Kassia is a sixteen year old girl in a school for the supernatural gifted. She can cause pain or kill simply with her mind. Her best friend Mira is the only one immune to her. She hadn't killed anyone, until two men attacked her best friend. Some new kids were transferred to the school, one named Daxton who quickly became her boyfriend.
But things get ugly when demons come for Kessia. Along with her friends, she goes on the run to protect the school. One of her friends can see the future, one can read minds. Together they traverse the state's looking for a shaman. And they find her with the help of the other one who can talk to animals. Daxton can transport a person to another reality mentally, not physically.
Join them as they find the true mission they are to undertake. It's a heartwarming story even with the kids of one of them. I enjoyed reading this book.

There's an assault planned on the school she attends for special students. The end Kassia is a girl that has the power to kill hundreds, perhaps thousands at a time. Several others are assigned to help her keep her powers in check, but then those powers are needed to conquer the typical I-want-the-world-under-my-control baddie.
scene reminds me of the last episode of Buffy. Bows and arrows, martial arts, etc. No one thinks of getting their hands on some actual weaponry, and with their power of compulsion, plus probably some ties with those in power, they could have had lots of weapons. The attack time was relatively known, the attack pattern was known, the attackers were known, and so everyone defends themselves with bows and arrows, etc. No involving the government (the creatures posed a threat to the entire Earth etc.)
To me this is very unrealistic. In a situation like this every bit of power that could be arrayed against the evil being and his minions should have been called into action. Plus, the final battle between Kassia and the evil one is over so fast it's almost unbelievable.
Maybe 80% of the book was okay, but the rest was not.

There was teen angst, demon action, sweet romance, friendships, and some hard truths. I'm pretty sure that a lot of young readers will enjoy it.
As an adult, I found some issues. One of the girls had the gift of compulsion--and yet she couldn't save herself when she was attacked. Adults at a Gifted School sent out 5 kids to face Demons alone, without any adult supervision. There was a little too much instant love and crying jags. When asked what the Demon Boss told her, the Heroine left out some important information. The dialogue was sometimes awkward. The descriptions of the Demons was repetitious. The big battle at the end seemed rushed.
In conclusion, it wasn't bad, and a young reader might enjoy it. I think it had possibilities, but didn't quite get there.

Kassia has a special gift: she can kill people with her mind. While she tries to accept the most feared gift, Kassia finds herself on the run with her close friends that are also gifted in other ways. Kassia is wanted by both good and bad as her gift can be used to kill any opponent. Kassia is left with a choice- does she want to help good or evil.
While there is a love story within the plot, I found it hard to understand. The characters meet and are instantly together. It was kind of weird. In another part of the story, a character is raped and then there is very little said about it, just a thought here and there. Even the sacrifice confused me. It seemed a little like a deus ex machina. Side plots seemed a bit thrown in for shock value or to keep the main plot going but without any warning or explanation before or after.
this was a well written story. I found that beyond having some problems with side plots, the main plot and action continued well through the book and I would recommend it for 99cents

This is more a story about teenage friendships and choices than science fiction/fantasy. It is set in a world of demons and paranormal teens. Unlike Harry Potter or Hunger Games, we don't really get a feel of the school or the world and the battles are not detailed. But, the emotions and thoughts of the characters are presented in a well scripted manner so the reader gets insight into the friendships, fears, joys, and sacrifices giving rise to the ultimate decisions of the main characters.
It is not an outstandingly written book, but it is solid. I would put the characters and story at the level of a 14 year old read except the author does raise issues such as rape and murder in the defense of others. Depending on your child's maturity, some issues such as these some parents may want to discuss if giving this as a recommended read to a young teen. It would not be my first choice as a gift in this genre (I preferred mythos academy) but for an avid young reader I would include this series on the list of to read.

I really enjoyed this book and it didn't take me very long to finish it. I loved all the characters and I would definitely recommend it to a friend. Honestly, I think this is the best book I've read. I loved how the characters felt so strongly for each other especially Mira and Daxton did for Kassia. I also liked the demons and how the author managed to make them so realistic. I LOVE THIS BOOK
