Flawless Execution: Use the Techniques and Systems of America's Fighter Pilots to Perform at your Peak and Win Battles in the Business World Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 166 ratings

Your business can take a lesson from the American military's fighter pilots. At Mach 2, the instrument panel of an F-15 is screaming out information, the horizon is a blur, the wingman is occupied, the jet is hanging on the edge -- and yet fighter pilots routinely handle the stress. It's not much different in today's unforgiving business world. One slipup and your company is bankrupt before your employees know what hit them.

What works on the squadron level for F-15 pilots will also work for your marketing team, sales force, or research and development group. By analyzing the work environment and attacking its centers of gravity in parallel, you'll begin to utilize the Plan-Brief-Execute-Debrief-Win cycle that will rapidly impact your business's future success. U.S. fighter squadrons have been using this program for nearly fifty years to reduce their mistake rate, cut casualties and equipment losses, and rack up an envious victory record. Now, with Flawless Execution, your business can too.

James D. ‘Murph’ Murphy, the Founder & CEO of Afterburner, Inc., has a unique and powerful mix of leadership skills in both the military and business worlds. Murph joined the U.S. Air Force where he learned to fly the F-15. He logged over 1,200 hours as an instructor pilot in the F-15 and accumulated over 3,200 hours of flight time in other high-performance aircraft. As the 116th Fighter Wing's Chief of Training for the Georgia Air National Guard, Murph's job was to keep 42 combat-trained fighter pilots ready to deploy worldwide within 72 hours. As a flight leader, he flew missions to Central America, Asia, Central Europe and the Middle East.

Prior to his service in the U.S. Air Force, Murph had a successful career in imaging equipment sales, where he helped increase his company's sales by 500%. Years later, he became Director of Sales for a small paint company. The concepts he developed and utilized in business and the U.S. Air Force would become known as Flawless Execution®. Applying Flawless Execution’s continuous cycle of planning, briefing, executing, and debriefing, he increased his new employer’s sales from $5 million to $52 million per year. Realizing that all companies and organizations could benefit from these same concepts, Murph started Afterburner Incorporated in early 1996.

Through his leadership, Afterburner landed on Inc. Magazine's "Inc. 500 List" twice. Murph has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, Inc. Magazine, Newsweek, Meetings & Conventions Magazine and has appeared on CNN, Fox News, and Bloomberg News. He was also named as one of Atlanta's top 50 entrepreneurs by Catalyst Magazine. To date, the Afterburner team of elite military professionals has led over 1 million executives, sales professionals, and business people from every industry through Afterburner's Flawless Execution Model℠, and its unique, high-energy programs.

Murph and Afterburner have shared the podium with notable speakers like Bill Clinton, Condoleezza Rice, Marcus Buckingham, Colin Powell, J.W. Marriott Sr. and Terry Bradshaw. Murph serves as a panel member of the League of Extraordinary Minds with business and self-improvement gurus such as Tony Robbins and Stephen Covey. He is the author of the groundbreaking books Business Is Combat and Flawless Execution through Harper Collins publishing and has spoken at many of the world's most notable business schools to include Harvard, Wharton, Cornell, Emory, Duke and Fudan University in Shanghai, China.

It is a great comparison between the rigors of the planning process of a fighter pilot and business owners.

Gave the book as a gift. I read the book previously and there are excellent points on how the Air Force works towards process improvement.

This book is an excellent recap of military strategy and tactic turned civilian. Murphy presents clear ideas on how these processes have been adapted for use in corporate life.
Every CEO needs to read this book and make it required reading for his/her executives. The book is an easy read and gives multiple examples of how the processes can and are being used by Fortune 500 companies.

This is a must read for any entrepreneur, CEO, Operations Manager or nearly anyone who has too many things to do and not enough time (task saturated). It taps into the unique experience of fighter pilots who are the most task saturated people in the world where if they drop any ball most probably die. So the stakes are pretty high to ensure everything not only gets done, but at a very high standard. Combine that with strategies around organization and execution of projects/missions and there is a lot here that can be implemented into any company.

I found this book a refreshing read, building on previous works in the field of management by the author.

The overlaying of the principals and process of military preparation and execution of assignments does have application in the business world. Maybe not completely - but significantly.

Reading this book allowed me to reflect on processes and effectiveness in a professional services firm which I head, and make a couple of worthwhile adjustments which we have carried forward with success.

I always think if you can take just a couple of things from a business book and apply those over the long term you have done well. I believe there are a number of such lessons and approaches in this text that have real world business application.

Well done to the authors.

This book teaches you a step by step system on how to learn from experiences and pass this knowledge on to your team. It can easily be used by a one man company as well. Can't say enough great things about this company. Read this book and then use it. Afterburner.com is amazing.
