[3.5 stars]. Old Dogs is a mix of Disney-style kid's movie and a bizarre Robin Williams comedy. On the one hand, it is funny at times. It executes classic jokes like the golfer hitting a bystander in the groins fairly well. On the other hand, a lot of the jokes were clearly aimed at a pretty young and immature audience, like the gorilla hugging Seth Green. I don't mind kid-friendly humor, and in fact found this a lot better than the vulgar comedies aimed at teens. However, Old Dogs seems to be trying to appeal to both kids and adults, but I don't think it does.

I think part of the reason is the casting. Again, here I had mixed feelings. The acting was generally was very good for this type of movie. In addition to Robin Williams and John Travolta, it also included Seth Green, Kelly Preston, Matt Dillon, Bernie Mac, and Lori Laughlin (the little girl, Travolta's daughter, was also adorable). Yet, it might have been a bit too crowded. Rather than falling in love with the kids, I felt like I barely got to know them. At times, Travolta and Williams seemed to get a good dynamic, but it just wasn't enough.

Overall, this will probably be a satisfying comedy for "family nights." It's funny enough for parents to enjoy, but probably won't be particularly memorable. I was disappointed though that it wasn't better, especially given the great comedic talent in the cast. I'd be willing to give an Old Dogs sequel a try with the same cast, assuming the writers and directors really put some thought into coming up with a funny script.

This is a movie with the feel of an old fashion Disney movie, but designed for the modern expanded definition of family. Seven years ago Robin Williams got divorced. His buddy, John Travolta takes him to South Beach where Williams meets a girl, gets drunk, gets married, then has it annulled. However Williams still has feelings for his one night wife and after 7 years writes her a letter.

They meet and he finds out he is the father of her two children. Through a series of circumstances, Williams agrees to watch his estranged kids for 2 weeks. Travolta aids Williams as they attempt to play dad with disastrous results. The jokes are a bit trite and much of the humor is slap stick. Most adults will find something to enjoy in the film while they watch it with their kids. The theme of the movie is that friends, love, and family are the most important things in life and together we can work through anything.

Disney has put out some good movies, and some stinkers. This movie fits firmly in the latter category. John Travolta and Robin Williams phone in their performances in this uneven mix of slapstick and schmaltz. John Travolta and Robin Williams play business partners who run a sports marketing firm, but when Robin Williams' character finds out he has children, he and Travolta have to play dad for a couple of weeks while the mother serves a little time in jail. Nothing about the plot was fresh or interesting although, to Disney's credit, they really don't deal with much outside of formula filmmaking anyway. There were a couple of visual gags that were legitimately funny...the first time around. But then they just keep using the same jokes over and over again. Kids might enjoy adults getting hit repeatedly in the groin, but not me. And then to make matters worse, there's some humor insinuating that the main characters are gay, which will go right over children's heads. Ultimately, this film is aimed at families with young children, but the humor is hackneyed at best and I don't see parents enjoying it too much. The message about the importance of family is admirable, but Disney has done much better than this in the past. Ultimately, this won't go down in the annals of Disney history as even a good film, and it certainly is one of the worst films that John Travolta and Robin Williams have ever made. Some old dogs just need to be put to sleep.

Old Dogs is a hilarious family comedy movie. Probably Robin Williams' favorite movie of mine next to Jumanji, and John Travolta is pretty hilarious as well. I definitely recommend anybody who likes either of these 2 actors that you buy this film.

Robin Williams back to his funny, relatively clean humor. If you liked RV you will love this. This is a instant classic for the whole family. It is relatively clean (imagine that) and drop dead Hilarious. Go Robin Go!!

I bought this for really cheap during a black friday sale. It's funnier than I remember from the first time I watched it years ago. Of course I'm a huge John Travolta fan, he's been my fav actor since the first time I saw grease as a kid. I'm also a huge Robin williams fan. I thought they acted well off each other. and the kids are pretty good too (the girl is john travolta's daughter)

This movie was very funny from beginning to end. I am a big fan of both Robin Williams and John Travolta. I enjoyed this mostly because I was able to watch this movie as a family without worrying about scenes on the risque' side. There was no profanity or sexual content. It was good, clean, comedy.
