Product Description
A drama centered on the efforts of John and Aileen Crowley to find a researcher who might have a cure for their two children's rare genetic disorder. Stars: Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser, Keri Russell
Amazon.com
Imagine Harrison Ford as a rogue scientist exploring not ancient artifacts of lost arks, but biochemical research to help cure rare diseases. In Extraordinary Measures, Ford manages to keep some of that wry rebellious Indiana Jones energy as he plays Dr. Robert Stonehill, a fringe researcher whose findings just might help keep alive the two children of John Crowley, played with heart and sobriety by Brendan Fraser. Extraordinary Measures is based on a true story, one chronicled in the gripping book The Cure: How a Father Raised $100 Million--and Bucked the Medical Establishment--in a Quest to Save His Children, by Wall Street Journal reporter Geeta Anand. The cast is excellent, with Ford tamping down his occasional urge to vamp for the camera, and Fraser grounded in his first true adult role. The supporting cast is also strong, including Keri Russell as Crowley's frantic wife, facing the near-certain death of both of her children; Dee Wallace, Jared Harris, and Courtney B. Vance also appear as strong supporting characters. Director Tom Vaughan switches gears from his wildly successful romp What Happens in Vegas to turn in a crisply paced and suspenseful family drama. As Crowley and Dr. Stonehill team up to raise money to support Stonehill's research, Crowley says, "Who's going to be half as motivated as the dad who's trying to save his own kids?" Extraordinary Measures brings to mind similar dramas like Lorenzo's Oil, but its heart and drive are unique to the story of the Crowleys, a very special family indeed. --A.T. Hurley

- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2024Thus is a fantastic film, describing a couple working with a doctor to get a drug approved to treat POMPE, a deadly form of MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY. Can doctors and scientists, and Big Pharma work together with the FDA, without tripping over their own egos? What happens when you move heaven and earth to raise the funds for your children's treatment, and some executive decision may make the drug unavailable to YOUR children?
As a teacher of handicapped children, as a mother and grandmother, I do object to the occasional offensive language. Hollywood is sometimes dreadfully stupid and tiresome about their language.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2024Loosely inspired by a true story, this movie shows the development of a treatment for a genetic disease propelled forward by the father of 2 children with the disease.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2024Aside from two of my favorite actors playing the lead roles, the story exemplifies the love of a father (Brendan Fraser) for his disease-disabled children and how far he would go to find a cure. Harrison Ford is the researcher whose research is the most promising for a cure, but he is moored in the monumental red tape of the FDA approval process toward finding the cure and the equal challenge of raising the funding to move forward with his research. Both characters learn alot about themselves and what they are capable of.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2010Extraordinary Measures [Blu-ray]This film was a good portrayal of two dedicated parents (especially the father) who sacrificed as much as they could of their livelihood to try to find a cure to save their children from a deadly disease (Pompey's Disease). The plot is somewhat predictable; however, unusual means are employed to achieve the end, but I'll leave that to you to see how it was done.
My special connection to this film came as a result when at my son's graduation from Neumann College (now University) at Aston, PA, in 2009, the real John Crowley (the father of the two children afflicted with Pompey's Disease) actually was present at the commencement ceremonies to receive an honorary Doctorate Degree for his efforts to help bring attention and action to find a means to stop the onslaught of Pompey's Disease and allow his children and others to at least live a better life than to slowly waste away and eventually die. His wife, Aileen, also was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in absentia, but couldn't be present because of having to stay at home to take care of their children, who require constant care.
Another reviewer felt that Harrison Ford was miscast in this film. To the vast majority of movie goers who are used to seeing this actor in swashbuckling roles, I can agree, though at some time in their careers, I feel that it is to the credit of an actor or actress if they feel that they can give a credible performance in a role different from what everyone is used to seeing them in. I feel that Harrison Ford did rather well in his role as Dr. Stonehill. However, I would have liked to have seen what the actual Dr. Stonehill looked like, or to have at least to appeared in the extras to this film and give his take on his efforts to find the means to stop the onslaught of Pompey's Disease. Nowhere do we see/hear anything about the real-life Dr. Stonehill. It is quite likely he is the recluse that the film depicted him as.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2010"I'm chasing the wind," said Crowley. A true story, then a book, now a film, is based on hope. EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES asks if it is worth risking everything for a single achievement? Love and family make risks a quick choice. For the real and movie Crowley family--it worked. For others, it might build hope. This excellent film is about defying the odds--gamble vs love--& sometimes winning. Emotional? YES! Real life is emotional.
John Crowley (Brendan Fraser), at a loss dealing with 2 children having Pompe disease (muscle illness, no Rx help, life expectancy of 9 yrs) looks to a Univ. of Nebraska Dr/researcher, Robert Stonehill (Harrison Ford) for help. This may be one of Ford's best performances: emotional, funny, tough. He plays a maverick, soured, calloused, aging, poorly funded researcher who finds his own heart through the Crowley family. Awesome, realistic, portrayals by both men. Not to be upstaged, the mom, Aileen (Keri Russell) has her own moments and makes this EXTRAORDINARY scenario very believable.
John mixes his emotional experience as a parent with the profit motivated Zymagen drug firm. Aileen is at his side-most of the time. Deleted scenes show there was additional marriage and stress conflict needing reconciled. A family film, but really aimed at adults--and it hits the bull's eye.
If nothing else, the movie empathizes with families dealing with a disease prior to a pharmaceutical breakthrough. That is a heart-wrenching emotional battle.
Bonus is Subtitles, even in the bonus stuff.
Extraordinary Measures: The Power to Overcome; 10 min. meeting the real Crowley family.
Meet John Crowley; again 10 min. of the real dad.
Deleted scenes; 10 minutes.
Great real life to screen adaptation, with a real "Yes, Virginia, there really is a Santa Claus" finale.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2023I was able to stream this movie just fine. The movie wasn’t my cup of tea but I watched it for a college class I was taking.

Spoonman42Reviewed in Canada on June 1, 20155.0 out of 5 stars A movie on Pompe Disease
This is an excellent movie. I owned it a few years ago but loaned it out and never saw it again which is why I ordered a second copy. One of the reasons why I re-ordered it is because in January of this year a fiend told me that his eldest son (who is under 10) had been diagnosed with Pompe Disease which is what this movie is all about. The movie is based on a true story and during the movie you will be close to tears one minute and the next and the next you could be laughing. In my opinion everyone playing a major role in the movie played their part very well and in doing so made the move that much more realistic. This is a terrible disease to be burdened with and it mainly attacks children.
Those of you who pray please pray for my friends son. He loves sports but because of the disease he can no longer participate in any sport. He needs our prayers.

Fanny C.Reviewed in France on June 11, 20165.0 out of 5 stars Criant de vérité
SueReviewed in the United Kingdom on February 15, 20115.0 out of 5 stars a very touching true story that touches the heart
this is truly an inspiring film about one mans struggle to find a cure for two of his children with a genetic disease that would cause their death by age nine, this film touches the heart in fact reaches right down and drags your heart onto you sleeve so you are cheering for him and is wonderful kids to find a cure in time for them, this is a true story and i would love to meet this man and shake him by the hand because the cure wouldnt just save his kids but thousands of others every year
pompe is a form of muscular dystrophy that kills children before or at age nine, its a slow steady deterotion the child losing more and more function until they cannot move and eventually die from heart failure
the fater john discovers a research doctor who has a theory on treatment, dr robert stonehill, harrison ford, who has a theory on a treatment that may help but dosnt have the funding to develop it, he and john join forces with john struggling to raise money to fund the research all the time with the imminent deaths of his own children hanging over him
im not going to tell you any more because i dont want to spoil the film for you but its truly a wonderful film and the fact its a true story only makes it more inspiring
