- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2021You will hate the United States of America and the Americans after viewing this film. It pains me to say this about the American people since one of my daughters-in-law is American and she is a wonderful, thoughtful, kind, sensitive and caring young woman.
In this film, Roy Miller, played beautifully by Matt Damon, is trying to discover the truth about WMDs and the reason why the Western powers, most notably America, invaded Iraq. He is literally given the run-around by the American government, diplomats, and military, even at points where the Americans sacrifice their own soldiers to prevent the truth from being made public. At one point, and Iraqi willing to help was literally thrown into a torture chamber, severely beaten by American thugs to inches of his life and had to be rescued by Roy as one of the few good Americans.
Roy is prevented from exposing the lie to the public, that there were no weapons of mass destruction, that the USA invaded Iraq for other selfish means, thousands of Americans (not to mention the countless innocent Iraqis murdered by Americans) died for a war that was purposefully waged on a lie. Roy attempts to navigate the American system, a system that is so corrupt that it befuddles the viewer. The evidence of no WMDs is overwhelming. It is obvious that he is being prevented from the truth. Any evidence that he tries to bring before the Pentagon is denied. His journalist contact is Lawrie Dayne, played by Amy Ryan, who is outstanding in her role, and who, at first, thinks there may be WMDs. However, she comes to believe that there were none and that Roy is telling the truth. She is able to confirm his suspicions. As Roy attempts to expose the Iraqi general who told the US government years ago that WMDs were destroyed as far back as 1991, a high-ranking American official and special forces try to eliminate them, Roy as being expendable since he's not a willing participant in hiding the truth. The corruption in the military and government is beyond belief.
I highly recommend this film. It's worth your time.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2010I went into this film with reservations, mostly on account of the average box office pull it made during its run, coupled with the many harsh reviews it received afterward (many of them coming to rest right here on Amazon). But I was set on watching this because it's Paul Greengrass. I've only seen a handful of his films, but if he's nothing else, he's honest about what he's doing. And honesty is all I saw while I was watching this film.
In many ways, GREEN ZONE could be seen as a quasi-bookend to Greengrass' highly-underrated United 93 (Widescreen Edition), though we're obviously dealing with a more fictionalized account in this instance. Our invasion of Iraq was, essentially, the epilogue to what happened on 9/11, during a time when we weren't simply focused on the ones who pulled the trigger, but anyone else who might have the distinct possibility. And that's where GREEN ZONE begins, during the opening moments of the invasion. It's shot in such a way that you could almost watch the two films together and not notice the transition. Cause and effect.
For me, UNITED 93 is a very important film. I've watched it several times, and for this movie to begin like it did was emotionally jarring.
But! Then we're off to the races with Matt Damon's character, Roy Miller: to see who can find the most WMDs. And it turns out there aren't any, but it's not like we couldn't see that plot twist coming. The action ramps up very quickly afterward, and pauses only so that you can wrap your mind around what's going on, then you're right back in the middle of it.
The thing is: you can enjoy this movie as a pure thriller. I guarantee that if you go into GREEN ZONE thinking that all you'll be getting is a couple hours of good, intense action, then you've already found it. But the movie's secondary objective is to ask a question that I'm sure many Americans have asked in the years following the invasion.
If the entire reason we went in there became a MacGuffin, then why were we there in the first place? The plot is fictional. The characters are fictional. But by the end of the movie, it ends up trying to hit you closer to home than you might have expected. Because regardless of what you believe, left or right, we paid for something in this war that we never ended up getting. And to that point, I was left just as disoriented as the main character.
But that's beside the point. Did I mention there's some great action? =D
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2024Was really impressed with this movie that told a story about weapons of mass destruction that never was found. Could teach us a lesson about going to war when the politicians tells us to when we should stop and question why. We should do our own research to see if it’s necessary.
