Product Description

From hit making producer Irwin Allen (The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno) comes the triumphant return of the greatest adventurer of all (by way of Jules Verne)! Awakened from a 100-year cryogenic freeze, the legendary Captain Nemo (Academy Award winner* Jose Ferrer) pursues a mad scientist (Burgess Meredith) who threatens to destroy Washington unless he's paid a billion dollars in gold. Co-written by Psycho's Robert Bloch, The Amazing Captain Nemo was originally conceived as a three-part pilot for a weekly TV series. Combining action, heroics and Emmy -nominated special effects, The Amazing Captain Nemo is seagoing action and excitement that's simply under-and-out of this world!

Two divers "accidently" awaken Captain Nemo when they discover the Nautilus at the bottom of the sea. Nemo pops out of a smoky tube demanding explanations. Instead, "I thought you were a fictional character!" Apparently, Jules Verne was a biographer. Who knew!?

Yes, it's a daffy concept not well executed, but I liked it anyway. At least Jose Ferrer (Captain Nemo) and Burgess Meredith (the EVIL Prof. Waldo Cunningham) looked like they were having great fun with the less than sterling material (it took 7 writers to produce this!? Not the least of which was Robert Bloch); hardly worth the bragging rights. It definitely feels like a pilot for a proposed TV series; it's clumsily divided into 3 episodes. In the first part, Nemo is awakened and must help the US deal with loony Waldo (a scheme involving billions of dollars or else Washington DC will be blown up). The second part is the return of Waldo and an evil doctor (played by Mel Ferrer) who is helping him to destroy the Nautilus. The final episode involves a quick trip to Atlantis where Waldo is again up to no good. Special guest star Horst Buchholz plays King Tibor. One of his body guards, Bork, is played by General Hospital star Anthony Geary.

It doesn't look as if a big budget went into this, most of the underwater sequences (of which there are many) look as if they were shot in a dirty fish tank. I thought the `psychic' robot was amusing. I bought this for sentimental reasons: it's a product of its time, I liked the actors involved, and I wanted it for my Irwin Allen collection. People expecting something more polished should look elsewhere. Otherwise, enjoy.

This film took me right back to my early teenage years in the 1970's when this was pretty big stuff... If that is the type of film you are searching for, then this one will do nicely!

There are a few notable things about this film to me. Aside from the "dirty fish tank" visual one gets and which has been accurately described by another reviewer already, the way Jose Ferrer plays Nemo is interesting... It is really a total departure of the character from prior films which showed Nemo as stand offish and not really fond of humankind to begin with, hardly a hero type. In this one, Nemo is quite outgoing and ready to help save the world instead of destroy it. Nonetheless, Jose Ferrer's interpretation of the character is enjoyable and allows Burgess Meredith to play the "pay me One Billion in Gold Bullion or I will blow up the world" villain as the mad Professor Cunningham. For me, Meredith is great in this role and steals the show with his ever frequent calls to "Fire Delta Beam".

The only knocks I have on the film is that the creatures/robots who aid Professor Cunningham are never sufficiently explained. (where do they come from? are they robots or true aliens? what is their beef?) Also, the "suspended animation" process in most films is very dramatic with significant story buildup but in this one, they do it all in about 30 seconds with Nemo ready and raring to go... I guess they had to get going fast as the movie was a three part TV Story at only 90 Minutes in total. Also, they bit off a bit more than they could chew perhaps by adding a sub-plot on finding the Lost City of Atlantis (which is alive and well) at the final third of the movie.

70's stalwart, the yummy Linda Day George provides the female lead in the story but the rest of the cast is pretty much forgettable.

Despite some criticisms, it was enjoyable overall and a fast past ninety minutes of action. It did what it set out to do for me, which was bring me back to 1978!

Once again, nothing to do with what Jules Verne wrote, which is so typical of the movies nowadays. I haven't finished watching it yet, but so far so good. It is decent family fare, no gore, sex or filthy language of which Hell-lywood needs nowadays. This is one of those DVDs that might not play on any devices that can record, only on DVD PLAYERS, so if you don't have a player: don't buy. The DVD quality is good with no extras. I gave this only four stars as it is only using the name of Jules Verne to make money at his expense. +JMJ+

This movie was not to bad I will watch again. The movie has good actors and adventure is good. The special affects I laughed because of the submarine was a model and you could see the way the model moved that it was fake, but all in all I still liked this movie I would say this movie is a family movie so everyone in the family could enjoy. I rated a 4 because of the story line it was fun to watch.
