- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2012Words are just tumbling over themselves in my head because I don't know just how exactly to tell you how very excited I am to find this little, simple gadget! OMG! It truly is so easy, so fun, and so FAST, and so affordable, it's practically ridiculous!
We're all learning how important it is to eat fermented, cultured, probiotic foods (and beverages) and how healthy it is..about the importance of eating raw (organic) vegetables and getting a good variety every day, well here's the SOLUTION!
I know I probably sound like an infomercial, but I can't help it. If I could quit my job and make a living selling and demo-ing these, I would - seriously.
You simply make a brine of celtic or himalayan salt water; fill a canning jar with whatever you would like (they give you some starter recipes) and pour the water over it. Put the lid on, and sit in a cool, room-temperature area for 4 days. That's it! And four days later, I had pickled veggies that were so delicious that I ate the whole quart in one day!
This is perfect to do with kids - your kids or grandkids; or as a school project together. A great way for children to be involved in a simple and creative activity that brings much reward.
It's fun, fast and healthy. It makes a great snack to have on hand in the fridge and makes the dollar stretch (which we all need right now) and will keep a long time in the fridge.
Check out the gallery (99..) on the Perfect Pickler website as the ideas are endless. When you use the probiotic vegetables to put into another recipe, you have just increased the health benefits of that recipe!
As I seriously would like to get probably 10 more, I'm glad to know that they have bulk pricing as well. They also have a great Facebook page with wonderful ideas and info. This is what everyone is getting for Christmas gifts for sure!
Truly one of this year's "Best Finds" for me! Thank you, thank you!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2015This actually works! I just opened my first batch of pickled cauliflower yesterday. My only complaint is that this set seems very overpriced for the few items you get in the package. At the same time, this has been a lot of fun, and I look forward to pickling many more batches of vegetables. The device is very easy to use. FYI - this only works on WIDE-mouth canning jars. I made the mistake of assuming it would work on the regular Ball jars I had lying around at home. Instead, I had to go out and specifically purchase the wide-mouth version.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2014I bought this out of curiosity almost two years ago and have become a diehard fan of lactofermented foods ever since. Sure, I could have made it cheaper myself. But it wouldn't be any cheaper after adding in the costs and time of aquiring the parts and tools to do it and the waste of error product. At least not for just one. I don't need a dozen.
My first attempts at lactofermentation were with the old-school method of just loosening the Ball jar lid with no airlock each morning. I had about 50% failures and wanted an airlocked system - this one fit the bill at a decent price. Since I've had it I've made about 100 batches of different sorts and only had one failure (a batch of Kimchi) that was my fault for introducing a contaminant. For simple things like pickled cuke and peppers, I have 100% success. My mixed pickled pepper and onion relish has become a major hit at gatherings. It's nothing but random sliced and seeded peppers and onion fermented for a week then chopped and jarred. There are fresh pickled things in my fridge all the time tat are much healthier and better tasting than anything they sell at the store.
I've gone on to using a large stoneware crock for my 'kraut making but for small-batch pickled jallepeno, pickled garlic (you HAVE to try it), and standard pickled cucumber; this is still my go-to system. It fits everything from the Ball/Kerr pint to the 64oz half-gallon perfectly.
A couple "secrets" to no failures: be very-very clean! measure your salt by weight! maintain optimum temperatures! Tossing in a tablespoon of "culture" (just the brine of an older batch) from a previous batch enhances the flavors A LOT! Tap water has chlorine in it and will kill your good bacteria - let the water sit out, filter it, or use bottled nonchlorinated.
If you're mechanical and like DIY projects then by all means consider making your own. It's a pretty simple device. You don't even need to buy a gasket if you use Tattler plastic lids instead of Ball/Kerr. You can also pick an easier to use airlock for your DIY. But, if you're like me and aren't really a fix-it sort of person, this works marvelously right out of the box and the cost is far less than I charge for 1 hour of my labor.

Anne MustoeReviewed in Canada on July 20, 20155.0 out of 5 stars Simple, healthy and delicious!
Love, love, love this system. No elaborate canning process. The equipment is simple and straightforward to use with clear instructions in the accompanying book and video. They also have recipes in the book for a wide variety of pickles and relishes. I made Kimchi, which is delicious and am waiting for a batch of French-style pickled asparagus to finish fermenting. Then I think I'll do some sauerkraut. Looking forward to the health benefits of eating prebiotic fermented foods as well as the delicious taste.

Super easy to follow, DVD is a great addition to explain everything clearly and make your first batch less intimidating. Definitely recommend for the first-time fermenter to get started without worry. Our first batch was not only edible but delicious! Great product.
