We seem to be in a golden age for classical ballet. Most every new production is just amazing. This is no exception. This production has been brought to the stage by the great Russian choreographer, Alexei Ratmansky. So, what makes this DonQ noteworthy? First of all, the principal roles are danced by Anna Tsygankova(principal dancer with Het Nationale Ballet, trained in Novosibirsk, Russia and Monte Carlo, formerly with the Bolshoi Ballet, Hungarian National Ballet, and The Vienna State Opera Ballet) and Matthew Golding(trained in Canada, UK and the USA, and formerly with the ABT, currently principal dancer with Het Nationale Ballet), and they are absolutely marvelous! They dance with technical perfection, but more importantly, since technical perfection is becoming the norm, they display their own distinctive stamp of artistry. The choreography for the principal parts is robust, but is pretty much within traditional choreography. Another robust aspect of this production is the sheer volume of dancing. There is a lot of dancing by a lot of dancers. In fact, to supply music for all the choreography, additional music was borrowed from composers other than Minkus, such as Pugni and Drigo(a fact seldom mentioned is that ballet composers from this period often "borrowed" music from other composers without attribution; much of the music in DonQ attributed to Minkus is actually from Dvorak, especially the PDD in the last act). But the most distinctive and innovative feature of this DonQ is the casting of Don Quixote, himself, and Sancho Panza, portrayed by two popular Dutch comedic actors(actually, a comedy team), Peter de Jong and Karel Rooij. Their parts have been elevated far beyond what we normally see in this ballet. They almost steal the show!Read more ›

I loved this production of Don Quichot! The dancing was wonderful, and the production is quite nice. I was hesitant to buy it due to the other reviewers' complaints about the blurring, but I did not experience that when watching on my computer. Maybe the newer versions have been fixed or it plays better on a mac or something. I don't know, but I did not experience the blurring and loved the performance. I plan to watch it many times in the future.

I like this performance. It is a pity that the blurring makes very hard to view the whole company. With the present
equipment this is unforgivable. As an longtime backstage worker for regional companies I am used to watch everything on stage.
To nitpick a little bit, I don't like some of the extra scenes in particular the nightmare ! It does nothing for the story and I think it is boring. Also it is a waste of elaborate costumes. They were not for dancing. Also i don't like the final dance? of Don Q.

Again a good Don Q but my favorite Don Q is from the Mariinsky ballet aka Kirov (out on decca).

Incredibly well done. Perfectly adapted for TV. The Don Quichot music is easy to love, it's very energetic and optimistic. (I sometimes use it to carry me through the uninspiring household chores.) The choreography is sparkly and beautiful, and full of character. The dream scene is pure magic. You really do not have to have ballet expertise to enjoy the dances. Now, I've seen many different productions of Don Quichot so I knew all this about the music and the choreography. What really stood out is the quality of the dancers, and especially of the male principal dancer. I can usually spot multiple instances of "fudging", little errors that the audience usually cannot recognize, but Matthew Golding was perfect here, both technically and artistically. The acting on part of all of the dancers was superb.

I have seen this multiple times by now and I am so happy that Amazon makes it available for free to Prime subscribers.

Those worried about the problems with the Bluray can also try one of the available downloads if available in their territory: Don Quichot It's the same film, but without the frame rate conversion issues that impacted the Bluray.

I already own both the Nureyev (Australian Ballet) and Baryshnikov (ABT) versions of Don Quixote and I love them both, although the ABT one is my favourite - Baryshnikov has a lighter, more humorous touch than Nureyev and doesn't take himself quite so seriously. Matthew Golding's style reminds of Baryshnikov's. Both principals are beautiful dancers and they have a great chemistry together. The pas de deux are highlights of the show.
I liked the two Dutch character actors as the Don and Sancho Panza - it brought a fresh perspective to the ballet to have actors rather than dancers in the roles.
I can recommend this as an addition to any ballet lover's collection.

Your standard Don Quixote ballet---capably danced but with lackluster sets and costumes. Kitri and Basil meet with a commedia dell'arte troupe instead of the usual Gypsies, but otherwise similar to other productions. Much mime for Don Q, who also dances a bit more.

The best version of this ballet I have ever seen either on stage or on film. I found nothing to critizise about it.
