upon a man named Lyn Cassady (George Clooney) who claims to be a psychic spy for the U.S. Army. With dazzling cinematic efficiency, the movie bounces back and forth between the origins of the New Earth Army--a squad of American Jedi warriors--and Bob and Lyn wandering through war-torn Iraq, pursuing a mission that turns out to have been assigned by a vision. The movie shifts from giddy comedy to melancholy as a portrait of human pettiness, manifested in military paranoia and corporate greed, unfolds. The ending loses a bit of steam, but most of The Men Who Stare at Goats is a delight--unusual yet satisfying, funny and thoughtful in turns. Jeff Bridges plays--of course--the addled yet charismatic founder of the New Earth Army, while Kevin Spacey plays--of course--the weaselly, manipulative psychic spy who turns what was meant to transform the world for the better into a mechanism for propaganda and worse. Adapted from the bestselling nonfiction book of the same title by British journalist Jon Ronson, The Men Who Stare at Goats niftily balances surface lunacy with serious undercurrents, buoyed by excellent performances from all involved. --Bret Fetzer

- Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2024Despite an all-star cast and what seems like an amazing script this movie just missed the mark almost every step of the way. It seems very Coen Bros influenced even from the opening shot which reads "This story is more true than you would ever believe" or something akin to Fargo. Also Jeff Daniels is a hippie DUDE in this movie.
The cast is great and does their jobs well. The entire movie I kept thinking that this script would be really great on paper but it just wasn't landing. I couldn't put my finger on it but the tone was never quite right and every "funny" moment was so deliberate and forced. It is trying way too hard to be quirky and funny and is a mediocre forgettable movie with nothing really memorable. It's worth watching once I guess to kill a couple hours but with this cast and script I can't believe how badly they missed the mark. I don't know quite what's wrong with it but my brain does.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2024While the book is told from a serious standpoint, the film version took a humourous look at key points within this work about covert opps and just what else our military gets up to besides honing the Manchurian Candidate with LSD & making them listen to Barney the Purple Dinosaur on an endless loop! Clooney, Bridges, Spacey and McGregor ar their best!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2012I've talked to friends who didn't care for this, but I think it's one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. I'm a big fan of George Clooney and I've seen the range of his talents many times...he's another Denzel Washington or Morgan Freeman in my book...but this is hilarious. And all the very famous supporting actors were great also....especially Kevin Spacey... and the narrator, Mr. Jedi himself, is, as always, unbelievably great and believable. Excellent value...

- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2015This movie may seem strange to some but has a lot of truth. The roles in my opinion were cast with the correct actors. It has overtones of sarcasm concerning the war in the middle east but this also has a strong thread of truth. Despite the connection with war I still find a great deal of humor in
the roles of each actor and how they relate to each other.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 29, 2020I read this over 10 years ago when working for a guy involved, as always the movie wasn’t close to book. I have bought and given to many friends. Funny, a bit disturbing, but seems accurate in portraying intent if not scientific results.

Tita Fürst - KorenReviewed in Germany on March 6, 20185.0 out of 5 stars Absurd bis in die Genialität!
Sketsche.
