I enjoyed this book so much! Rod Dreher is such a great writer. Even though the subject matter, rapidly accelerating cultural change, can be depressing, his books and articles leave me feeling better. His description of those of us who have been on a similar journey as his, who don't fit into the `right or left' label - politically or socially is totally accurate. Crunchy Cons has to be the perfect name for us. He has defined us, knows who we are, and we feel like we know him after reading this book and also his beautiful book, The Little Way of Ruthie Leming. Before reading this book, my husband and I couldn't figure out where we fit; we sometimes felt uncomfortable with Republican stands on issues, but we were generally conservative and traditionalist - definitely not social liberals. No category applied to us until now. Mr. Dreher has offered up an option. His book has helped me make my way through this political and spiritual wilderness that is the current culture. As traditional values as we have known them are being attacked and shattered daily, it is a comfort to read a book full of wisdom, depth and substance. Even if we can't stop what is going on in our world, it helps to know there are people of similar mind. The book is an inspiration. Even after a dose of the discouraging nightly news, this man's words of faith, family and tradition can perk me up and give me some hope. I read the Kindle version last year but immediately knew I had to have a paper copy of this great this little book. Mine is marked and highlighted like a college textbook or a Bible. I love Rod Dreher's writing and would highly recommend any book he writes.
At times I felt like I was looking at a mirror image of my thoughts, beliefs, and ideas. Other times I felt like I was reading some twisted neo-hippy malarkey. But I think that the author and people he quotes might be on to something. The bottom line is Love, for family, friends, neighbors, community, etc. The kind of love that Jesus teaches about throughout the Bible.
As heavy as some of the thoughts might be which are presented in this book, Rod Dreher has a way of making it fun to read. I recommended it to my family and friends. Can't say I agree 100% but can stand with Mr. Dreher on the majority of his thoughts and ideals.
Finally I found a book that gives voice to what I believe. Life is so much more entwined than just a plain left-right or liberal-conservative. Ideology alone leads to frustration and sterility.
This was an interesting and thought provocative book. The author makes good points about cherishing the abiding things in life. It would be interesting to see how his views have changed since publication.
This original, lively, and entertaining book is still worth your time and attention. Rod Dreher is one of our country's most unique and original thinkers and you would be well-served to pay attention to what he has to say--both in this book and on his popular blog.
