Made my old laptop lightening fast

Test Laptop - Dell Latitude D630 - 2.0GHz core 2 duo with 4GB ram
I installed this drive and then installed Windows XP pro. When complete I then installed Windows 7 home premium and set laptop up as a dual boot system. I then tested both by booting into Windows XP and Windows 7. I then ran every update and every service pack on both Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7 SP1. I installed antivirus, adobe reader, Microsoft Office 2007, Firefox 5.0, etc. When all was perfect with both operating systems I pulled out he HD and cloned it over to a brand new standard SATA drive. Then came the fun of testing both HD's and OS's for boot times, etc.

Pros: $2 per GB is a great price. Drive will breathe new life into ANY PC. Easy to install, lots of fun. Drive has NEVER locked up for me, not with hibernation, sleep mode anything.
Cons: $2 per GB is a lot higher than a standard SATA drive. Firmware was hard to locate, although easy to install.

All of this was with original firmware 001, I did update (after all testing) to 002 but nothing changed HD runs solid and sleeps/hibernates, etc. runs like a dream with 0 issues for me. It has never locked up. I cannot imagine how fast this drive would be in a new PC or laptop with an i7 CPU and more ram. Sadly my laptop is now so fast there is no way that I can justify replacing anytime soon. Buy this drive you will not be sorry.

Samsung gets all the press nowadays because their SSD's are the highest performing... but I am in IT and I buy these because they are a good value, and reliable. The Crucial/Micron brand SSD's have been made in the same factory, and they both offer rudimentary power protection. This doesn't protect writes that were being made when you lost power, but it does offer some protection on the rest of the data. Other brands without power protection can suffer major file system damage if power fails during use. I put these in OEM laptops (and MX200's before this one), where people run out of batteries, and I've yet to have a serious failures.

I installed this in my wife's MacBook Pro (mid 2012; non-retina; MacBookPro 9,2) and the installation process could not be more of a breeze. Once the new drive was in, I did a fresh install of OS X 10.10 from USB stick. Then restored user accounts, apps, etc, from the HD just removed from the Mac, attached with this cable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HJZJI84/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (rather than using time machine backup). Since I was already opening the computer, I also upgraded the memory to 8 GB using this 'kit:' http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005LDLVAO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Once the OS was installed and all data transferred, the difference in boot time, application launch time, and overall performance was nothing short of dramatic. MS Word now opens instantaneously. Night and day. I'm sure extra memory is not hurting, either, with things like running multiple apps at the same time and application switching. After the upgrade, it feels like a brand new computer. I was originally waiting to upgrade the 500 GB hard drive that come with the Mac once prices of SSD drop enough to make a 1TB a bit more economical, but I'm really glad I did not wait. The expected longevity/endurance of Samsung's "3D" technology along with the price point of just just over $200 (with tax) were the 2 key deciding factors (expected performacne gains being a given). Could not be happier. Will be interesting to see if there is any noticeable improvement in battery life and how the drive performs after a year or so (given TRIM is not permitted by Apple on third-party SSDs). BTW - the drive itself looks really good. I realize the case is superfluous and rather irrelevant in an internal SSD (it will never be seen again after re-inserting the back cover), but once installed amid the tidy MacBook innards, the drive looks perfectly at home, actually matching the other components in terms of aesthetics. NOTE: once your drive is installed and configured in your Mac, restart holding option command r p to make your computer stop looking for the old boot drive and start up right away (google 'option command r p' for details). From pressing the start button to fully loaded desktop, this PowerBook now takes just under 20 seconds.

I was a little bit skeptical about the whole SSD thing, but I got a refurbished laptop that is a few years old. It has a 2 GHz Core2Duo and 4 GB of RAM, so it's terribly slow, but every little bit helps. I had heard that SSDs are the way to go, but given their small size and high cost, I didn't want to plunk down the cash a tiny expensive hard drive only to be disappointed. Well, this SSD is affordable and I could not believe how much faster it has made my computer! It used to take about 2:30 to boot and now it boots in just over 30 seconds! Apps open instantly. It feels like a whole computer. Can't wait to see what kind of effect it will have on battery life.

Great with a few caveats

If I could give this item 4.5 stars I would. Performance wise, it functions terrifically. It's ridiculously fast, and it's substantially lighter than a spinning HDD. I can actually feel the weight difference in my lenovo X220 laptop (your mileage may vary). My only complaint is that installation was not as smooth as it could be. My laptop can only accept 7mm high drives in the slot. The crucial drive can be modified to fit by removing the black plastic spacer band. I wish they had put this on the outside of the case like the Intel X25m. It was simple to unscrew the case and remove the spacer, but then the screws are too long. I shortened mine by cutting them with wire cutters. The screw metal was soft and this was easy to do, but it probably ruined any chance of returning the drive and it probably voided my warranty.
The included Apricorn drive imaging software worked well. I have read horror stories of corrupted drives from other users who have used it. Maybe this latest version works better. I did have problems with some corrupted files on the SSD after I booted it. I simply ran a chkdsk and repaired or deleted the corrupt files. I was using the live version of Apricorn's imaging software and not the bootable CD. In hindsight I probably should have booted from the live CD to guarantee no locked files or changed files.
Once I removed the spacer the drive fit fine. It booted on the first try, however then the real work began. Thinkpads run a lot of proprietary system software. Here is the list of changes I made.
* Turned off the airbag service and software (why lock the drive when it drops, nothing is moving)
* Turned off the automatic defrag service
* Turned off the drive sleep service in power management
Things were working well but, Windows 7 would lock up for a minute or so shortly after logging in. Event Viewer logs show an iaStor error that said "The device, \Device\Ide\iaStor0, did not respond within the timeout period." After much forum searching I had to make a registry key entry HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\iaStor\Parameters\Port0
under which I had to make the following three DWORD values:
DIPM = 0
LPM = 0
LPMSTATE = 0
This fixed the freezing. I was disappointed that Crucial's documentation and website had no helpful information for all the issues I had with installing the M4. Thus the four star rating. Other than that it's been a pleasurable world of 25 second boot times.
