Saving Freedom: We Can Stop America's Slide into Socialism Hardcover

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 88 ratings

The United States—the world’s great bastion of freedom—is sliding toward socialism. Recent high-profile bailouts show the walls between government and the private sector are getting thinner each day. Federal control now extends in various ways to education, healthcare, financial markets, real estate, businesses, and religion. And as out-of-control government spending and debt increase accordingly, America is drained of the economic and political strength its people fought and worked so hard to achieve. But it isn’t too late to save the land of the free. Saving Freedom is Senator Jim DeMint’s firsthand account of the unsettling socialist shift—behind-the-scenes actions in Congress that are changing the character of our nation. He illuminates key principles of freedom and how they are being compromised by big government. More important, DeMint lays out a complete action plan to reclaim America’s freedom based on legislation that would reduce debt, fix Social Security, and provide a tax credit for every family to buy health insurance. The plan also emphasizes reversing America’s cultural decline by restoring a strong spirit of God and country.

U.S. Senator DeMint's book is surprisingly good. It makes the reader believe that maybe some politicians in Washington D.C. actually see the dangers ahead as the current administration rushes the nation toward full-fledged Socialism. The American public is being given the proverbial "bums rush" out the door of freedom into the slavery of a socialist, fascist "Big Brother" state. Most American voters don't even realize it because they don't understand the terms or the concepts. The good senator is a master of explaining the problem. He makes wonderful use of metaphors in explaining how the "Siren Song of Socialism" works. His "Fox and the Gingerbread Man" is a wonderful way of explaining the dangers of gradually giving up one's freedom to the crafty fox or the wolf in sheep's clothing. He also tells stories about his own youth and uses favorite incidents from the Andy Griffith Show to explain some of his own beliefs. While this approach may seem corny to many readers, it actually works very well. It makes the difficult easy to explain.
It was interesting to read about a small businessman who didn't consider running for political office until age 47 after he'd built a business and life in the real world where he describes the public as looking at two kinds of people--"normal people" and a different breed known as "politicians." Most people had little respect for the latter. It was rare to find a "statesman" among the breed. Before he entered the political stage, he had spent years raising his four kids while his wife remained a "stay at home mom" who filled her free time volunteering for the school board, etc. DeMint also spent considerable time volunteering for his church and other charitable organizations such as the Rotary Club. He learned early that some of the very problems he and his wife were working to solve through their charities were either government caused or greatly aggravated by government policies. He recalls being surprised at this discovery.
While there happen to be several other current books on this subject including "Catastrophe", "Common Sense", and "Liberty and Tyranny" by Mark R. Levin, this one is different from the others. First of all it's written by a U.S. Senator with all the experience and the insider understanding of a one of our lawmakers. He admits there is plenty of blame for the current government problems. Both political parties are guilty. They all helped create the bureaucracy that has turned into an insatiable monster that must constantly expand in order to survive. That perspective adds great weight to his thoughts. It also gives the reader a little hope that somebody inside Congress understands the problems we are facing. That is comforting because DeMint does an unusually good job of describing the "Siren Song of Socialism." As in the ancient myth, anyone who follows the irresistible call of the Sirens to their Utopian Island will be devoured. The promises of a Paradise on Earth, simply persuade the unsuspecting victims to drop their guard, check their common sense and freedoms at the door, and follow the blinding light of hope into the hidden abyss of "broken promises". Like a fifth or sixth marriage, experience is trumped by hope.
DeMint does a superb job of explaining why Socialism, Collectivism and Utopia is so irresistible. The fact that Socialism has never worked anywhere on the planet throughout all of history is cleverly disguised as a promised new suit of lifetime security, that in fact will eventually turn out to resemble the Emperor's Clothes that weren't. It seems a universal human desire to always "be taken care of." The great Intellectuals of 19th century New England attempted to form and live in a socialist utopia that soon foundered and disbanded. Most of the world is currently running away from Socialism as the USA runs full-speed ahead toward the failed philosophy. Many people say that the nation is not headed for socialism as can be noted in some of the critical reader reviews of this book. People who can't see that the nation is slipping into socialism either don't understand the philosophy or are suffering from a bad case of either naivety or denial. They have forgotten the age old sage wisdom that "if it sounds too good to be true, it isn't true."
I don't feel I've even begun to do justice to this excellent book. You'll have to read it yourself to learn the definition of socialism, the history of it, the results of it or the cure for it. This book will change your life.

This book is well-documented and well-written. Jim Demint dares to tell where we got off the track and what we need to do. He starts with the simple analogy using a childhood favorite--The Gingerbread Man. He cleverly continues using stories and analogies to illustrate his points.

I recommend this book to anyone who is concerned about the direction of this country and desires us to return to the principles which have made this country the envy of the world. He puts the blame on Democrats; however, he does not let the Republicans off the hook for their part in it. He paints an accurate picture of where we use to be and where we are now as well as what we can do to change it.

The author writes as if he has been doing this all his life. I'm impressed with his literary skill and honest candor. This is the best book I've read in years. I bought it for each of my sons. I even quoted him in my own book written about freedom.

I bought this book because I was interested in the writer and what he believes. I have learned you can find out a lot about an individual by the way he writes and what he writes about. Since we have an election coming up next year and man seems to possibly be a contender I wanted to learn more about him. I have only read half the book to this point but so far I find it well worth the money and time I have spent with the book.

I'd had never heard of Jim Demint until his appearance on Minnesota Public Radio debating the 'health care crisis'. I, for the very first time in a long time, found myself agreeing with more that he said than not. Everything sounded so logical and well thought out. At the end of the interview, this book was hawked.

I don't like reading, and I definitely have never felt compelled to read anyone's political perspective. Until I listened to Jim on the radio. He spoke from the heart, from a set of beliefs he obviously holds dear. I fought the urge to buy the book for about 2 weeks. I then caved and bought it from Amazon.

I am very pleased I decided to purchase this book. It was a well thought out 'story' about what he believes ails this country and what we, as citizens, must do to bring the ship around. Now, I don't agree with everything, but I didn't expect to. I wanted to read about his thoughts on the subject. Once again, I found myself nodding a lot more than shrugging. His story telling method made this an easy read. I've suggested it to more than 10 family and friends already. I don't know how many have gone out and bought the book, but I do know that three members of my family keep asking me about him and his perspective.

Very good book, coming from someone that has read probably 2 books in the past 10 years! I told you, I do enough reading at work, I don't like to read books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Freedom can be saved.

Senator Jim DeMint tells the grim story of how freedom has declined in the United States over the years - with the growth of government under Republican Presidents such as George W. Bush (and a weak and, sometimes corrupt, Republican leadership in Congress), as well as Democrats. Senator DeMint also makes clear that what is left of freedom now faces a attack from the Administration of President Barack Obama - an Administration dominated (from the President on down) by fanatical collectivists who will not tolerate Civil Society independent of politics.

However, at bottom, this is a hopeful book. It shows how people can oppose the political establishment and the disinformation (and direct lies) of the education system and the "mainstream media" and both save what freedom remains - and advance and reclaim lost freedom. The fall of the Berlin Wall twenty years ago shows that the victory of collectivism is not inevitable - it is only inveitable if people do nothing to oppose it.

The practical plans the book contains (starting from reality, from the present position, not from where free market people would like the world to be in theory) are very useful, as are the details of organizations and sources of news and current affairs information. Get informed and fight (or rather WORK) back against the tide of ever bigger government, that is the cause of most of the problems it claims to be the cure of, - that is the message of this book.
