- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2024I was not aware of the identity of Temple Grandin until I began research for my own writing about autism. A reader pointed out that the main character in my upcoming release bore a startling resemblance to Temple Grandin, the animal behaviorist on the autism spectrum who designed more humane ways of treating livestock. I told the reader that I did not know who Grandin was, and I resolved to find out as much about her as possible. Grandin's own book, Thinking in Pictures, is a fascinating exploration of her life and visual mindset, a book I thoroughly recommend.
This HBO film about Grandin's life is thoroughly researched and authentically accurate. Claire Danes does a superb job of depicting Grandin's anxieties and determination. Temple Grandin grew up fearful of human contact and reluctant to socialize with people. She found solace on her aunt's ranch, where she empathized with the cattle, horses and other animals. School life was difficult, and she eventually attended a boarding school where she was able to ride horses and met a wonderful science teacher, (Mr. Carlock,) who helped stimulate her brain and guide her visual thinking skills through encouraging her to experiment and use her unique abilities. Later, Grandin attended college and developed methods of learning empathy through her invention of a "squeeze machine," or "Hug box" that emulated the feel of a hug, a method she had learned earlier at her aunt's ranch when watching cattle being calmed in corrals. Despite much opposition, Grandin worked to design more humane ways of moving cattle through slaughterhouses, creating a calming environment that minimized fear. Favorite Quote from the Film: "Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be".
Temple Grandin's story is fascinating, and as a member of the disabled community, (I am blind), I was thoroughly mesmerized by this film. The acting is superb from every cast member. Besides Dane's work, I also love the actress who portrayed Grandin's mother, a woman who gives her daughter multiple opportunities and encourages her to explore and adapt to new situations. She is a model for all parents of disabled individuals. I also loved the actor portraying Mr. Carlock, the science teacher. Hes is softspoken but firm, and a very encouraging man. The actress who portrayed Temple's blind roommate was excellent, too, and I loved the authentic portrayal of a blind individual in a film. It was so interesting to learn that Grandin had a blind roommate in college, and their interactions on screen made me smile.
I thoroughly recommend this tender and authentic story of an autistic individual, a woman who walked through storms with her head held high and, when doors were opened, walked through them to achieve her goals. This is a film not to be missed. We need more authentic and positive disability representation in movies, and I applaud those who made this film available to the world.
God bless you all.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2024I was really touched by how Temple overcame all the negativity and kept going forward. I cried a lot (good tears). I hope 100% of cattle would be handled humanely with her designs. It's a shame that all the slaughter houses aren't already converted over
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2024I liked how Temple, with the constant support of her mother obviously, was able to overcome her disability. Proof of what I always knew growing up with a disabled neighborhood friend - treat someone like they have a disadvantage and they will grow up believing it. Don't, and they will overcome it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2024This movie is so inspiring. I watched it several times. It gives hope and inspiration to anyone who is afraid to take chances in life or to anyone with a disability that feels like giving up because things get tough. It is a real eye opener. Love this movie. I can watch it again and again.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2024My wife rented this. As a farm kid and simply being a woman, she found it interesting. Some of the 'doors' Temple goes through was relatable.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2024This is a must-see true story. Acting is amazing. True story is inspirational, educational, and heart touching. Learned a lot about autism and also the genius that autistic people have. Cannot recommend this movie enough.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2024This is one of the best movies ever. The triumph of the human spirit, never giving up, changing the world.

Santiago SoutoReviewed in Spain on January 13, 20165.0 out of 5 stars Película de múltiples utilidades
